Easy Content Building For The Lazy Webmaster

Easy Content Building For The Lazy Webmaster

by: JP Lafferty

Free content builder.

Articles are the best way to add free content to your site. Thereกs hundreds if not thousands of article sites out there on the web that can be searched for free information.

The only problem I have with free articles is that you have to add the writers resource box to your site. Now this in itself is not a major problem. You could read several articles and then make your own in your own words.

This works well and is a quick and easy content building strategy that I would recommend to anybody. Also if you write your own content this way you should definitely consider posting a few of your own articles to the free article submission sites. This generates oneway links to your own site and over time can really build traffic to your site.

Just google กfree article submissionก or กarticlesก or anything of that nature to start building a list of article sites. The more you have the better.

Building content with ebooks

Free ebooks are a great source of free content and there is no shortage of them out there. Most free ebook sites have ebooks that were at one point being sold across the web. These are generally an excellent quality source of information.

To really benefit from ebooks you must first read them and take note of the main topics discussed. One way I find that works well is to write up a short report after reading the ebook and then building on that as I go through the ebook a second time. When I find something interesting I add it to the report in my own words. This is great for developing a better understanding of the material.

Of course after all this you may want to write a few articles about what you just read. As always you should share these articles with the rest of the web by submitting them to article sites.

This isn’t as tedious and time consuming as you might think. After your first or second go you will find yourself becoming more confident and this may well lead to you taking a more creative approach to your writing. In time you will be very efficient at writing your own reports and using them to create more articles and content for your websites.

I would advise you save every ounce of work you do. The more you write the more content and personal resources you have to pull from this makes it quicker and easier to create your own material. After a while you may realize you could put all your work into a ebook of your own and sell it:)

What should I write?

In short anything you want. Every human on this planet is a powerhouse of information. Even if your young you still have alot of experience to pull from.

Some people find that coming up with ideas of what to write about is quit easy but actualy writing it is the hard part. Others find the writing the easy part and the brainstorming the hard part.

If you fall into either camp then there is still hope for you, due to the fact that most humans will fall into either camp! Your not any different from me or anybody else out there. The best way to over come either problem is to get comfortable and just start writing. It is not hard!!

Pick something and start writing about it. What did you learn after a tragic event in your life is a great way to get your brain setup in the right direction. Pulling from personal experience realy helps to get you thinking and once that starts you will find it hard to turn your mind off.

Keeping it fresh.

The only way to keep information fresh is to write it in your own words. Add your persona to your material. Play with it before you publish it. Try to write as if you were explaining something to a friend. It comes across more respectful and easier to understand.

Also no matter what your writing about make sure you explain everything down to the letter. You may understand what your talking about but your reader wont always be as interested as you might think.

Always remember no matter where it is you can generaly go back and change it later. For instance if you have published a 5 page report to the web and your not happy with certain aspects of it well then you can take it down later and add in or delete whatever you want.

Is Something Missing From Your Keywords Research?

Is Something Missing From Your Keywords Research? (Part 2)

by: Serge Botans

In my previous article, I raised the issue that proper keyword research must take into account countries. The reason for that was that the demand for keywords can vary between countries. I gave examples of that fact using the Overture keyword tool.

To support my argument (that we need to be aware of countries when doing keyword research), I gave 2 reasons:

1. it will help us determine which countr(y/ies) to target, and

2. it will help us know what countr(y/ies) our visitors are most likely to come from.

I would like, in this article, to expand on these 2 reasons. I would also like to add further reasons why any keyword research must be country based.

1. When doing keyword research, we need to understand the limitations of our research. This is necessary in order to remove any assumptions we make about our findings. For example, if you find that the demand for a keyword is very high in the US, you cannot assume that the demand for that same keyword will also be vey high in other countries. You will only know for sure how much demand there is worldwide by doing country specific keyword research. Such research can be done using a tool such as the Overture keyword tool,

2. It will tell you where your visitors are most likely to come from. This in turn will tell you what features you need to add to your web site. For example, if you are targeting a keyword that is in demand in the US only, then obviously most of your visitors will come from the US. This then means that you need to design your web site primarily for US visitors. You will hence need to:

use US spelling such as กcolorก and not กcolourก,

if you sell products, then list your prices in US$,

if you live in the US, then add a fax number so your visitors can place orders by fax,

if you live in the US, you could organise a US free call number for your visitors to ring you should they need to,

if you live in the US and you ship your orders, then you could include shipping costs. You could also include how long it will take for them to receive their order,

if you don’t live in the US, then you will need to make it possible for your visitors to pay you in US$,

if you don’t live in the US and you ship your orders, then you could include shipping costs. And you could include how long it will take for them to receive their order,

and so on . . .

If on the other hand, you are wanting to target several nonEnglish speaking countries, then:

you may need to add a translation service to your site so that your visitors can read your site in their language,

you may need to add a currency exchange service so that your visitors can convert your prices into their currency,

you may need to make it possible for your visitors to pay you in their own currency,

you may need to add other ways for your visitors to pay you apart from credit cards. You could offer international cheques/checks, money orders, direct bank transfers, . . . I once had a customer who wanted to pay me in Euros from Italy and needed my address to do so. The easier you make it for people to place an order, the greater the chances someone will place an order!

if you ship your orders, then you could add the shipping costs to each of the countries you are targeting. And include how long it will take for them to receive their order,

and so on . . . May be you can think of other things you will need to add to your site to accommodate your international visitors.

3. It will help you target the right keywords for the country you want to target. For example, if you want to target Canada, then you will need to use keywords that are in high demand in Canada only. There is absolutely no point doing keyword research in the UK if you are wanting to target Canada as the keyword demand between the 2 countries may vary greatly.

4. It will help you develop a keyword strategy so that you can target several countries at the same time. This can be achieved in several ways depending on the keywordsก demand and supply.

you could use keywords that are in common demand in the several countries. For example, if you sell กwidgetsก with your site and you find that there is a healthy demand for กblack widgetsก in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. Then you could target that keyword with your site as that keyword will help you target 4 countries in one go,

you could use keywords in demand in each country, as long as they complement each other and are highly relevant for your site. For example, using the widget idea, if you found that กcolored widgetsก are in demand in the US, กwhite widgetsก are in demand in the UK, กblack widgetsก in Canada, and กcoloured widgetsก in Australia. Then, you would just target all these keywords with your site which would not be hard to do as all these keywords can easily be targeted together.

Given the right circumstances, you could even use both strategies at the same time.

As I mentioned in my first article, the Overture keyword tool enables you to research the demand for keywords in some 19 countries around the world. To see the countries that Overture supports, go to www.overture.com and have a look at the top right corner of the page. By clicking on any one of the countries listed, you will have access to the Overture keyword tool for the country you selected, and this will enable you to research the keyword demand in that country.

As you may know, keyword demand is only one half of the equation. Keyword demand needs to be looked at together with its supply numbers. One of the ways of determining keyword supply is to use Google. This means that to you need to know how to use Google to research the supply of keywords in your country of interest. This is a bit harder to explain and beyond the scope of this article.

I hope that this second article has convinced you about the need to be country aware when doing your keyword research. The success of your web site may depend on it.

Create A Flash Presentation For Free With Open Off

Create A Flash Presentation For Free With Open Office

by: Steve Howson

The intentions of this short tutorial are not to teach you how to use Open Office, but rather to show you a quick and dirty way to create presentations and tutorials that can be exported as a Macromedai Flash file.
What is Open Office? It is a free, open source, cross platform office suite that has a lot of the same features as popular commercial suites.
Being that itกs cross platform means it can be compiled for just about anything, Windows, Linux / Unix, Mac, etc..
Using Open Office Presentation
Basically, if youกve ever used Microsoft Powerpoint, youกve pretty much used Presentation. Itกs a slide show (or presentation) creator that lets you create any style slide show you want.
You can have text, graphics, charts, etc… or any combination
It does not take much to figure out Presentation. You can add text or picture boxes, add designs, add tables and pretty much anything you can think of.
After you have created the presentation, hereกs where you convert it to Flash:
You simply go in to the กfileก menu and select กExportก.
A กsave asก dialog box will come up where you can choose the file name, location and the format you want.
From the pull down box you will see the กMacromedia Flash (SWF)ก option, thatกs the one you want.
Select the format, pick your location, name the file and press the Save button.
Thatกs it.. you now have a Macromedia Flash version of your presentation that you can include on your website.
Why whould you want this?
Macromedia Flash is pretty much a standard for multimedia on the web, as a result there is a plugin for almost every browser and most people already have this plugin.
This gives you the chance to put Flash content on your site without having to play for the Macromedia Suite.

Profitable Content

Profitable Content

by: Syd Johnson

You can create profitable content in 2 hours or less

Everyone knows that the best way to get a high ranking on the search engines is to create a lot of keyword rich content. You can write the articles on your ownin fact, if you write one article per day, you will have over 300 articles by the end of the year.

That’s enough to get your high google page rank because of the sheer volume of pages, and because it is original and not recycled content. The search engines are attracted by the fresh content, and will send over more unique traffic to your website.

More unique visitors will translate in more online sales.

So what are some quick techniques for generating content?

1. Publish your blog to your website.

If you are a regular blogger, use your ftp program to publish the content directly to a page on your site. It’s a really quick way to add pages of extra content for your next search engine update. In addition to your own postings, there are comments from site visitors which help to boost the average page content to anywhere from a few hundred, to a few thousand new words added per day. As long as you have adequate incoming links, the search engines will find you, reindex the site and update accordingly.

2. Questions and Answers

As you get questions via email, create updated answers and put them on a few Q & A pages. You can also expand the questions and the answers to full length articles that you can post on your site, or post one of online article directories. One article on the right directory can give you hundreds and possibly thousands of new incoming links.

3. Edit Old copy

Take out some of your older articles. If there are any topics that you rushed through, now is the time to expand it. For example, if you created an article with 10 ways to do something, expand each suggestion into its own full length article. You already have knowledge of the topic and so you can easily create 10 new pages for your website.

4. Buy packages with resale rights

But, don’t just turn around and resell the items. Instead, read through the content, and add your own special touch. Rewrite the table of contents, create a new overview, expand on a certain area and add extra pages, add new links and resources, software tools and more. This will make your package dramatically different from all others that bought the package and simply expected to make a sale with no effort.

If you buy a package with resale rights to post it online, use your basic design skills to reformat the content and change a 100% recycled product into a 50% unique product. It gives you a marketing edge and also creates excellent copy for the search engines.

5. Repackage old content into ebooks

Take all of your old ezines and articles from the past two years. Update the information, add new links and turn it into and ebook. Then offer the ebook for sale on your site or on a service like Clickbank. Ebooks are very popular, require no warehousing and are incredibly profitable. You can do the copywriting, design and actual ebook creation all on your own for under $100. Give it a try and you’ll be surprised at the results.

6. Hire a ghost writer

Go to some of the freelance boards and put your projects up for bid. I have heard of articles being sold for as little as $20 for a complete, professionally written article by a freelancer. This is probably the fastest way to create original, profitable content for anyone who is not a writer and doesn’t trust their own writing skills.

These are just a few tips to get you started.

Using QuickSub To Make It Easier For Your Visitors

Using QuickSub To Make It Easier For Your Visitors To Subscribe To Your Feed

by: Allan Burns

You can make it easier for your visitors to subscribe to your RSS feed. With a free and easy to install javascript function you can add the QuickSub feed button to your webpage in just a few minutes. Let me show you just how easy it is.

QuickSub is a javascript mouseover function that produces a list of RSS feed readers that you can use to subscribe to your RSS news feed with one click. You can see it in action on my RSS resource site, just move the mouse over the subscribe link. You should see a list of RSS feed readers. If you click on one of the news reader links it will open up that RSS reader and add this feed to it. You will need the particular news reader installed on your computer for this to work. So for example if your visitor uses SharpReader as their RSS reader then they would click on the Sharpreader link and this would add your feed to your visitors RSS reader.

To use QuickSub on your site you will first need to download the javascript and CSS files from QuickSubs site. The file is compressed so you will need to unzip the file which will leave you with quicksub.css and quicksub.js as well as a sample html file.

Upload the CSS as javascript file to your server. Now you will need to add some code into your web pages. You will need to do this for all of the pages that you wish to use QuickSub on.

Please note that in these examples I have used square brackets instead of angled brackets.

First you need to copy some code to call the CSS file. Add this line with your head tags.

[style type=’text/cssก] @import กquicksub.cssก; [/style]

Then copy this code into the body of your page.

[div id=กquickSubก style=กposition:absolute; visibility:hidden; zindex:1000;ก onMouseOut=’return timeqs();ก onMouseMove=’return delayqs();ก][/div]

[script language=กJavaScriptก src=กquicksub.jsก][! quickSub (c) Jason Brome ][/script]

Then where you want to use QuickSub place this code in the body of your page.

[a href=กhttp://www.sitename.com/rssfeed.xmlก onmouseout=’return timeqs();ก onmouseover=’return quicksub(this, กhttp://www.sitename.com/rssfeed.xmlก);ก]Your link text here[/a]

You just need to replace the path with the path to you RSS feed and enter you own link text. All is left now is to upload your modified page to your web server and the new QuickSub javascript will be active.

Blog Revenue Ideas

Blog Revenue Ideas

by: Jonni Good

Are you lookin for ways to add revenue to your blog, instead of (or in addition to) AdSense ads from Google? Here are two suggestions.

The first service is called BlogAds ( http://www.blogads.com/publisher_html ) They offer 20% of the ad fee to the blogger. Even better, it looks like they love blogs, and are willing to help make their partners successful.

The second service is called rssads ( http://www.rssads.com/ ). This service isn’t up and running yet, but they have their sales site up. They will be selling ads that appear in the body of a partnerกs RSS feed (your blog posts). The entire post will appear in your subscriberกs news reader program, instead of a short paragraph. This would make sure that the ads get in front of your readers, but Iกm wondering if the reader will be as excited about it as they are. It will be interesting to see if this one flies.

Another option that website owners use (and it would work for bloggers as well), is selling text ads. In this system, you don’t have a script on your page that serves ads from Google or wherever. Instead, the ad buyer comes to you and offers to buy space for a text link. You can set this up yourself, with a subscription payment handled by PayPal.com.

Keep Them Coming Back Update Your Site

Keep Them Coming Back Update Your Site

by: Richard Lowe, Jr.

If you are anything like me, your website is a reflection of yourself. It contains your thoughts and communications, exposed to the entire world at all times. Look at virtually any noncommercial web site and you will get a glimpse at the person behind the monitor.
I look at web sites all day long, and I am constantly amazed by the things that people reveal about themselves without saying anything. Is the website well organized or just a jumble of images and text thrown up at a moments notice? Is the site alive with color or just dull and lifeless black and white? Is the site exploding at the seams with content or is it just a collection of ads, banners or links?
All of these and many other clues tell me more about the webmaster than any of those 50 question psychological quizzes.
One clue that tells me more than anything else is whether or not the site is kept uptodate. Sometimes I will see a beautiful web page a work of art that comes from the heart and soul of a human being. I fall in love with the page and want to learn more, then click on a link and bam, page not found. I shrug, as every webmaster has a bad link now and then. Click on another, and another, and more than half of the links are dead. I sigh, then move on.
Or Iกm reading wonderful stories about a personกs life experiences and find, well, these are all years out of date. A little looking around the site and I find that nothing has been updated since 1997. I always feel a little sad when I see this itกs as if something inside the webmaster died. I wonder, did she grow tired of it all? Get married and lose interest? Perhaps even died? Who knows, there is no clue on the site at all. Itกs just … abandoned.
Another clue to a neglected site the person created a webring and got several hundred people to join. The ring is obviously a creation of love as itกs not easy to get so many sites to join up. The ring graphics are wonderful, the join page is beautifully written, and I am actually very impressed. I start to surf the ring and quickly find that over half the sites no longer exist. Another dozen have removed the ring code. How sad. Itกs one thing to lose interest in a webring … but to just abandon it? I wonder what changed in a personกs life caused this work of love and community to just be discarded so easily.
Or it could be that a person and simply doesn’t update their site very often. There is a wonderful comic book site which is simply beautiful, yet sometimes months go by without a single update! Itกs so frustrating as I really am intrigued and want to come back to visit this guyกs private world. I haven’t checked in a long time why bother, since the site is updated so infrequently?
My feeling is simple. Create the best website that you can with the knowledge that you have. You will never be finished, as there will always be more to say and show. You are a living, breathing human and you are learning more every day. Thus, there should always be something of value that you can add to your web site.Presumably, youกve created your web site to communicate something to the rest of the world. It could be that you want to write up your life story, explain about the mythology of the Greeks and Romans, or simply compile a list of the best blonde jokes. Itกs possible that you even want to make a few dollars now and then by selling a nice product. Why settle for just getting someone to read what youกve got to say and move on? Why not continually update your message so that your readers come back time after time to find out what new and wonderful things youกve posted this week.
Think youกve said everything that can be said about your subject? There are many options to this method of continual updates. You could add a message board to start virtual conversations with your visitors. Or perhaps you could add a weekly column (and associated ezine) to get people to come back. Even if youกve said everything there is to say, perhaps you can add pictures, sound and videos or change the layout or presentation.
Be sure and let people know whatกs new by including a "Whatกs New" section right on your front page. This serves to your visitors right to the new content immediately. It also lets them know that you are updating the site all of the time, which means they will want to come back again and again just to see what you have written or changed.
A periodic ezine is another way to stay in contact with your readers, letting them know whatกs going on at your special website. Another great way to get people to come back is to become active in newsgroups or email discussion lists (such as egroups and topica). By posting useful information at these places you will get people wanting to come to your site to find out what else youกve got to say.
Which, of course, leads back to the original premise of this article. If you want people to come back to your site, you had better be keeping it uptodate, accurate and adding new content all of the time. Otherwise, your readers will grow tired and move on to greener pastures.
And thatกs the saddest thing of all … an abandoned creation of love and passion.

How to Make a Website: Minus the Headaches

How to Make a Website: Minus the Headaches

by: Tom Antion

There is nothing wrong with making your own website if you are looking to save some money. Be prepared however, for your finished product to resemble an after school project; cutesy, homemade touches and all. It is pretty hard to make your own website and have it look professional; but, there is an easier way that will leave you with fewer headaches in the long run.

You must first do some web research. Click around and find websites that have the look you are going for. Make some notes and jot down what it is you do and do not want representing you. You should also start thinking of some keywords that will help people find you if they were to type them into a search engine.

After you have a rough idea of what you would like your site to look like, you should contact a professional who will take care of all the hassles that come with making a webpage. I recommend contacting Global Presence in Tucson, Arizona, http://www.saeler.com; they do great work and pay special attention to detail.

Your website will be created so that you can make changes when and if you see fit. To do this, you should purchase a web authoring program, and learn how to properly navigate the system to make revisions on your site. After the site is up, you only need to know how to do 4 things in order to keep your site up to date.

1. Be able to add a new page, complete with all of the navigation buttons from previous pages.

2. Have the ability to add text.

3. Be able to add a graphic.

4. Know how to make a hyperlink.

These are 4 easy steps that will be repeated numerous times throughout your website’s existence.

Not everyone uses the same browser, so your webpage may look very different from one computer to the next. To get a quick look at how your site may appear on other browsers, go to http://www.anybrowser.com/. When choosing a font, use something standard like Times New Roman; one that virtually every computer has. A good resource to help guide you through all of your website problems is Robin Williams’ (no, not that Robin Williams) book, The Non Designers Web Book.

*Remember to keep your site simple, so that customers don’t get confused by all the buttons, and click away.

When Is It Time To Move From A Reseller Account To

When Is It Time To Move From A Reseller Account To Your Owned Dedicated Server?

by: Christoph Puetz

Many hosting resellers just think that as soon as they have additional $99.00 (example) of income a month that they should go and get their own dedicated server. But is this the right step at the right time? I am not sure if just the income justifies the purchase of your own dedicated server (or to lease one). A dedicated server comes with much more responsibility for the reseller. Unless a reseller gets a fully managed dedicated server much more work and risk is waiting for him. Can you afford to have your server hacked and do you know what to do?

You should get a dedicated server at least a month or two in advance before moving your own site or even customer sites to it. Maybe even wait a little longer if you do not feel comfortable with the added responsibility. Get the server early enough and play with it. Make sure you understand your new tasks and that you are able to handle them properly. The damage to your business done by a hacked server might break your business into pieces. Hire an administrator and have the server made secure. Don’t leave the server unsecured on the Internet for more than a few hours. Even hours can be too long and the server gets attacked.

Having your own server(s) also means to have additional work. All the work your reseller host has done in the background now needs to be done by you. Talk to your reseller host and ask what they do invisible working in the background. Do you have the time and the resources available to do all this yourself? You might have to hire someone to have some helping hands. Hiring help will mean a smaller piece of the pie for you (less income). Are you ready for it?

Oh, you’re a Server Admin yourself? Congrats. This will save you some money. But who is doing sales and support while you work on the server? Just keep in mind a server means more work and requires much more attention. Checking log files, talking to the data center when things go wrong, fixing damage done by a SPAMMER on your server yourself.

Are you only ready for your own server when you have $99.00 of additional income a month? Your business plan should reflect when to look for your own server and you should have a detailed plan ready to get you going. Make a list of the additional tasks and the risks and prepare yourself and acquire resources. Learn to administer a server well in advance before getting one. Even if you hire a technician or an administrator knowing how the server OS works is crucial to your success.

Ten Ways To Make Your Affiliate Site More Profitab

Ten Ways To Make Your Affiliate Site More Profitable

by: Jude Wright

Is your affiliate website ready for business? You may have your content written and your affiliate products in place, but there are more things you can do to make your site more profitable.

1. Have a specific theme for your site and make sure your content, logo and other graphics are relevant to that theme. Don’t add kitty graphics to a website about gaming.

2. Have as much original content content that you have written yourself on your site as you can. Your visitors don’t want to read the same articles on a website that they have just seen on the one they were just at.

3. Create กprinter friendlyก pages for your important content. People are looking for information. Let them print it out. When they go back to read it later, theyกll see your siteกs url at the bottom of the page.

4. Put your web pages into a logical order. Think like your visitors and group like content pages together. Make your site as กuser friendlyก as possible.

5. All links should be กclickable.ก Check and recheck the links to other pages and to your affiliate products.

6. Create a Frequently Asked Questions page especially if you sell your own products. When someone asks a question, publish that question, with your answer, in your FAQs.

7. Have contact information available on each of your web pages. Create a link to a Contact Me form instead of using an email addres. This will cut down on the amount of spam that you receive.

8. Offer Freebies. Free reports, ebooks, autoresponder courses and newsletters give your visitors a reason to come back. Set up an autoresponder for each freebie to help build your subscriber list.

9. Continue to add more valuable content to your site. One way to do this is to add an article directory to your site. Allowing your website visitors to add their articles will create good content for other visitors and it will help get their article noticed. Itกs a winwin situation for all.

10. Add links to other sites. Make sure those links are to websitesก themes are compatible to yours. This will ad interest as well as increasing your search engine ranking.

CSS – Site Design Basics Part One

CSS – Site Design Basics Part One

by: Michael J Medeiros

When it comes to designing a Website, there are several modern programming techniques that can make the designer’s task much easier. Once the content and focus of the Website is decided, layout should become the focus of development. What fonts will be used for the various links and text? Which color will be used to make certain links more prominent than others? Most importantly, how will the designer ensure the entire Website has an isometric appearance? If used properly, CSS can accomplish those tasks, while reducing bandwidth and

increasing pageload timeframes.

WHAT IS CSS AND HOW CAN IT BE USED?

CSS is an abbreviation for Cascading Style Sheet. It can consist of several lines of text to control content appearance within a Webpage, or multiple pages within a Website. There are two common ways that a Style Sheet can be used. First, it can be added to the, ขhead,ข of each individual Webpage. A more efficient way to implement a Style Sheet, is to upload the file into a Directory on a Website, and utilize an include tag.

Posting the style sheet within the head of each page will increase the amount of bandwidth used and slightly affect the download speed of pages. This is dependent on the size of a particular site and the number of styles included on the CSS. If a changeofstyle is decided upon in the future, each individual Webpage will require editing, to affect the entire Website. For example, if a designer wished to apply a holiday theme around Christmas, he or she would need to edit the CSS on every page for the change to take affect.

In contrast, a CSS file can be uploaded onto a Host. Once uploaded, a designer can use a simple include tag, to call upon the style sheet. This methodofuse can reduce the amount of bandwidth used and increase speed times, as some visitors will have the CSS stored on their computers following the first page load. Additionally, it will make style changes much easier as only one file needs to be changes to affect all relevant pages within a given Website.

DEVELOPING A STYLE SHEET

Open any text editor with a blank page. Save the page as, something.cssข. If it was decided to upload the file for use, this will be the actual file uploaded. Additionally, a designer can copy and paste from this file, if it is to be included within the head of each Webpage.

Before beginning to add actual tags, consider how links should apppear and the various sections of the Website or Webpages. If a Style Sheet becomes sloppy, it will make the designer’s job difficult. Therefore, start simple and keep the CSS clean. The Style Sheet should begin with simple grouping. For example, all pages may be utilizing an identical header and left menu. If the text styles are going to be different, this could be are first two simple groups, along with link formats.

MANAGING HYPERLINKS WITH CSS

With our first two groups we can add five lines to the style sheet. These are (alphabetized) A:LINK, A:HOVER, A:VISITED, .head, and .leftmenu. With these five lines, we can control the appearance of links, visited links, mouseovers on links, the header of all pages, and the left menu.

Now we are going to add some basic variations to the text. After, A:LINK and A:VISITED,ข add a space then, ข{color: #004080}ข. Notice that no font attributes have been added. This is because we are going to utilize different fonts within the other tags. The only thing being changed on linked text is the color. Change the color to reflect the desired appearance. Note, this can be adjusted to personal preference.

ADDING THE HEADER AND MENU TEXT TO THE STYLE SHEET

Once the desired link colors are decided, the font attributes can be associated to the header and left menu. After the .head and .leftmenu, add a space then, ข{fontfamily: Arial, Helvetica, sansserif; fontsize: 11pt; fontweight: normal; texttransform: capitalize;}ข. To explain, we are specifying any area of text with the .head style will use one font (fontfamily), be a uniform size (fontsize), have a uniform weight (fontweight), and regardless of typing be transformed to capitals (texttransform). A modified version should be added to the left menu.

Here is how the CSS should currently appear:

A:link {color: #004080}

A:visited {color: #004080}

A:hover{color:ff3300}

.head ข{fontfamily: Arial, Helvetica, sansserif; fontsize: 11pt;

fontweight: normal; texttransform: capitalize;}

.leftmenu ข{fontfamily: Arial, Helvetica, sansserif; fontsize: 11pt; fontweight: normal; texttransform: capitalize;}

IMPLEMENTING THE STYLE SHEET

If it was decided to past the style sheet onto each page, add:

<STYLE TYPE="text/css"><!—

A:link {color: #004080}

A:visited {color: #004080}

A:hover{color:ff3300}

.head {fontfamily: Arial, Helvetica, sansserif; fontsize: 11pt;

fontweight: normal; texttransform: capitalize;}

.leftmenu {fontfamily: Arial, Helvetica, sansserif; fontsize: 11pt;

fontweight: normal; texttransform: capitalize;}

></STYLE>

to each page of the site that will utilize the Style Sheet. The style sheet should be placed between the <head> and </head> tags of the document.

If it was decided to upload the sheet and call upon the file on each page, add, ข<LINK href="http://links.mjmls.com/ name of the file" type=text/css rel=stylesheet>ข. Once again, this should be placed between the <head> and </head> tags. Change the link location to where the style sheet is located on the Web Host.

CALLING THE STYLE SHEET ON WEBPAGES

There are a variety of ways to call upon the different text attributes. This depends widely on site layout. If the site is designed using tables, we can simply specify the style for each cell, rather than each word. For example, the table code could appear as:

<table width=ข100%ข>

<tr>

<td CLASS=ขHEADข><a href=ขhttp://links.mjmls.comข>Home</a></td>

<td CLASS=ขHEADข>Next link</td> etc…

</tr>

</table>

As a standalone link, within the given Webpage, we can add the class tag to the Hyperlink:

<a href=ขhttp://links.mjmls.comข class=ขheadข>Home</a>

To modify an entire group of standalone text, the CSS tag could be added to the paragraph tag:

<p class=ขheadข>The entire paragraph of text is affected</p>

It could be suggested that calling the style tags are experimented with, prior to modifying an entire Website. By adding class=ขheadข or class=ขleftmenuข to various tags, a new designer will learn how the style tags can work, reduce the size of a Webpage, save bandwidth, and provide a uniform appearance throughout a Website.

In part two, we will demonstrate some other attributes that could be added to different tags and applying CSS to tables.
