I am constantly bombarded with all sorts of advertisements, singlepage sites, and sites offering very little real content but some wonderful new กproductก or กserviceก for sale that purports to make its customers wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.
For the purposes of this article, letกs refer to Amazing Formula (http://www.amazingformula.com) as an example of such a site. (Note: I have never purchased this product and can make no claim, verification or guarantee one way or the other as to its effectiveness. The sole purpose of my mentioning this site is as a study of the ad copy within.)
There isn’t very much in terms of กcontentก; the marketing of the กbribesก is confined to a single page, with a hyperlink to ‘testimonialsก which may or may not be legitimate. Yet, this site has been around in some form for nearly four years, according to The Internet Wayback Machine (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.amazingformula.com), with the same basic กcontentก and no significant updates. Why? Because it works.
What makes this website and others like it profitable, even without a significant content update in 4 years? The sales copy. The sales copy of this page uses simple, but effective techniques to trigger the user into buying the product, in this case a CDROM indicating how to sell anything to anyone at any time. Letกs look at some of these techniques now.
Thatกs right, I, Adam Senour, am going to give away millions of dollarsก worth of secrets to you and Iกm going to do it WITHOUT CHARGING YOU A SINGLE RED CENT!!! No ebooks to download, No expensive CDROMs to purchase, No courses to subscribe to, NOTHING! You too will be a website copy writing genius, able to sell your goods and services at will!
Short paragraphs. Users traditionally don’t wish to read long blocks of text. They like information concise, simple, and to the point.
กYouก words/secondperson perspective. This is arguably the most misunderstood and underrated aspect of copy writing. When reading sales copy, users are looking not for general information on the product. They want the answer to one simple question: กWhatกs in it for me?ก Using words such as กyouก, กyourก, and กyourselfก, while being generic in nature, go a long way toward establishing a website rapport with your customers.
Bold, Underline, Italics. Highlighting important phrases with bold, underline, and italics allows your customer to quickly scan and decipher the nature of your copy and the key elements of it. Bold, underline, and italics can be used in conjunction with colour to further distinguish vital elements of your marketing message.
However, it is strongly advised that you use bold, underline, and italics sparingly in order to ensure that only your most important points are receiving the full attention of your customers. Use bold, italics, and underline sparingly.
The colour coding of important words, and the selection of those colours. กCoolก colours such as Blues and greens are traditionally used to relax the user and put him/her in a positive mood conducive to sales; and กhotก colours such as reds, yellows and oranges are meant to incite the user into making a purchasing decision.
Headings and subheadings. Headings and subheadings should be used to break up long blocks of text into shorter and easiertoread sections. In the case of the Amazing Formula website, graphic headings are used to break up the content; however, for search engine reasons, you may wish to consider textbased headings to split up your content into sections.
Bullet lists. These lists can be numbered, as this one is, or they can be unordered, as the Amazing Formula ones are. There doesn’t seem to be much difference in either event, as long as the copy for each bullet remains concise and to the point as in point 2; although the unordered list bullets can be stylized with graphics, as the Amazing Formula website has done.
A call to action. What do you want your customer to do? Where would you like them to go next? Give your customer at least one clear and understandable path to follow to make the appropriate action.
In the case of the Amazing Formula site, there are not one, but 2 กClick to order via our secure server!ก buttons as well as an order hyperlink in the menu on the top of the page. The garden path, albeit a very short one in this case, is clearly laid out for the customer to follow.
These are the seven secrets of The Shriekers. Implementing them on your website should lead to a significant increase in sales and profits.

3. D Desire
The ‘desire’ section of your message is where you introduce your proposed ‘solution’ to the problem stated.
Fact is, people need solutions to problems. To be an ultrasuccessful email marketer, your job is simply to give them what they want!
4. A Action
Getting your rea.ders to take positive action, to act on your message, is probably the most important part of your entire campaign.
But a high response rate is only possible if you’ve created the flow of Attention, Interest and Desire successfully.
To encourage immediate action, you should tie a specific deadline or give ‘scarcity’ to the solution you’re offering. For example, a 40% discount for the next 2 days only. Let them know that if they miss this dea.dline, the discount would end and they would have to pay a higher price for the same solution.

Iกm not a baseball fan. Never have been. In fact, I hate the sport. However, I am a Barry Bonds fan. Hereกs why: Barry Bonds possesses the exact same intangibles every great sales letter possesses. Heกs loyal, consistent, powerful, and hits a ton of home runs, year after year after year! Those are all things that great sales letters do and have done from the very beginning.

And believe it or not, of all the aforementioned intangibles, the number one intangible is loyalty. All great sales letters remain loyal to one of the oldest of all copywriting basics: the AIDA formula!

You MUST write every single sales letter using the following classic AIDA formula. If you are loyal to the formula, the consistency, power and home runs will follow. Thatกs a proven fact. Hereกs the formula:

A=ATTENTION I=INTEREST D=DESIRE A=ACTION

Letกs break down each letter, so that you can understand the full import of the formula:

A=ATTENTION: The very first thing your sales letter must do is get your prospects attention. The best way to do that is with an effective headline.

So, whatกs an effective headline? An effective headline is any headline that answers this question: กWhatกs in it for me?ก Thatกs all your prospects really care about. Whatกs in it for them? Hereกs an uptothesecond example of an effective headline: กWant More Sales? Write A Barry Bond Sales Letter.ก

So, what makes the title of this article an effective headline? Three things: First of all, I answered the กWhatกs in it for meก questionwhich in this case would be more sales. Secondly, I brilliantly interjected the curiosity factor. I made you wonder what a Barry Bonds sales letter is. And last but not least, the headline made you read this article.

And that my friend is the whole point! You want prospects to read your sales letter!

Now, we come to the second letter in the aforementioned AIDA formula: I=กINTEREST.ก After you get your prospects attention, you want to get them กINTERESTEDก in your product or service. You do that by immediately telling them what your headline promises. You don’t waste their time with a bunch of fluff and garbage that nobody but you cares about.

Tell them what they want to know, starting with the very first paragraph, and continue to tell them, right through to the very last paragraph. If you keep them interested, theyกll keep reading, right to the very endjust like you’re doing now with this article.

Next comes the third letter letter in the formula: D=กDESIRE.ก You have to make your prospects กDESIREก your product or service. And the way to do that is with benefits, benefits and more benefits!

Remember, just keep telling them what your headline promised. Also, tell them what they stand to gain by purchasing your product or service. More importantly, tell them what they stand to lose, if they don’t purchase.

Push their emotional กhot buttonsก, by using magic selling words like, new, save, amazing, free, guaranteed, security, norisk, look younger, feel better, etc!

Finally, we come to the last letter in the formula, but certainly not the least: A=กACTION.ก You want to close your sales letter with a call to action! In other words, ask them for the order. Itกs important to ask for the order at least six or more times.

Something else thatกs very effective is to include a post script (P.S.) at the end of your sales letter. Your postscript should include an enticement of some sort, to get your prospects to order NOW. You should also use the postscript as a final call to กACTION!ก

Hereกs an example of an effective postscript:

P.S. If you order within the next 7 days, youกll also receive a personalized calculator mouse pad absolutely FREE, with your companyกs name embossed in gold lettering! Order NOW!ก

You can also use a post script to tie everything together, by summarizing your most important benefits.

Another reason that you should use a postscript is strictly elementary. Studies have shown that most people, when reading a sales letter will read the headline and then immediately zoom right down to the bottom of the page to check out the price, and see if your offer is anything that theyกd be interested in.

WARNING: Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the AIDA formula. Itกs been proven over time. Itกs powerful, and it works. In fact, the power is in its simplicity.

Also, when writing a sales letter, there are two critical points you must NEVER, EVER forget:

Most people don’t make a buying decision based on logic. They make a buying decision based on their emotions. They justify their decision with logic, after the fact.

People don’t want to feel like they’re being coerced or pushed into anything. They want to feel like they arrived at a buying decision completely of their own free will.

Go back and read those two points again. Obviously, thatกs a very fine line to walk. But you MUST learn the distinction, if you want to master the art of writing effective sales letters.

In closing, follow the AIDA formula faithfully and it will rarely let you down.

And remember, when writing your sales letters, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS answer that one question we all want to know: กWhatกs in it for me?ก

1. What is PageRank and why should I care about it?

PageRank is a formula that assigns a value to every page in the Google index. Google displays search results based on an algorithm which includes the value of PageRank. So the higher your siteกs PageRank, the more likely it is that you will receive a top listing on the search result page when someone types in the keywords for your site.

2. How can I view the PageRank of my own or other websites?

Itกs very simple to see anyoneกs PageRank. Just download and install the Google toolbar. Itกs a very quick and easy install. Just be sure to choose the Advanced option during the install so the PageRank of each site you visit will be displayed on the toolbar.

3. How is PageRank calculated?

Iกve seen a formula for PageRank posted on Internet websites and forums but have failed to see anyone give a satisfactory explanation of the formula. The formula appears so complex you would probably have to be a mathematician to even have a chance to decipher it anyway. It looks something like this:

PR(A) = (1d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn))

I will attempt to explain it for you in plain English. Basically it works like this. The more links that point to your website the higher your PageRank will be. The higher the PageRank of the referring page that has your link on it, the more PageRank you receive from Google. For every outgoing link that a page has, the value of those links drop. So for example, a link from a page with a PageRank of 4, and only 3 other links, is worth more than a page with a PageRank of 5 and 100 links. It is also believed that Google assigns more value to a link that comes from a site with similar content. So as you can see, there are many variables when calculating PageRank.

4. How do I increase my PageRank?

Again, PageRank can be increased by the number of incoming links to your website from other sites on the Internet. In addition, it requires anywhere from five to seven times more to get from one level of PageRank to the next.

So for example, (and this is not a true formula) if 100 PageRank 3 sites with a link to your page give you a PageRank of 4, then it would take around 500 more PageRank 3 sites to link to you before you became PageRank 5. However if you had 1 link from a PageRank 8 site, that might be enough to give a higher PageRank all by its self. Itกs really all relative and trying to figure it out will simply drive you mad, so don’t bother. 🙂 The best thing you can do is obtain as many quality incoming links from other sites with similar content as you possibly can.

Another important factor is the number of pages on your site. The more pages on your site, the higher potential you have to gain in PageRank. More pages doesn’t mean you will get a higher PageRank only that you won’t hit a ceiling. Apparently Google has a cut off point somewhere on the highest PageRank it will give to sites with a low number of pages.

5. When will my PageRank be updated or change?

According to the Google website, they update the index about once a month. However if you spend any amount of time reading search engine forums, you will find that results vary for every webmaster. PageRank may not update or may change drastically for a long period of time which is often times unexplainable. Usually as long as you follow good web site optimization techniques and maintain enough quality incoming links, the index will eventually assign your website PageRank and adjust any changes which may have been made in error.

8. WARN Let them know the pain theyกll experience if they don’t use your product. i.e. If you’re selling a wrinkle cream let them know how dry their face will be and how much deeper their wrinkles will get without your product if thatกs true. Don’t lie.

9. NOW Tell them why they should buy right now.

The well known American author, Sinclair Lewis was touring the Universities and Colleges in the Mid West, lecturing on the Art of Creative Writing. At the start of his lecture, he would say to the packed lecture theatre, "How many of you would like to be great writers?"

The point he was making was that in order to write a great novel, one had to possess the self discipline to actually sit down and write! Without that, it did not matter how many lectures they attended or books on How to Write a Novel they read, the main thing was to begin writing.

Exactly the same is true of running a profitable business on the Web (or anywhere else). All Lewisกs students needed to write was a pen, paper and an ample supply of ideas and a determination to write. All YOU need is a PC, some ideas and the same determination to succeed. A few dollars/pounds/escudos will help, but the beauty of the Web is that you can start out and, at least in the early days, you need spend next to nothing. Many of the programmes I will introduce you to are totally free and on the others you can usually start off without committing any cash, only signing up when you are confident of the service offered and your ability to promote it.

You can be taught how to set up a successful business, how to make money from someone elseกs idea, how to set it up, how to market it, how to advertise, even how to keep your accounts and keep the tax man happy, but however much you learn, you will never make any money unless you:
