FreeDOS

FreeDOS

by: Stephen Bucaro

Before September 1995, Microsoft Windows was an MSDOS program. DOS was an easy to use command line operating system that provided you with complete ability to control and troubleshoot your computer. Microsoftกs goal was to eliminate DOS, possibly to prevent you from having complete control of your own computer.
The last standalone version of MSDOS was version 6. Unfortunately, that version is not Y2K compliant. Windows 95 and later came with MSDOS version 7. Unfortunately, that version is too integrated with the operating system. It will not work without access to your hard disk.
FreeDOS is a PC compatible Y2K compliant DOS that you can download from www.freedos.org. FreeDOS fits on a single floppy disk and can be used to boot your computer. Download and unzip the file odin7bin.zip (756KB). Unziping will create the files diskcopy.exe and fdodin07.144. Put a blank formatted floppy disk in the drive. In the Start | Run dialog box, or at a command prompt type กdiskcopy fdodin07.144 a:ก to create a bootable FreeDOS floppy disk.
Why would you want to boot your computer with DOS? Maybe you want to use Windows XP without product activation.
First make sure that the BIOS boot sequence on your computer is configured with the floppy drive as the first boot device (or at least before the C: drive). To get to the BIOS configuration screen, press the กDeleteก or กF2ก key (depending upon your BIOS) while your computer is starting.
Insert the FreeDOS floppy disk in the floppy drive and start the computer. At the A:\>_ prompt type DATE. FreeDOS will return your computerกs current date, along with a prompt to enter a new date. Enter the date that you installed Windows XP (or at least a date before the 30 day expiration date). Remove the FreeDOS floppy disk and restart your computer.
Note: This will only work if Windows XP has never been started after the 30 day expiration date. The first time Windows XP is started after the 30 day expiration date will be the last time it starts.
Every time you start your computer, start it first with FreeDOS and reset the computerกs date to the date that you installed Windows XP. Windows XP will think time has come to a standstill.
Note: Of course, Your file creation and last modified dates will not be correct, so this is not really a way for a serious user to bypass Windows XP product activation. However for certain purposes, like learning the Windows XP operating system, this can be a way to use Windows XP without product activation.
Microsoft should have made the expiration period much longer than 30 days. Maybe they want you to activate Windows XP before it crashes.

How To Tweak Your Website For More Sales

How To Tweak Your Website For More Sales

by: Michael Southon

There are two pillars to a successful online business. One of them is traffic and the other is sales copy the text on your your website. Thatกs what this article is about getting more sales from your website.

(1) Format. The fastest selling websites have the following format: a onepage sales letter; a single column of text occupying half the screen width; and a maximum of 2 or 3 linked pages (eg. partners.html, testimonials.html, author.html etc.)

(2) Headline. This should be in font size 4 or 5 and offer a strong benefit. Writing a compelling headline is a delicate balancing act you need to grab your readers attention but you don’t want to strain their credulity. Here are some tips on writing effective headlines: http://tutorials.findtutorials.com/read/id/28

(3) Date. A date at the top of your page adds to the feeling that your sales page is a letter, which makes your page more readable. It also assures visitors that your site is uptodate and still relevant. Here is a javascript code that will insert the current date: http://www.ezinewriter.com/datescript.html

(4) Paragraphs. Keep them short no more than 1 or 2 sentences per paragraph. It makes your page much easier to read.

(5) Bolding and highlighting. If you emphasize certain keywords your sales page will be much more effective. It draws your readers attention to your benefits and it also breaks up the monotony of the text. To highlight text, use these tags: your text here

(6) Book covers. An attractive book cover will increase your sales by up to 300% so if you don’t have one, get one! Here are some websites that design book covers:

http://www.killercovers.com/

http://www.ebookwow.com/

http://www.ebookcoverart.com/

http://www.ebookcreators.com/

http://www.dynamitecovers.com/

(7) Testimonials. These will also dramatically increase your sales. If you don’t have any, ask your customers for them. Every testimonial will always contain a key phrase or benefit make that phrase leap out at the reader by using bold type. Always provide the website and/or email address of the person who wrote the testimonial. If you make the website URL and active link, youกll get more testimonials but youกll also lose traffic when your visitors click on those links.

(8) Bonus Gifts. Offering freebies with your product is an old trick in web marketing nearly everyone does it. My advice is take the freebies off. Why? Firstly, chances are the freebies you offer are also being offered by hundreds of other websites your visitors have seen them all before and are not impressed. Secondly, offering freebies sends the message that your product is not really worth it on its own.

(9) Unique Selling Proposition. You must differentiate your product from your competitorsก products. One way to do this is to have a กWarningก near the bottom of your page that says กDo not buy an eBook on XYZ unless it meets the following criteria…ก And then list the unique features of your eBook (or product).

(10) A Call to Action. This is the biggest cause of lost sales. Most people procrastinate so you must create a sense of urgency. You can do this in various ways a price rise after a certain date, a price rise after a certain number of copies have been sold, or a bonus report for the next 15 orders.

7 Secrets to Explode your eBook Sales! Part 2

7 Secrets to Explode your eBook Sales! Part 2

by: Bluedolphin Crow

Secret #2: Creating your Marketing Timeline for Success!
Aho!
You can increase your sales and free time by creating your own marketing timeline. Marketing timelines are essential for all Internet businesses. They provide not only organization but a truly well defined goal sheet as well.
To understand your timeline is to understand your business. Can you really know where you are going if you don’t have a goal? I think not! Can you really tell how well you are doing if you are not logging your results? I think not again! Can you really tell what your profit margin is at this moment and will be next month at this time without tracking your sales, goals and future plans?
Well I think you know my answer by now.
There is tons of internet marketing กHow Toก infiramtion online. However have you noticed very few people teach you how to organize your information? Well, now you will know.
My marketing timelines include: goals present and future, Action plans for today and tomorrow as well as next month, and last but definitely not least you have a sales tracker as well.
Ok. Now take out a sheet of paper, and for computer lovers, open up your word processing program.
Letกs begin with our goal sheet.
On top of the page in BIG letters type:

Goal Sheet Short Term
Now grab another piece of paper, or another page, and on the top of that one in BIG letters type:

Goals Long Term
Next page write in BIG letters:

Action Steps Short term
And another page in BIG letters:

Action Steps Long term
One last page in BIG letters write: SALES
Now you have the foundation you need to begin really understanding your ebusiness as it grows and matures.
Grab a file folder, or on the computer, make a file folder that says: กMarketing Timeline.ก This folder will hold all your files.
Page one: Short term Goals: Make 3 columns.

Column 1: Date

Column 2: Goal

Column 3: Date completed Goal
Page two: Goals Long Term: Make 3 columns.

Column 1: Date

Column 2: Goal

Column 3: Date Completed Goal.
Page 3: Action Plans short term: Make 3 columns.

Column 1: Date.

Column 2: Action Steps.

Column 3: Date Completed Action Steps.
Page 4: Action Plans Long term: Make 3 columns.

Column 1: Date.

Column 2: Action Steps.

Column 3: Date Completed Action Step.
Page 5: Sales tracking Make 3 columns:

Column 1: date

Column 2: Sales

Column 3: Continuing Total.
I can hear a lot of you out there groaning, ‘there must be a way to automate this!ก and yes there is! However, I want you to do it manually when you first start your ebusiness. I have found that this will not only show you how you are doing and where you are and what has to be done to get to where you want to go. It also helps to seat all the information in your unconscious brain. Walla! Automating the Brain!
Really, I am serious. By doing this manually you will learn a lot more in the beginning and not have to learn it as you go along. For those of you that can’t wait to automate, I have included links to a lot of automated services and software in my eBook: กeBook Marketing Secrets Revealed.ก
Have a great week!

PHP in the Command Line

PHP in the Command Line

by: Robert Plank

Thereกs a single line you can add to your web hostกs control panel that will automatically archive your content.

LISTEN CLOSELY AND YOUกLL HEAR THE OCEAN

Ever run commands in DOS? Youกve used a shell. A กshellก in the computer world is a place where you enter commands and run files by name rather than clicking around different windows.

Most web hosts let you operate a shell remotely. This means that you can type commands in window on your computer, that are actually run on your web host, thousands of miles away.

Iกd like you to log in to your shell now. If you can’t do it by going in to DOS and typing ‘telnet your.domain.hereก, your web host probably uses กSSHก a secure shell. Youกll have to ask your host how you can log in to the shell, they might tell you to download a program called กPuTTYก and give instructions how to use it.

If you can’t login to your shell, or aren’t allowed, youกll just have to sit back and watch what I do.

Now that you’re logged in, type: echo hi

On the next line will be printed hi

Try this: date +%Y

This prints the current year. Thatกs 2004 for me.

So what if we combined the two? Try: echo date +%Y

Well, that doesn’t work, because the computer thinks you’re trying to echo the TEXT กdate +%Yก instead of the actual COMMAND. What we have to do here is surround that text in what are called กback quotesก. Unix will evaluate everything enclosed in back quotes (by evaluate, I mean itกll treat that text as if it were entered as a command.)

Your back quotes key should be located on the upperleft corner of your keyboard, under the Esc button.

PIPE DOWN, OVER THERE…

Type this in: echo `date +%Y`

Gives us ก2004ก. You could even do something like this: echo `dir`

Which puts the directory listing all on one line.

But now, we put our newfound knowledge to good use. Unix has another neat feature called piping, which means ‘take everything you would normally output to the screen here, and shove it whatever file I tell you to.ก So say I had something like this:

echo กheyก > test.txt

Now type กdirก and youกll see a new file, test.txt, that wasn’t there before. View it off the web, or FTP it to your computer, do whatever you have to, to read the file. It should contain the word กheyก.

Likewise, dir > test.txt would store the directory listing into ‘test.txtก.

HERE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW

But say we wanted that text file to be named according to the current date. You already have the pieces to figure all that out, if you think about it. Type: date help to get a listing of all the possible ways to represent the date. The ones you want to represent the year, month and day are %Y, %m, and %d (capitalization *is* important here).

This is what you want: echo `date +%Y%m%d.html`

Running this today, January 8th, 2004, results in: 20040108.html

Iกve just echoed this year, followed by this month and this day, with an ก.htmlก at the end. This will be our output file.

Now, to pipe it: echo กheyก > `date +%Y%m%d.html`

If this sort of thing were to run every day, it would save กheyก to a file called 20040108.html today, and tomorrow to a file called 20040109.html, then 20040110.html, and so on.

The easy part now, is figuring out what you want archived. I use wget, which takes an option to store the output file, so we don’t need to use piping. Hereกs an example of how to use wget to save the page กhttp://www.google.comก to a file representing todayกs date:

wget http://www.google.com outputdocument=`date +%Y%m%d.html`

PUT IT TOGETHER

And now, to setup your crontab. I won’t explain how crontabs work, just that they’re the equivalent of the Windows Task Scheduler, which automatically run a particular command at a given date and time. The following will save http://www.google.com to a different filename every day.

0 0 * * * wget http://www.google.com outputdocument=`date +%Y%m%d.html` > /dev/null

Keep in mind that if you want to put it in a special directory, just put the path in, i.e. change whatกs in the กoutput documentก parameter to: `date +/home/user/wwwroot/your.host/%Y%m%d.html`

Iกve piped the output to /dev/null because wget saves the file for us, and thereกs no reason to do anything else with the output.

Tip: Pipe your cron jobs to /dev/null if you aren’t doing anything with the output, because some hosts email you the results and no one needs an extra piece of useless email every day.

Just change http://www.google.com to the page of your choice. However itกs important to know that the กarchiveก you’re taking will only be a snapshot of that page on a particular day.

What I mean by that is, if you’re archiving a blog page every day, this archiver won’t archive that page on a particular day, itกll just be archiving what was there at that time. So itกs not useful for everything, but itกs good if you have access to a page that changes constantly, once a day, whose results youกd like to store.

Add that line above into your crontab file. These days every host has a control panel so there should be a place in there to add cron jobs. If youกd like the archiver to run at a time other than midnight, or if it should run weekly, monthly, or whatever, try this tool Iกve made for you:

http://www.robertplank.com/cron

Iกve designed it the same way Task Scheduler is setup, you can enter a certain time, run only on weekdays, run only on certain days of the week. Anything you want.

This tip doesn’t take care of everything… for example, wget won’t save the images on a page unless they’re referenced by full URLs. In the next installment of this article series Iกll be showing you how you can use PHP to make up for some of the things wget can’t do (like grabbing images).

Hereกs my solution: http://www.jumpx.com/tutorials/commandline/get.zip

Itกs not the most perfect script in the world, but it should do what you want most of the time. If youกd like to delve into what it does, Iกve added comments within so you can see what it does. Iกve commented all the functions and a few of the important parts of the code.

ARGUMENTS (NOT THE SHOUTING KIND)

But wait, you want to use it in a crontab, which is run from the command line. You can’t just do something like:

php get.php?url=http://www.google.com

Because itกll try looking for a *file* named all that, complete with the question mark and all. So what if you have ten different URLs to grab off ten different crontabs, but you only want one script.

How would you do all that? Itกs a long brutal ordeal so prepare yourself. Ready?

php get.php url=http://www.google.com

Yeah, thatกs all there is to it. PHPกs pretty cool like that, it takes the arguments after the file name and stores them in the same array youกd check anyway.

One thing you might notice is that every time you run PHP from the command line, it gives you something like this:

Contenttype: text/html

XPoweredBy: PHP/4.3.3

your output here…

Those first couple of lines are the HTTP headers. But we’re not using HTTP (not loading it from a browser), so in the command line itกs better to call php with the กqก option, like this:

php q get.php url=http://www.google.com

The กqก stands for quiet, and will refrain from giving you the HTTP headers. If you’re just piping the script to /dev/null (to nothing) in a crontab, it doesn’t really make a difference but you should try to make this a habit when running PHP from the command line.

Thatกs enough for you to at least get started. If you still feel liking poking about with the things PHP can do in the command line, you can try prompting a user for keyboard input, like this:

Remember, that only works when PHP is run from the shell.

If you have PHP installed in Windows on a local machine of yours, you can also see what happens when you try to read (and write) to filehandles like กCOM1:ก and กLPT1:ก … yep, you guessed it, the serial port and printer port. If PHP isn’t installed on the computer you’re using now then don’t bother. But it is possible to use PHP to print and interact with your peripherals as well.

You’re welcome.

Courting Customers From First Date to Marriage

Courting Customers From First Date to Marriage

by: Bryan Brandenburg

Landing a new client is like courting a potential spouse. The first date is usually a make or break situation and if the door is still open, the work has just begun. Like dating, you’d better give your prospect a pretty good reason to meet with you again, because there is usually more than one suitor.

Getting the Next Date

The key to getting that next date or meeting with a prospect is to deliver enough value to make a subsequent gettogether attractive. At our company, our first meeting consists of a thorough questionnaire. Some of the questions we cover are:

What is the nature of the problem as you understand it?

What are the most urgent aspects of the problem?

What impact does this have on your organization?

Are you willing to make investments in technology when there is a clear ROI?

Who will be involved with making these decisions?

What other areas of your organization are you considering technology solutions?

What qualities do you look for in a vendor?

What will be the key factors driving your decision on this project?

We followup with a letter and summarize the client’s problems, the cost of the problems and the solutions we can bring to solve them. This gives the client a clearly articulated assessment of their situation based on the information they’ve disclosed to us. It’s often a more accurate and precise appraisal then before they met with us.

We try to complement their understanding of the problem with our understanding of the technology solutions. The prospect appreciates this new tool they have to move forward with solving the problems and we’ve gotten permission in almost every case to continue the conversation.

Making Your ขProposalข

The next step is a proposal, and we focus on educating the client throughout this process. We go beyond quoting a price; we send links to relevant articles, case studies and other content that expands the prospects understanding of their problems.

Many of these are included in the proposal as an appendix and we strive to deliver a document that is highly educational and includes diagrams and drawings to make the project more easily understood. Our strategy is that our prospect will use this as a tool to educate the internal decision making team, putting our companies name in front of them.

Once we get a preliminary approval on a contract, it’s like getting engaged. The intent is to create a permanent relationship, but any number of circumstances could send the deal south. We go the extra mile in everything we do. And like marriage, the real effort begins when the contract is signed and the honeymoon is over.

We also pay attention to how we’re being treated to ensure we’re making the right choice for a partner as well; do they meet their commitments for returned phone calls, decisions, meeting times. We try and get a sense of the culture; do people like working there, are the people friendly, is there a sense of mission.

A Happy Marriage

Great relationships generally have a number of common elements:

Mutual respect and trust

Congruency, integrity and accountability

Common interests and goals

Common cultural backgrounds

Financial stability

Renew Your Vows

We’re always focused on a longterm relationship, because it takes significantly less effort and cost to keep a client, then to gain a new one. Below is a list of things we strive to achieve in order to create a positive relationship with a client:

Deliver more value than we’re paid for and do things right the first time.

Become a respected and valuable member of the internal team.

Do the little extras without expecting extra compensation.

Meet or exceed every commitment we’ve made in the contract, including delivering on schedule.

Adapt to the nuances of the client, rather than making them conform to ours.

Be accessible and create an exceptional communication channel with the client.

Be likable and anticipate the client’s needs.

When we’ve done all this we’re in a prime position to renew the vows for the next project. We’ve developed a quality relationship and the client has no reason to look elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re getting married or acquiring a new customer, use common sense; find somebody that’s compatible and attractive to you, consistently give more than you get and be a positive force in their lives.

Dollars In The Details!

Dollars In The Details!

by: Daniel Levis

When it comes to your marketing message, the little things count. Trouble is, you’ll never come to respect how much, until you make a commitment to science.

Let me ask you something. Do you practice Kaizen?

Kai what?

Kaizen is a Japanese word meaning gradual and orderly, continuous improvement. Sound like you?

Or do you just wake up one morning & decide that you need to re do your site?

Do you keep a diary?

Not the Anne Frank kind, a chronological record of the results revealed by your ongoing marketing experience. Documentation of exactly what happened last time you changed the copy on your web site, ad campaign, or sales letter.

If you’re like most, you don’t bother to go to this trouble, & you don’t practice Kaizen.

Now I don’t expect you to take my word for it that seemingly trivial changes to your marketing message could have a DRAMATIC impact on your results. I know better than that, see.

But here’s a simple threestep method that you can try out for the next six weeks to prove it, for yourself.

There’s nothing more fascinating than watching human nature in action, & you’ll be amazed at the improvements you can make in your profitability in just a short period of time!

A Simple Three Step ขHow Toข

Follow this roadmap to easily & clearly document your experience with minimum hassle.

Go ahead & try it. It’s not rocket science.

Step 1 – Take a web page that you’re running right now, & decide what you would like to see it do better than it does. Would you like to improve the conversion rate? Are average dollars per visitor your thing? Maybe you need to drive cost out of generating optins, or referrals?

Make a copy of it

Now think about the flow of the page & what might be discouraging people from taking the desired action. Sometimes it’s the words you’ve used. Sometimes it’s the order of the words, or the phrasing of the words. It could be the headline, or the opening paragraph, take your best guess.

As a rule of thumb, changes to the headline & the opening paragraphs, or around the ขcalls to actionข will have more impact than changes elsewhere on the page. But sometimes even subtle changes like indenting the paragraphs, moving images from right to left or left to right can have surprising effects.

Make just one change on your copied page, and republish.

Now, create a folder on your hard drive with today’s date included in the file name, and save both of your pages as HTML files in it.

Step 2 – Advertise your pages with a redirect link that splits the traffic evenly between the two pages. This is known as ขsplit testingข. There are a number of products out there that you can use to do this.

Step 3 – The page that records the most conversions, is your ขcontrolข. You will want to reserve this judgment until you have seen it make at least 30 conversions for statistical validity.

Once you have your control, go back to your folder, & rename it by adding the current date to create a date range. So for example, your file name will change from ขsplit test 1 May 25 04ข, to ขsplit test 1 May 25 04 – Jun 25 04ข.

Now, carefully summarize the metrics that you have recorded in a note pad, & save it in the folder with the HTML files. Be careful to provide enough text explanation as necessary to ensure that you will be clear on the meaning of the results when you revisit them at a later date.

Also, be sure to document the traffic source. Different sources of traffic can have a remarkable impact on results, but that’s a whole other topic of discussion.

You are now ready to repeat the process.

Copy your ขcontrolข & make another change, thereby creating a new ขchallengerข, and so on.

To your success, & until next time, Good Selling!
