Link Popularity A Thing of the Past?

Link Popularity A Thing of the Past?

by: Courtney Heard

Iกve found myself involved in a lot of discussions about the dropping importance of link popularity lately. Numerous people have said to me that they think incoming links no longer hold as much weight as they once did, and that the only links worth obtaining are relevant links. I have to vehemently disagree.

First of all, before Sergey Brin or Larry Page even learned the word กalgorithmก, there were web sites that practiced the fine art of reciprocal linking. PreGoogle link exchanges served only one purpose and that was to develop direct traffic from those links. This still works! Somewhere in our PR worries and link popularity ambitions, we forgot one important fact : you never know when the next link you obtain for your site will be a direct traffic producer. For example moving.ca, provides daily traffic to www.abalone.ca through a small, text link on their links page. This does not come up on Google as an incoming link to Abalone Designs, but it is one our most valuable incoming links, nonetheless.

Now, as far as your ranking is concerned on Google, links still hold weight. Search for just about any term or phrase and check the #1 ranked siteกs incoming links versus the others. 9 times out of 10, The first ranked site will have a few more links than the others. The times when I see lower ranked sites having more incoming links than the #1 site, generally speaking, the #1 site has better content, and more of it or this siteกs incoming links have anchor text that contain the exact search term or phrase you searched for and the others don’t. Itกs still the same old formula. Offer a contentrich, userfriendly site with incoming links that have relevant anchor text and your siteกll do alright.

Relevant anchor text is important, but what about having your link on relevant sites? Links on relevant sites or pages have one tremendous bonus and that is targeted traffic. This is providing, of course, the link produces direct traffic. Other than that, I say links on relevant pages aren’t that much more important than other links. Take, for example, the incoming links to seoinc.com the very first page that shows up on Google when you search for seoinc.comกs incoming links, is csmonitor.com. A Christian Science magazine! If Iกm missing some link between religion and SEO, please inform me, but otherwise, these two sites couldn’t be more different. Google has deemed this an important incoming link for seoinc.com, regardless. You think you know the algorithm, but you don’t. You never know when links will count.

Letกs not forget about the other search engines, though. Still a few steps behind Google, MSN places a lot of weight on incoming links. So does HotBot, Yahoo! and now, apparently, Become.com. This is just a handful of places that take a critical look at your link popularity. And I hate to say it kids, but I think thereกs a chance that MSN might slightly outdo Google this year. As of late, Iกve noticed different rankings on Google for clients based on where you’re searching from geographicallyspecific search results against our will. I haven’t spoken to one individual who likes this idea. This could be the giant mistake MSN has been waiting for Google to make, and you don’t want your perfectly Googleoptimized site to miss the MSN bus when itกs usage tops Googleกs.

This brings me to my last point which, quite frankly, is a nobrainer. The Internet is nothing but a massive network of links, hence กnetก. To turn your back on this is one of the hugest mistakes you can make on the web. The more links you have around the web, the more often your site will be seen. Itกs just like the real world, ‘thereกs no such thing as bad publicityก. Think of incoming links as cyberpublicity thereกs no such thing as a bad incoming link.

TEN Tips For Your Web Site Home Page

TEN Tips For Your Web Site Home Page

by: Radhika Venkata

1. Loading time:

try to be below 20kb
less number of images
specify height and width of images
Html with out erros
WYSIWYG editors load up your html code. so try using text editor part of your html editors instead of visual editor

2. Images Only home page:
Say goodbye to images only home pages. Home pages with flash only introductions or only graphics don’t attain good ranking in search engines.
3. Content:
Put content that related to your products or a list of your products with some text under them. Don’t forget to sprinkle some keywords in that text.
4. Links to your Products:
Make it Easy for your visitor to reach your product pages. Afterall your purpose of setting up a web site is to do few sales. Right? On each page you can use same navigational menu. So your visitor can reach any page on your web site with two clicks.
5. Headings and subheadings:
Highlight your product benefits or services. Put your content as short paragraphs. Beleive it or not, if the matter is like short paragraphs anybody can read whole page instead of a half page singe paragraph.
6. Promotions and sales:
If you are offering any promotional methods on your products like free upgrades for limited time or reduction of price to half for limited time etc, state them bold on your home page. This may make your visitor click on your link and check out your product.
7. Links to Outside domain:
As a rule of thumb, don’t put links to other domains from your homepage, unless those are also yours. If you are participating in link exchanges then create seperate folder for link exchanges like yourdomain.com/linkpartners/index.html
8. Popups on Your home page:
Personally I never liked them before and even I don’t advice to put pop ups on your web sites. If you do a search on Overture, there are more searches for the term popup blockers. So you decide yourself.
These are first 4 terms (148790 pop up blocker,65195 blocker free pop up,53141 pop up stopper, 47157 pop up blockers)
If you still love pop ups go for floatingbox that keep a small box that floads at the cornet of your home page.
More here: http://www.webmasterscentral.com/t/floatingads.shtml
9. Home page ranking:
Try to stick on to one url in link exchanges or ezine articles. When you do pageranking in Google, all these urls give different pageranking

yourdomain.com/
yourdomain.com.index.html
www.yourdomain.com/
www.yourdomain.com/index.html

10. Look little professional:
Little professionalism on your home page keeps your visitor few more seconds. And that few more seconds counts a lot to increase of your newsletter sign ups and sales. Little logo, your web site motto, same font, display of your products are only few to say.

Effective or Irritating: The Use of Pop Windows in

Effective or Irritating: The Use of Pop Windows in Internet Marketing

by: Nial Robbins

A few years ago, popup windows were all the rage in Internet marketing. It seemed that every time one opened a web page they would be bombarded with offers for this or that. It had gotten to the point where surfing the Internet was almost like playing a video game; when the ads would popup one would try and close them out before another one came. This is precisely why we have seen the decline in the use of popup windows on the Internet today; surfers simply do not even look at the popups anymore. They close the windows out before even reading the ad. Very often, a surfer will even leave your site if there are too many popup ads. They simply do not want the hassle of closing those windows while trying to obtain the information that your site has to offer. This information, while valuable, is not as valuable as the surfers time. Studies have shown however, that even with these set backs, popup windows are still an effective method of Internet marketing.

Is there some way that popup windows can be less irritating and still be effective? Yes! What if the pop ad were seen upon exiting your site instead of entering? This would allow the surfer to obtain the information that they need from your site, feeling that they were able to come and go quickly without being hassled by other ads and offers all the while making the surfer happy. You have left the surfer with a positive attitude and therefore are more likely to respond to the pop advertisement. This is being accomplished more and more by using what is being called popunder windows. When the surfer comes to your site, the ad is opened discretely behind the your web page. Then, upon leaving your site, after obtaining all the information that they need , will see the ad and therefore be more likely to respond. Since the surfer has the information, he has achieved his objective and is now open to do other things; ideally respond to the pop under advertisement.

Not all popwindows are created equally. There are some things that you can do to make your popwindows, whether popup or popunder more effective. The popwindow should be easy to ขescapeข from. If the surfer does not want to see the add, but has a hard time closing it out, they will likely become frustrated and could leave your site all together. You should either use a button to that will allow the surfer to close the window or be sure that the ขxข is easily visible. Another good idea is to use a script that utilizes cookies. Cookie will prevent popwindows from overloading the surfer since you can decide the frequency of the popwindows, rather than each time a page is opened. Also be sure that there is no more than one popwindow per page.

When creating a popwindow, you will be asked to fill out a short information form, select the length of cookies, and choose the layout of the popwindow. When choosing the design of the popwindow, you can increase the effectiveness by creating a large headline that includes benefits that will be most appealing to the customer. You should also consider using incentives and lastly do not ask the customer to read a long and drawn out advertisement. Keep the message simple yet powerful and your popads will be sure to generate profits for your site.

How PopCulture Collectibles Can Increase Your Onl

How PopCulture Collectibles Can Increase Your Online Auction Profits

by: David Espino

How Pop Culture collectibles can increase your Online Auction profits

With the increasingly competitive environment for products to sell in the online auction arena, sellers are getting more creative as to the items they purchase for resale.

While some of the Dutch Auction items that are frequently sold on eBay will always maintain their commodity status and always sell well, Pop Culture collectibles will usually generate a higher profitperitem simply because of a combination of two forces.

Scarcity and Desirability.

Pop Culture collectibles can run the gamut from a special early edition pair of Levis to a rare Coca Cola collectible.

However, when I discuss Pop Culture items in this article, I will limit the definition to only the types of collectibles that I’ve managed to have any experience with and that would be T.V., Movie and Toy collectibles.

Obviously, the category of Pop Culture collectibles is much bigger than this limited definition, but in the interests of keeping this a knowledgeable article, I will focus on the limited definition here.

One of my first experiences with Pop Culture collectibles was with a box of unused ‘the Fonzก posters that I found at an antiques swap meet a few years ago.

I came across this box at a seller’s stand. It had one poster taped to the outside of the box and the price tag on the box said $5 each.

I asked the seller กHow much are the posters?ก, not ever assuming that the price on the box was the current price.

The seller replied with ‘three bucks each.ก

Being new to eBay and wanting to experiment, I counted the posters, which were still in shrink wrap material. There were 25 posters in the box. The box looked like it had been loaded and unloaded too many times, but the posters were in perfect condition.

So I asked the seller, กHow much for the whole box?ก

He asked, กHow many are there?ก

I told him, ก25ก.

He said, กHow about $40 for the box?ก

I said, กO.K.ก, and handed him $40.

I posted an auction for one of the Fonz posters that week. It was a large photo of ‘the Fonz for Prezก, sort of a campaign poster with Fonzie in his traditional Leather jacket, thumbs up and a กSit on itก button on his jacket.

The auction was set to close on a Sunday, and when I checked it on Friday, it was up to $22 !

I was shocked and happy at the same time.

On Sunday, I took my family out to dinner and got home to see that the auction had closed at an astonishing $42.50 !

That experience was the one that cemented me in the area of Pop Culture collectibles!

I continued to sell the Fonz posters, one at a time (so as not to กflood the marketก) at prices from the $42.50 high to a low of $12.50.

My estimate for gross sales is somewhere around $450 for that box of posters.

This type of profit exists in the area of Pop Culture collectibles, but it does take some guts to seek out and กgambleก on these types of deals.

I had no idea what the posters were worth when I purchased them, but I had a good hunch, which proved to be correct.

Other Pop Culture deals I’ve made, most found at antique swap meets:

M.A.S.H. action figures purchased a box of 28 of them for $50, sold them individually for between $9.00 and $15.50

Star Wars Figures purchased a box of special limited edition figures for $120 at a regular swap meet, sold the box to a Star Wars dealer for $2,100.

Evel Knievel figure, mint in box, purchased for $10, sold for $115.

Alien 3 movie theater poster (massive, about 4’ tall by 12‘ wide), found at a yard sale for $10, sold on eBay for $50.

Bionic Woman action figure, mint in box, purchased for $30, sold for $85.

In each of these cases, I had no idea what the value was, I just went with my gut. But the fact that they were Pop Culture collectibles made it much easier to take that chance and buy the items.

Another solution many sellers use is to have their spouse at home, ready at the computer to do price research on unknown items!

Armed with a cell phone and a significant other at home doing research, your results will be less of a risk and more fun, too!

What Are Hover Ads?

What Are Hover Ads?

by: Tanner Larsson

Hover ads have been touted as the replacement and successor of those irritating and annoying pop up ads and it seems that the world have mixed feelings about this new advertising method. According to a popular Internet Marketing Dictionary, Hover advertising is a new method of displaying a message in a webpage. With the painful death of pop up ads, along comes the next generation of Internet advertising, the Hover ads.

What is a hover ad and what do they do?

The great big news is this – pop up killers that has been on a killing rampage since middle of 2004 or earlier cannot kill hover ads. You see, a pop up ad is a new web page that pops up whenever any page with popup codes embedded in them. Compare this to a hover ad. The hover ad is a kind of ad that hovers within the HTML page itself, so, the popup killer applications can’t get to them unless they kill the whole webpage….which isn’t exactly what the advertisers and media is looking for.

Pop up ads mainly use Javascript to load new popup windows while hover ads use DHTML (something like HTML – DHTML stands for Dynamic HTML).

Have you ever seen ads that sort of like floats around in a webpage and it won’t go away until you click on the little ‘x’ at the side of the advertisement to close the window? Those are hover ads. They just….well, hover within the webpage.

How does the hover ad work and why does it work?

Generally speaking, with hover ad codes embedded into a webpage, it does slow down the downloading of the page a little but let’s take www.auctionessentials.com as an example. Even if the downloading of the webpage is slowed down a little, an interested reader won’t mind the unobtrusive ad. Imaginative and creative minds have even put a new twist to hover ads. They can make the hover ads a little transparent too, so, even if the hover ad is on top of a portion of the page (or text), they won’t miss a thing because the ad is sort of transparent. Brilliant, won’t you agree?

How effective are hover ads in bringing traffic?

Not surprisingly, since hover ads are less irritating than popup ads, hover ads are more effective for branding, newsletter signups, announcements, advertising, and promotional campaigns. Because hover ads are not like flash ads that run away every time you try to close the ad, they are more ‘tolerable’ making exposure rates higher and more effective.

As one user and advertiser said, ขIf commercials on TV irritate you, does it make you stop watching TV altogether?ข The answer is a resounding NO. Internet marketers are flocking to this new technology and using hover ads as a way of getting their most important messages in front of their website visitors without annoying or irritating them.

PopUps Still Work. At Least For The Time Being

PopUps Still Work. At Least For The Time Being

by: Jason Blackston

Do you remember playing with the jackinthebox toy as a child? You knew that if you kept winding it up, eventually jack was going to burst out of the top and startle you!

Many of you found old jackinthebox an annoying toy and confined it to the toy box…..

Well, it reminds me of popups on the internet. Eventhough you know that when you get on the internet there is a good chance a popup will present itself, you always act surprised and somewhat violated.

But as irritating as they are, popups work. Most businesses are able to utilize pop ups for growing their list. This way they can market to you for years to come. Others actually make sales off of pop up offers.

Now, these days if you don’t want to deal with pop ups, you have the pop up blockers and stoppers. This pretty much remedies the situation if you don’t like multiple offers etc.

However, many people still don’t have any type of pop up blockers because they haven’t gotten around to purchasing it or because they actually want to view the pop up offers.

*Aggravating Pop Ups Mop Up!

With jackinthebox, jack always popped up. With pop ups, you can have multiple offers. Depending on the pop up software, you can have them pop up on entrance or on exit and even have them set on a time delay.

Plus, you can have them load on the front or behind the page. And even position them to the exact spot on the page where you desire.

**Remember when I said that pop up blockers and stoppers can pretty much be stopped these days?

Not so fast!!

Check out this article online at http://www.govisitors.com/jb/article4.html

After you get there youกll notice a pop up that flies onto the page.

Even if you have a pop up blocker set up on your computer, it shoudn’t stop it. You see, this pop up is built into the html page. This way when it loads, it does not open in a separate window. It is a part of the page and can not be stopped.

Maybe itกs sneaky, but it works….

The word on the street is that Pop Ups will soon be done away with. Believe me, this will not hurt my feelings in the least! They tend to annoy me also. However, until then, you can continue to reap the benefits of utilizing pop ups for your business!

Building A Mailing List

Building A Mailing List

by: Dirk Wagner

In most every business building a loyal client base is important to the overall success of your business. Internet marketing is no exception. In order to build your client list you need to capture email addresses from prospects that either sign up to receive your newsletter or buy a product or service from your website.
One of the most important elements of building your mailing list is that you build a trust relationship with your prospect. According to The National Sales Executive Association 80% of sales are made after the 5th contact with a potential client or customer. So this should tell you that you need to have quality content in your newsletter so the prospect will stick around to receive your newsletter past the 5th attempt. Another good thing about building your mailing list is that you can notify your prospects about up coming events or special offers you may be working on or know would be of interest to the prospect.
Let’s examine some of the different ways in which you may be able to build your mailing list.
Pop Up Ads
If you have surfed the web for anything you have undoubtedly found a site or two that use pop up ads to promote various ideas and opportunities. Most internet marketers use pop ups to capture prospects emails for there newsletters or promotions. Recently, a new type of pop up is being used, it’s called a pop over or hover ad that just appears on your site and will not be blocked by various pop up blockers that are installed in the google toolbar and the like.
These type of ads are very good for promoting your newsletter. The prospect signs up using there name and email address and are automatically add to your autoresponder.
Website Forms
If for whatever reason you do not want to use a pop up ad you can create a subscription form on your website that will accomplish the same purpose. Write up an ad that promotes your newsletter and the benefit to your prospect and give them the opportunity to sign up that way. Using subscription forms and pop ups are great if you have a lot of targeted traffic to your website.
Lead Services
Lead and subscription services offer you the opportunity to get a prospects name and email address. These are usually people looking to start a home business. You write an ad about your newsletter, advertise it with the subscription service and prospects sign up to receive it.
There are plenty of companies that offer these types of services for various amounts of money. You buy a certain amount of prospects each month and they get delivered to your autoresponder where you have your newsletter. I would suggest trying as many of these services as possible. It is to hard to say which company offers the best leads, so using multiple companies will at the very least build your mailing list.
EZine Ads
You may want to place ads in other peoples newsletters or ezines. Depending on the number of subscribers prices range from $10.00 to over $100.00. Once again you write an ad about the benefits of your newsletter and submit it to an ezine owner. You may be able to get your ad for free if you make a joint venture with an ezine owner and swap ads.
These are just some of the ways you can use to build up you mailing list. However, none of these methods will work unless you offer a newsletter with unique content that a potential client will want to read. Good luck!

DoItYourself Keyword Optimization

DoItYourself Keyword Optimization

by: Mario Sanchez

The first step in a search engine optimization campaign is to choose your keywords or keyphrases for each of your web pages. Keywords are the terms that search engine users type in the search box to conduct a query. The right keywords are those that:

clearly describe the purpose and content of your site, and,

allow your site to show up as close to the first results page as possible.

A good position doesn’t depend only on your choice of keywords. It also depends on how well do you position those keywords in your web page, and how many quality external pages link to you. However, choosing the wrong keywords can throw off your entire search engine optimization strategy, so you need to invest a few hours and make sure you do it right.

Letกs start with your homepage. Look at it carefully and write down the words and phrases that best define your site. Try to form two or three word phrases, since competition for oneword keyphrases is fierce, and it is virtually impossible to get a top position for them. That is why, from now on, we will talk about keyphrases, not keywords.

Once you have developed your list of potential keyphrases you are ready for the next step: to analyze the demand and supply for those keyphrases, and choose the best ones (those with good demand and not enough supply).

We will first check the demand for your selected keyphrases. For this, we will go to Overtureกs Search Term Suggesion Tool:

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Overture is a popular payperclick search engine (as we know, payperclick search engines are the only ones that disclose keyword poplularity for free). You will then type each of the keyphrases you selected, and see how many people search for those terms. This tool will show you only those searches conducted in Overture (and only in one month time). However, the relative popularity of each search term will be very similar in other search engines as well.

In addition to telling you if your selected keyphrases are popular, this tool will show you other keyphrases that you may not have thought about, which may even be more relevant to your site. For example, if your first keyphrase was กItalian Restaurantก, the Search Term Suggestion Tool will also display other popular search terms, like: กGourmet Italian Restaurantก, กNorthern Italian Restaurantก, กItalian Restaurant Pizzeriaก, กItalian Restaurant Miamiก, etc. You may also try other keyphrases, for example: กItalian Cuisineก, and come up with more specific keyphrases, like: กFine Italian Cuisineก, กItalian Cuisine Miamiก, กNorthern Italian Cuisineก, กItalian Cuisine Fine Diningก, กGourmet Italian Cuisineก, etc.

What you have done is to validate and enlarge your pool of popular, indemand, potential keyphrases for your web page.

The next step is to check the supply, or, in other words, to see how much competition there is for your selected keywords. Naturally, you want to focus on keyphrases where competition is less fierce. For example, chosing กItalian Restaurantก alone will certainly hurt you. There are so many of them that your chances of showing up in an advantagous position within the search results are pretty slim.

Having said that, get your list of keyphrases, go to Google ( http://www.google.com ) and typein each of them in the search box. Enter your keyphrases within quotation marks (to filterout less relevant results), and see how many results each individual query produces, making a note of those with a relatively small number of results (less competition). You will stick with the keyphrase that:

Best describes the topic and content of your page.

Is a popular search term according to Overtureกs Search Term Suggestion Tool.

Generates a relatively small number of results after performing the Google search.

If กGourmet Italian Restaurantก is the keyphrase that best meets these three criteria, it will become your primary keyphrase. To get even better results, you can choose a second keyphrase to make your page more relevant to an even more specific niche. For example, if your restaurant is in Miami, you can consider กMiamiก a second keyphrase.

Once you have chosen the keyphrases for you homepage, do the same for the other pages on your site.

You will then take your selected keyphrases and optimize your pages heavily for them. This involves placing them in strategic locations in the title, headings and body of each page.
