Tips to Protect Your Downloads or Products

Tips to Protect Your Downloads or Products

by: Radhika Venkata

1. Upload robots.txt file in to your root directory and include the folder name where you set your downloads.

More information on how to set robots.txt: http://www.webmasterscentral.com/wp/se/robotstxt.shtml

2. Set the permission of the download folder to 711 OR upload an index file to that folder. This makes that folder web inaccessible.

For example create a folder named ‘testก. Usually by default it will be chmoded to 755 or 777. Put some files like test.htm, test1.htm.

Now you type the URL of the folder yourdomain.com/test/

What will you see? You will see the folder /test with its files in it. Now upload an index file or chmod the folder to 711. Now access the URL. You will see index file or permission denied error.

3. Name the download folders something like กCDf54eSก. Not like กdownloadsก or กproductsก etc.

4. If your customer downloads your product once and don’t need or don’t have to access to your folder then you can set his access to expire for certain days.

For this you need a cgi script that controls your members access based on days, ip address or number of accesses. http://www.scripts4webmasters.com/ipppro/index.html This script also protects your thankyou.html pages and expires them after certain time.

5. If you have a membership site and you need to stop password abuse or sharing you can use scripts like:

http://www.scripts4webmasters.com/macpro.shtml

http://www.monstersubmit.com/sentry/

6. Protect your download links: Like if you keep …domain.com/downloads/product.zip, everybody knows the download URL. You can use cgi scripts that discloses the download path. http://www.cgiscripting.com/downloader.shtml

7. If you use If you are selling ebooks, you can use password protection to your ebooks. Once your ebook is protected, after your buyer downloads it, you can send it to him to open the ebook.

Some ebook compilers with this password protection features:

How to Create Cheap PDFs

How to Create Cheap PDFs

by: Kane Deng

*Introduction

Do you want to create your PDF ebooks? PDF is the industry publishing standard, and most of ebook authors are using PDF as their ebooks publishing format. But the problem is the commercial tools, which can be used to create PDF documents, are very expensive, and this is a heavy burden for most ebook authoring starters.

Now good news is there are a few ways to create Adobe Acrobat PDF files without having to spend a lot of money…

*Cheap PDF tools

Microsoft Office doesn’t come with builtin PDF support, so if you want to convert an Office document into PDF you have to purchase Adobe Acrobat, use an online conversion site, or download and install a special program or printer driver. You can learn more about this at

http://www.aexx.net/Arcane/doctopdf/

Unlike Microsoft Office, Corel’s Word Perfect Office DOES support PDF creation straight out of the box. You can download a 30 day evaluation copy of Word Perfect at

http://corel.com

Of course, what started this whole journey into PDFland was a desire on my part to create PDFs cheaply. So buying a whole new office suite, even if that suite doesn’t carry the Microsoft logo, kind of defeats the purpose. There is a different suggestion: use OpenOffice. OpenOffice comes with a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and a drawing program. The latest version of OpenOffice – OpenOffice 1.1 – even comes with PDF and Macromedia Flash export.

Oh, and OpenOffice is completely free. You can download it at

http://www.openoffice.org

If downloading and installing a whole new office suite doesn’t sound too appetizing, fear not. There are many other PDF tools we recommend!

For online document conversion (a la Adobe’s createpdf.adobe.com), we recommend goBCL at

http://www.gobcl.com

and an entirely different Carnegie Mellon’s TOM Server at

http://wheel.compose.cs.cmu.edu:8001/cgibin/browse/objweb

Both services appear to be free, but Carnegie Mellon’s can be a bit flaky at times.

If you have Postscript files that you would like to convert to PDFs online, we recommend PS2PDF at

http://www.ps2pdf.com/convert/index.htm

If you’d rather download and install a PDF converter on your computer, you have a BUNCH of options. There is a free converter called ขGymnastข at

http://www.oakworth.demon.co.uk/gymnast.htm

The registration code is in the yellow box at the top of the page.

And, if you’re willing to ditch Windows together [or partition your computer so that you can run multiple operating systems], you can try Mandrake Linux 9.1, it comes with a builtin PDF printer driver. Other flavors of *nix may offer the same features. Check around.

Why a Website Design Speaks Volumes about Your Com

Why a Website Design Speaks Volumes about Your Company?

by: Anthony Jewell

Whether a business has just got off the ground or has been established for years, startup and long running companies are looking to the internet to expand their sales as well as service to customers. Many new websites are going up and with so many people opting to go with the cheapest route or the quickest design process, sometimes the quality of a website gets left behind. Lets face it, you wouldn’t want a possible client coming into your office, looking around at a mess, so why would you send them to your virtual office looking like one?

People very often go to a companies website to get more information, it is allot easier and more convenient then calling them or writing them a letter. The first thing they see when they go to their site(that is, the first thing that pops into their heads) is either กwow, these guys are professional, I want to deal with themก or ‘there site is awful, how can they act professional if they do not look professionalก(well that may not be everyone’s exact words, but you see what I am getting at). We all think this when we visit a website, haven’t you ever felt a little bit easier or more relaxed when purchasing something off a site with a professional look? I bet you that if a site doesn’t look professional then you won’t even consider purchasing an item or using their service!

Another important aspect of a website is how long it takes to download. Allot of people say if it takes longer then 30 seconds to download then people will leave, this is true. I know that even on a DSL connection if a site is taking too long to download I will jump to another site. If your site doesn’t download in at least 3060 seconds for all users(dial up taking a little longer), then you need to redesign your site.

Your site must not only look good and download quick, it must work good. There is nothing worse then visiting a website with pages that haven’t been created yet, script errors popping up and only half of the information seems to be there. This will definitely annoy anyone who is visiting your website, they probably won’t come back for a while, if at all.

Another important aspect of a good website is allowing visitors to contact you in one way or another. A simple email address or contact form on a contact us page will do wonders. People like to know they can get in touch with you with just a simple click of the mouse. Make sure that there is a link to your contact us page on every page, including in your main navigation. This will give users a feeling of being close to you, as they can contact you at any time.

Use these tips as well as your own common sense and you will be well on your way to having a great Looking, Working & Downloading Website!

Protect Yourself with a Porn Filter

Protect Yourself with a Porn Filter

by: Nick Smith

The harmful affects of pornography use and addiction are well documented by science. As with most things in life, prevention is the most effective way to avoid ever having a problem with pornography.

The internet is a wonderful place to access information, read updated news, and connect with people from all over the globe. Unfortunately, pornography on the internet is everywhere, and it isn’t always easy to avoid. Even people taking responsible measures to keep porn off of their computer screens can stumble across it sometimes. The tips found in this article will help you protect yourself and your family online from inappropriate pictures and text.

Take measures to filter spam. Spammers can make money if only one person of the thousands of people they send sexually explicit emails to clicks on their ad and pays for their service. Do everything you can to keep those emails from ever reaching your inbox. If you have allowed your children to have their own email accounts, filtering spam is the best way to ensure inappropriate images never become accessible to them through email. A quick list of things you can do to eliminate spam includes:

• Only give your email address out to people you know and trust. Do not put your personal email address down for every mailing list or website that asks for it. Many free email services exist now – set up a free account with one of them and use that to sign up for mailing lists.

• Never click on any links in spam and if at all possible, avoid ever opening the email. Both of these actions confirms to spammers that you actively use your email account and you will likely start to receive more spam.

• Purchase and use a spam filter. Many come packaged with a porn filter as well as other features that will help keep inappropriate content off of your computer screen.

Be careful what you download. This should be a universal precaution you take by now each and every time you download something off the internet. Viruses, spyware, and pornography can very easily be hidden in the files that you download – prevention in this case is much easier than fixing the problem after the files have already made their way onto your hard drive. Only download files from sources that you trust, and if you ever have a question as to whether something contains a virus or pornography, do NOT download it.

Use a search engine to find websites. Pornographers use domain names that are similar to popular websites or brands in hopes that people will type in the address incorrectly and end up at their pornography site. I knew a child that wanted to look up codes for his favorite video game, so he typed in the name of the game and ข.com.ข He had the presence of mind to close the browser and tell his parents, but was still exposed to the material. One of the best ways to avoid this is searching for the address in Google. Then you can preview the results in a textonly format before clicking on the link to go to the page. Many of the popular search engines have a builtin porn filter that you can adjust to control the type of content you don’t want to appear in the search results. Others even offer ขfor kidsข versions of their search engines that only return pages deemed appropriate for children.

Use filtering software that includes a porn filter. No matter how careful you are about the sites you visit, chances are good that someday you will accidentally come across a porn site. A porn filter will help ensure that inappropriate material is blocked when you or someone in your family stumbles across a pornographic website. The parents of the boy who stumbled across pornography while looking for his favorite Nintendo game quickly installed a porn filter to make sure their son was protected in the future.

Avoid pornography offline. Porn was around long before the internet. Carry around your own internal porn filter and avoid places that you know will have inappropriate images, movies, or books displayed. If your children are with you, be extra cautious of where they are in the store. If you think there is a chance that they may be able to access inappropriate material while you are shopping, let the store manager know of your concerns. Likely, you are not the only one who is worried about the issue, and real changes can come about from one person simply speaking up.

Take the appropriate precautions now to avoid pornography. If you or someone you know has a problem with pornography use or addiction, seek professional help. Pornography problems not only affect the individual viewing the picture but everyone who interacts with that person.

5 Stress Reducing Computer Tips

5 Stress Reducing Computer Tips

by: Sharron Senter

For most entrepreneurs computers are an intrical part of our business. An entrepreneur can not afford for their computer to be inoperable even for a minute. Implement some of these quick and affordable computer tips to keep your computer healthy and making money for your business.

#1 Double Internet Speed

Comcast recently doubled cable modem download speeds. Now you can surf the Internet and download files twice as fast. However, you need to power cycle your cable modem [unplug it for 30 seconds and reboot computer] for the new configuration to be automatically downloaded to your modem.

#2 Connecting to Work from Home

Having trouble with your corporate VPN connection when working from home? Oftentimes this can be fixed with a simple firmware upgrade to your network router or a slight change in settings.

#3 Sudden Lost Connection

Has your Internet connection suddenly stopped working? Frequently computer users with softwarebased firewalls suddenly find their Internet connection no longer available. Oftentimes when you download a software update, it can change your original configurations. As a quick test, disable the software firewall. If connectivity returns, it’s a misconfiguration issue.

#4 Slow Email and Internet Browsing

Has your computer been working wonderfully, but suddenly email or Internet browsing is painfully slow? It could be your cable connection went out. And although the connection has returned, your computer and the cable modem may be having difficulty communicating. Try power cycling your modem.

#5 Eliminate Popups

Google offers a free popup blocker with its toolbar. Download the toolbar at www.toolbar.google.com. System requirements: Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. The popup blocker requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.

Learn the money saving secrets of an accomplished

Learn the money saving secrets of an accomplished Software Engineer.

by: Steve Garratt

* Have you ever forgotten a password, or a user name, or some other piece of important information?

* Do you have a system for remembering your passwords but forgot the system?

* Do you avoid registering for things because you can’t cope with yet another password?

* Would you like to keep all your important details safe and remember just one single password?

* Would you like to find a free tool that will solve all your problems?

I had the same problems and more for years, I was getting so frustrated trying to remember all this important security stuff that I got to the point where something had to be done. It isn’t just Internet passwords either, what about bank card PIN numbers, credit cards PINกs, passwords for the telephone answering machine. The list goes on and on and it never stops getting bigger and bigger.

*** Good News I Found a free Solution ***

Iกve been using a utility called KeyPass for some time now and itกs made my life a lot easier. I would like to show you how it can make your life easier too.

First of all take a look at my review of this program at: http://howdoi.com/keypass.shtml

Now take a look at the tutorial at: http://www.codeproject.com/tools/KeePass.asp

If you have read the review and you think that KeyPass can be of use to you, follow the instructions below to download and start using it to manage your passwords.

1. Download And Install KeyPass

Download the latest stable version of KeyPass from http://keepass.sourceforge.net/download.php

Now this is not the easiest of web sites to download stuff from so if the instructions for downloading look too daunting or you have any trouble with the download then please email me at [email protected] and I will email it to you.

The source code is available for this program but you can ignore it unless you are a developer.

Click the link: กDownload from one of the SourceForge.net download serversก. This will take you to another web page where you should locate the กsetupก download for 32 bit windows link. (It only works on Windows.) Clicking on this link will take you to a further page allowing you to choose the server to download from. Choose a server close to you and click the icon in the download column.

The file should begin to download after you have specified a location for it on your hard drive. When the download is complete click on the file and install it.

2. Start KeyPass and create a database

Click the KeyPass icon on your desktop to run it then select กNew Databaseก from the กFileก menu. Enter a password for the database. Click กOKก repeat the password and click กOKก again.

Select กSave Databaseก from the กFileก menu and select a suitable folder and filename for the database then click กSaveก.

You have now created a password database.

3. Add some entries to the database

Right click in the left hand pane of the KeyPass window and select กAdd Password Groupก from the context menu. Type ‘testก into the box and click กOKก. This creates a new group folder called ‘testก into which you can add entries.

Left click on the ‘testก group in the left hand pane then right click in the right hand pane. Select กAdd Entryก from the context menu.

Make up something for the Title, Username, URL and Password.

Notice that clicking the ก…ก button to the right of the Password field toggles between masked and unmasked view. When the password is unmasked you can copy and paste it into another application.

KeyPass automatically generates a password in the กAdd Entryก dialogue so you can use this one if you wish or type in your own. Clicking on the กGenก button underneath the ก…ก gives you KeyPassกs กPassword Generatorก where you can easily create a password without having to dream one up.

click กOKก to commit the entry to the database.

Add some more groups and entries by repeating the above process.

4. Set options

Select กOptionsก from the กEditก menu then click the กStart and Exitก tab.

Check กAutomatically open last used database on startupก. Check กAutomatically save database on exitก. Check ‘remember last opened.

then click กOKก

5. Save and Close

Close the KeyPass window. When you open it again it will load up your database for you after you have entered the master password.

Well thatกs all there is to it. You can now add all of your passwords into your new database and recall them whenever you want.

If you are still undecided whether to start using KeyPass then take another look at my review at: http://howdoi.com/keypass.shtml

And take another look at the KeyPass tutorial over at http://www.codeproject.com/tools/KeePass.asp for a better understanding of the application.

If you have any questions about this article or you have a request for a future กHowDoiก please email me at [email protected].

5 Simple Steps to Protect your Digital Downloads

5 Simple Steps to Protect your Digital Downloads

by: Priya Florence Shah

A couple of days ago, I was searching for a popular eBook online.

Now Iกm not going to tell you the name of this eBook for reasons youกll understand in the next few minutes.

Okay, so here I was, opening Google, entering the name of the eBook clicking search, and checking through the first few pages of search results.

> Forward to Page 5 of Google

I saw a link that looked like a PDF document.

Right click > open in new window

There, in full glory, was the eBook I was searching for!

The complete eBook, mind you, not a trial or demo sitting there for the world to download.

And this is a product that sells for over $25 online!!

Obviously Iกm not going to tell you the name of the eBook because it would not be fair to the reseller.

But it just made me realise that one of the reasons digital theft is so prevalent is simply because… its so EASY!

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t condone theft of any kind digital or otherwise.

But would YOU shell out $25 for a product that everyone can กlegallyก download off the 5th page of Google?

Most people would just shrug their shoulders, hit the save button and thank their lucky stars.

Result: The opposite of $ KACHING $ for the sellers

One of the problems with selling digital products online is that it is so SIMPLE to do. So now everyone and their grandmother wants to do it.

But most newbies have no idea that it requires only a few simple steps to ensure a moderate degree of security for your downloads.

So here Iกve outlined the five most BASIC security steps That anyone selling digital products online must take.

These will take you only a few minutes to do, and you do not need any special software or programming knowledge.

1. ZIP THAT FILE

The biggest problem arises when sellers store their downloads as PDF documents, as in my experience above.

Now you should know that Google, Altavista and many other search engines can read and list PDF files.

While this may not be a problem for those adding content to their sites in the form of PDF newsletters and reports, it also means that you must never store a product you want to SELL as a PDF file (unless it is in a password protected folder).

It gets worse. Google also converts your PDF files into HTML documents. So ordinary browsers not only have access to your PDF file, but horror of horrors they can download your SOURCE FILE as well!!

The next logical step is for them to customize it with their own links, compile it and sell it or give it away.

Result: The opposite of $ KACHING $ for the sellers …AND the author.

A simple way of keeping your files out of the reach of spiders is to upload them as a zip file. Search engines cannot look inside zip files (yet) and list their contents.

2. CREATE AN INDEX.HTML FILE

You MUST have an index.html file in EVERY folder. It acts like a curtain that keeps your files away from prying eyes.

A folder without an index file is like a house without walls. Everyone can enter and help themselves to the valuables.

The กindex.htmก file is the default file that opens when you click on the link here

http://ebizwhizpublishing.com/

If you don’t create an index.htm or index.html file, youกd be allowing everyone to directly access the root directory of the folder where you store your downloads.

Here is a folder I uploaded to show you what happens when you DON’t have an index file. http://ebizwhizpublishing.com/test/

As you can see, all the files stored in it are clearly visible and ready to download.

And yes, feel free to help yourself I won’t accuse you of stealing 🙂

3. SHOW PEEPING TOMS THE EXIT

You can use a simple script to redirect peeping Toms back to your home page.

Hereกs the easiest way to do it using what it called a กmeta refresh tag.ก Add it between the Header tags like this.

Just replace my URL with your own in the example above and paste it into the head of your document (before your text).

You can see how it works by clicking on the test folder here. http://ebizwhizpublishing.com/redirect/

Now even though you click on the folder URL, you will be sent to my home page.

4. SPIDERPROOF YOUR DOWNLOAD PAGES

To prevent search engine spiders from reading and listing the download pages that link to your eBooks add the tag below in the head of the document.

This กRobotก tag tells the spider that this page is not to be spidered or indexed. As a result it should never show up on a search.

5. CHANGE YOUR DOWNLOAD LINKS OFTEN

To prevent unscrupulous people from posting your download links on forums or message boards, change the folder or file name where you store them from time to time, even if it means having to change the download links in your merchant account.

Using these methods will give you a good degree of satisfaction, knowing that you have taken the most basic steps to protect your digital valuables and at absolutely no cost to you.

If you want greater security and more information on plugging the security loopholes in your website, you should take a look at this very revealing report by Bogdan Ravaru.

Get Viral…

Get Viral…

by: Denise Ryder

Hey, using eBooks, eReports and eCourses is a fantastic way to build a list.

You can use these things as an กincentiveก for joining your affiliate program, as a ‘thank youก for visiting your site, a กbonusก when someone purchases a product/service from you. The possibilities are endless!!

Many eBusiness people use them, however, some are making TWO HUGE MISTAKES when they do use them. Here is what they do…

1. They upload these things to their site and publish the download link WITHOUT capturing an email address and name.

The WHOLE POINT of using this กstuffก is to build a list. YOU CAN’t MARKET TO A GHOST!!! Instead of uploading your items to your server and just publishing the download link, work smarter… Set yourself up with a minisite where you can direct people to and for the PRICE of their email address and name, they can have the download link sent to them.

NOW you have a warm body to market to AND you know what they are interested in.

2. They don’t take advantage of customizing eBooks, etc with THEIR OWN links.

You want your marketing efforts to pay off for YOU. If you are giving away an eBook with someone elseกs links in it then all your marketing is paying off for the person whose links are inside. WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT??

There are tons of people out there falling into that trap. However, right now YOU’re my concern. If they want to not bother spending a little extra and purchase a customization license thatกs their downfall. Actually, we want those people because if they distribute our eBook with our links inside, great…they are marketing for us.

But YOU..no, no, no my friend. You are into working smarter…not harder. So ensure that if there is a customization license and if you can afford it, then upgrade to it. Get your links, site name, url and in some cases ads in the books, courses and reports you are giving away.

THEN encourage those who do request your reports, etc to give them away to their networks, downlines and associates. Your links and info are laced within and when people open it they see YOU and THATกS WHAT YOU WANT ;o)

Here are two products which have customization licenses available, which won’t break the bank.

1. กHow To Turn A Simple Sign Up Process Into An… Unstoppable Income Stream.ก (eBook) http://www.profitspace.com/book.html

2. กHow To Guarantee eBusiness Successก (eCourse) http://www.profitspace.com/success/cust.html

A กminisiteก is included so all you have to do is paste in your autoresponder address or web form and you are good to go.

Viral marketing is the most cost effective marketing tool we have. An eBook or eCourse laced with your links inside can end up in more places than you could dream possible, and of course reach on your own.

Use viral marketing to its FULLEST and get it pulling for you and your ebusiness ;o)

Upload??…Download??……Help!!

Upload??…Download??……Help!!

by: Terri Seymour

How do I upload an ebook to my site? How do I download an ebook or program? I seem to be getting this question a lot lately as well as a specific request to write an article on this subject, so here is the info on how to download and/or upload.

First of all, let me explain the difference. A download is when you กpick upก an ebook, program, etc. from another computer and bring it กdownก to your computer.

An upload is just the opposite. You are sending something from your computer กupก to your hostกs computer. It will then appear on your website.

To download, all you do is click on the download link and save the file/program to your desktop or wherever you want to save it.

When you click on the link a box will pop up. This box will have a Save & a Cancel & an Open button. If you want to Save the program, click the Save button. A Save As box will then popup. This is where you can change the file name if you want to. Also, this is when you tell your computer where you want to put the file.

I save everything to my desktop until I can take a look at it and decide where to go from there.

For a PDF file, you want to right click on the download link and then click กSave Target Asก.

Also, some files will be downloaded as a compressed กzipก file. Compressed files can be downloaded faster and more efficiently. To กunzipก or separate these files once you have them downloaded, you will need an Unzip Wizard. You can find a good one at: http://newbieclub.com/wizard/?web_success

The first step to uploading is to open your FTP site via Internet Explorer. FTP or File Transfer Protocol, is a set of instructions for the computers to use to transfer files. To do this, you simply type กftp://ก (without the quotes) followed by your username (provided by your web host company) then a ก:ก (without the quotes) and then your password (also provided by your host company). After all this, place an ก@ก followed by your host address.

Here is an example FTP site: กftp://MOE:[email protected]

Once this site loads, you should see a list of files and folders. These files and folders represent your webpages. To upload your file, simply locate it on your hard drive and then drag it onto this window. The file will upload and then you will be all set!

Uploading and downloading may seem confusing if you are a beginner, but once you have a better under standing of what they actually mean, getting the hang of doing it is much easier!

Beware of Spyware

Beware of Spyware

by: Nowshade Kabir

One day, you suddenly realize that your computer started to work noticeably slower than it used to. You decide to run defragmentation of your hard drive and add more virtual memory to the system. No luck! May be, it’s probably some viruses, you reckon turning on your virus scanning software. Even after running the antivirus program you notice that the problem won’t resolve. Not understanding what’s happening frustrated you pick up the phone. It’s time to call your techsupport. Sounds familiar? You are not alone! Each day, thousands of users are facing similar problems caused by malicious software called Spyware. According to Dell technical support, nowadays 12 percent of their support calls involve problems related to some kinds of Spyware. Microsoft reports that fifty percent of all computer crushes are caused by Spyware, viruses and Trojans.

What is a Spyware?

Spyware – also named Malware or Adware – are malicious software programs, which most of the time get installed on your computer without your knowledge. These programs are capable of doing many outrageous, sinister things to your computer such as changing computer settings, tracking your online behavior, monitoring and controlling your computer, recording your keystrokes, displaying unwanted advertisement and reporting needed information back to the person behind it.

The main types of Spyware are:

Key loggers: This type of Spyware copies everything you type to a file and send it to the hacker. The more sophisticated type, which is used for identity theft, copies the information you provide when you are connected to a secure website.

Browser hijacker: It modifies browser settings without your permission. This Spyware is capable of changing your start page, search page, search tool bar and redirect your url to specific pages.

Email redirector: Surreptitiously copies all your incoming and outgoing emails and sends to the hacker.

Dialers: This spyware install themselves to your dialup settings and dials numbers without your knowledge, often to out of country numbers.

Collectware: The purpose of this Spyware is to track your surfing habit and transmitting the statistical data to the hacker. This information later gets sold to advertisement companies.

Adware: This Spyware downloads all sorts of banner advertisements every time you take some action such as typing a word on your search tool.

Why my antivirus program does not block a Spyware?

Although, Spyware uses same tactics like ขTrojanข virus, technically it is not a virus. A virus is a program written to create trouble or possibly harm your computer system. Viruses are capable of replicate, evolve and cause severe damages to your computer files, registry or even hardware. Spyware, on the other hand, does not harm your computer intentionally. Any nuisance like system slow down is the collateral damage, which occurs while the Spyware serves its mission of monitoring your activities and making unwanted changes to your user experience.

People rarely read the fine prints of the user agreements while downloading a file, a program, a game or other free stuffs from the Internet. Unethical sites use this to their advantage and add tiny Spyware with the file you are downloading.

The antivirus programs can not be sure, whether this program is installed deliberately by you or it’s a malicious Spyware. This makes identifying and blocking a Spyware difficult for an Antivirus program. However, things are started to change! Major antivirus companies are planning to integrate antispyware programs to their existing products very soon.

How did I get infected with a Spyware?

There are numerous ways how you might end up with having a Spyware on your system.

When you download and install programs, games, smilies, pictures, screensavers from dubious sites, there is a big chance that you might install a sneaky Spyware along the way.

Some websites and popup windows try to download and install Spyware while you are there. According a recent analysis of sexbased websites, up to 80 percent of these sites are now being used to upload Spyware, worms and Trojans to unsuspecting visitors.

Some addons to you browser that is supposed to enhance your browser experience may secretively install Spyware.

The most cynical method of infecting you with Spyware is when you receive a sudden popup ad, which claims that your computer is contaminated and you have to run certain program to cure your system. If you are credulous enough to run this program, it just installs a Spyware instead of eliminating any.

How to fight back?

If you carefully follow the instructions outlined below, your chances of getting infected with Spyware are pretty slim.

Update your Windows

Allow your version of Windows to update it automatically. Ensure that you have all the latest security patches installed.

Use Firefox as your default browser

Since Internet Explorer is the main target for many Spyware, you will be better of with Mozilla Firefox. Moreover, it is a better browser than IE in many aspects.

Be extremely careful with your downloads

Try not to download anything from a unknown site. If you still feel like getting a shareware or freeware program check it out on one of these online Spyware database. Spychecker (http://www.spychecker.com/) is one such service, and Camtech 2000กs Spy Chaser (http://camtech2000.net/Pages/SpyChaser.html) is a nifty downloadable database of nearly 1000 spywareinfested programs.

Use an AntiSpyware application

Download and install one of the following antispyware programs: Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/), Spybot (http://www.safernetworking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html) and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Although, Microsoft’s AntiSpyware (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) is still at beta stage, I am using it and very happy with its performance.

Get a Firewall

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you are probably fine! In other cases, if your computer is connected to the Internet directly you should get a firewall and install it. Zone alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp) is a great firewall you can download for free.

A recently conducted survey of the Top Network Security threats in 2005 reveals that twothirds of IT managers and administrators believe that Spyware will be the number one threat to network security. So don’t take any chance! Make sure that you are protected!
