Ordering Commercial Printing For Your Company Can

Ordering Commercial Printing For Your Company Can Be Indimidating

by: Robert Kennedy

กI went to see a printer today to get my companyกs stationery printed. They ask too many questions, I can’t answer!ก I feel kinda dumb.

How many times have you felt this way? Itกs kind of like going to the auto garage for a tune up and being told you need a new 02 sensor, your syncro mesh gear has a tooth missing and so on. You know you have to get it done but who can you trust to give you the best quality, price and service. There is a reason why I include all three กquality, price and serviceก

In the 80กs and early 90กs it used to be กquality, price and serviceก…pick 2. These days, with the internet as a resource, buyers and sellers alike can truly benefit from forming bonding relationships with their print and design firm of choice. Location is no longer an issue. In fact, I will bet money you can always find what appears, to be better than what you are getting. It can be overwhelming and too much information, which may lead to a regretful purchase. Neither the buyer or the reputable seller desire this result.

Here are a few tips on what you should figure out before you talk to your printer:

1) Decide how many inks colors you are going to print in. Here are a few links that will help you understand this:

Pantone color chart in RGB and html; http://www.weprintcolor.com/pantone_RGB_convert.htm

Convert from RGB color to CMYK color;

http://www.weprintcolor.com/rgb_CMYK.htm

Explain CMYK, RGB and Pantone Color; http://www.weprintcolor.com/pop_ups/Templ_modificatons_full.htm

2) Have a pretty good idea of the paper and texture of the paper you would like to use. Learn some ‘buzz words’ in your conversions with the printers you speak to. Here is a list of printing terms commonly used by people in the printing industry;

http://www.reprotechprint.com/printing_terms.htm

3) Have a general idea of the quantities you would like to purchase. If you’re not sure don’t be afraid to ask your printer to provide a quotation on several different quantities. In printing, the more you order the cheaper the per unit cost is. Here are a couple of examples of this:

Business Cards;

http://www.weprintcolor.com/businesscardscolour.htm

Postcards;

http://www.weprintcolor.com/postcard_index_4x6.htm

4) Will you provide a ‘print ready’ digital file? When I say ‘print ready’, it is important that you understand this. Many printers will attempt to print from a ‘none print ready’ file. This will sometimes lead to undesirable results. Here is a couple of links to help you with this:

Free digital file inspection; http://www.weprintcolor.com/upload.htm

Specifications for sending files; http://www.weprintcolor.com/SendingFiles.htm

Once you have gathered education with the terms us printers use you will understand , more clearly, what you are getting for your money. You will also appear more educated in your future purchases. The moral of my story? Buyers need to be more armed with knowledge to make an educated purchase and sellers need to be sharp, knowledgeable and willing to share this knowledge…Everybody wins.

Book Printing Through the Millennium

Book Printing Through the Millennium

by: Paul Hood

Book printing might sound like a boring niche that doesn’t much over each turning year. That’s why you might find it surprising that like letters and the alphabet, book printing tells a far more astonishing story than what we usually know of.

There had been many developments that had great effect on book printing. The technology that spawned the making of records and preserving them was started by the Sumerians in the form of cuneiforms. Cuneiforms are an ancient wedgeshaped script used in Mesopotamia and Persia. Stone tablets would later give way to papers which would then be the main medium of the books as we know it today. Large volumes of books found a home in the Alexandria Library in Egypt during the reign of King Ptolemy I Soter. Ptolemy instructed his scouts to collect every possible book there is in the civilized world and bring them to the library for safekeeping. Original works were duplicated and was promptly returned to its rightful owner. Those returned were the duplicates of course. It would have been interesting to know how the owners reacted upon finding out that they were given mere copies of their books. Then again, we’ll never know. One thing’s for sure, arguing with a king is not good for your health.

Of all the events that transpired having an impact on the printed book, none have greater effect than the invention of the movable type. This process has been used by the Chinese as early as 1041 and in 1403, the earliest book was printed in Korea. Though similar in process, Johann Gutenberg’s invention would have a far greater contribution to the printed book as his movable type was able to print many copies of the same text quickly. Something the Chinese and Korean types failed to do. Gutenberg’s pioneering invention paved the way for later innovations and would serve as the spark for the success of future printers and publishers.

Today, printers can churn out thousands of books in record time. The invention of advanced printers capable of printing thousands of pages in a minute has made this a reality. Due credit is given to the pioneering spirit of early civilizations and of course Johann Gutenberg for making mass production of the printed book a possibility. This rich history has given us modern people the comfort of having books readily available.

Screen Printing Gets a Rival

Screen Printing Gets a Rival

by: Nash Ville

Before anything else, let’s have a brief description of the screen printing and heat transfer processes. Screen printing refers to the forcing of inks through a stencil that is in a mesh material. Heat transfer, on the other hand, is a method of applying an image in Tshirts, sweatshirts, jackets, hats, bags and more by releasing an ink, dye, toner, etc. from a special transfer paper via heat. Now, let’s move onwards…

According to the article ขScreen Printing vs. Heat Transferข by Bruce Roberts which was posted at www.bfprinting.com, the author has mentioned some pros and cons in using the screen printing and heat transfer methods to produce printed apparels. The article has stated that screen printing is advisable if you are planning to do mass production of Tshirts. He has added that digital heat transfer must be considered for printing short runs because it avoids the expense and extra work of preparing screens and cleaning up ink and chemicals. With financial considerations, much money is needed in screen printing than in heat transfer if you want to set up a business. The screen printing process was also explained in Roberts’ article.

Advantages and Limitations of Screen Printing

Screen printing is suitable for most projects which will be exposed to outdoor elements because of its inks that can last outdoors up to seven years against fading. Its other advantages include larger or smaller design format, use of half tones and blends, versatility and adaptability, great design reproduction capabilities, being good with fine detail, being economical on larger orders, and being permanent when applied properly. So, if you need printing on ridged materials like wood, glass, plastics, etc., it is absolutely the perfect choice for durability and value. However, it doesn’t work well on coarse textured substrates.

Advantages and Limitations of Heat Transfer

The heat transfer process offers unlimited print color combinations, photographic quality reproductions, and the versatility to print small quantities with multicolor designs. It also allows an opportunity to have small quantities of shirts made with colorful designs at affordable prices. Moreover, heat transfer printed shirts are fully washable and can be ironed after a wash while screenprinted shirts cannot be ironed. However, this process doesn’t work properly on dark shirts.

There you have it, folks! With this information on screen printing and heat transfer, the choice is still left for you to decide on which process best suits you. I agree that both methods of printing can be truly fun and rewarding but then, there will always be one that will stand out from among these two. What do you think, is it screen printing or heat transfer?

Varnish Your Printing and create New Dimensions

Varnish Your Printing and create New Dimensions

Offset Printing Varnishing techniques

Think for a moment. Is there a particular brochure or printed piece that stands out in your memory? Can you recall what feature or features have kept it with you!

Could it be graphic design? Photo placement? Typography or layout? Unusual format or innovative printing affects?

Learn the many techniques for incorporating varnish into your next printed piece. Varnished continues to be a great way of protecting and enhancing printed matter, but many graphic designers miss this in the element of design.

So you have that special promotion you are working on. It really needs to ‘stand out from the crowd’! One of the easiest and effective ways is to do it with varnish! You don’t get a second chance to make of first impression.

What is varnish?

Varnish is a variation of printing ink. It can be clear or tinted, glossy or dull, and it performs on a printing press as normal ink.

>From the production viewpoint, varnish is a sealer that overprints ink and paper helping to protect the finished printed piece from being scratched and scuffed. From a design viewpoint, dull varnish is sometimes used to reduce glare on glossy paper and thus increases readability.

For design effects, gloss and dull varnishes are used independently or in combinations. They can make a sheet glisten or make it appear smooth and shiny. Try spot varnish to add an enhanced appearance to photography, increase vibrancy of colors, or add interest and clarity to charts and diagrams.

Independent varnishes can run ขin the backgroundข and will attract the reader, in a very subtle manner to their presence.

Varnish does not always need to be combined with conventional printing inks. Varnish is interesting and appealing when used on its own. To create a tinted appearance you can add a small percentage of ink to varnish. This will print with a tinted transparent look that cannot be easily duplicated adding a dimension that is simply not achievable and any other way.

What are your options?

Ink, paper type and type of varnish (Matte or gloss, tinted or nontinted) must all be considered when deciding on the varnish effect you are trying to achieve. Sales, design and production staff should discuss these projects in the estimating/ production planning stage to ensure desired results are printed.

For most printed matter where varnish is being applied coated (glossy) paper is your best choice. Uncoated papers tend to absorb more of the effect and have a rougher surface.

Whether you use gloss varnish, dull varnish, tinted varnish or play one off against the other your viewers will enjoy the uniqueness of the design and print. Your printed piece will be remembered by a higher percentage of you audience and in some cases kept just as a collectors item.

I have been in the printing industry for many years. In 1986 I read many of the varnishing techniques that I employ in catalogue sent by one of our paper suppliers, entitled ‘Varnish Techniques’ by SD Warren Company. I have kept this catalogue and used it as a tool to help illustrate the finished results of various varnishing techniques. Yes, this catalogue is varnished. It is 2005 now, and I have decided to scan the actual pages that demonstrate and explain varnishing techniques used by commercial printers today.

Picturesque Framework of Large Format Posters

Picturesque Framework of Large Format Posters

by: Maricon Williams

Pictures influence us. It can frighten us. It can appease us. It can make us happy. It can make us blue. Excited, angry, anxious, perplexed, ecstatic – name it, pictures can very well work its magic spell on us.

Life is ironic and this irony can be reflected in the picture right before you. Take a glimpse and be amused by the things that it is telling you. Its voice may be inaudible but its language is clear. They say that picture paints a thousand words. And its words are so enchanting that it drags you to contemplation. If eyes have been regarded as the windows to our soul then, pictures are the mirrors to our past and the doors to our future. Why are they interrelated? Perhaps, the reason is that we must look back at them in order to see what’s ahead.

We cherish our pictures and we want to preserve every bit of it because every bit is a piece of the puzzle that makes us up. Pictures are our priceless possession. They are the trails of our past. Every picture may mean a precious moment, event or treasured person.

How powerful are pictures? Pictures are everywhere. We see them everyday. In fact, they are widely used to advertise and market since they give an air of ‘personal and human touch’. Some of the powerful ads that use pictures are billboards, labels, stickers and posters. By these materials, the essence of pictures are captured and preserved. Their lasting effects are resorted to make a product, service or event popular and marketable.

Posters, for one, have revolutionized the advertising and promotion process. A new addition to the growing poster printing business is the large format poster printing. This process made production of digital graphics readily available. Full color large format poster printing services allow the use of selfadhesive vinyl and PVC mesh to be the canvass of a gigantic poster that can cover the entire façade of a building. This type of poster is also an ideal solution for trade show poster printing services needs.

Large format poster printing uses modern digital presses to deliver quality, vivid, durable and excellent poster pictures and graphics at a reasonable price. Aside from paper, PVC and vinyl, board, static cling and heavy card stock can also be used.

If you want to tear in a picture a part of reality, have it printed in an exceptional way the way large format poster printing is doing!

Digital Printing Press: An Update

Digital Printing Press: An Update

by: Marlon D. Ludovice

Way back in 1998, the digital printing world refined its processes and made significant production operating cost reductions, as well as introduced various new equipment and technology in printing. This revolutionary trend is expected to accelerate as the industry moves in the coming years.

Digital printing progress is being made in both the fixedimaging onpress plate making approach, as well as the directtopaper technology (plateless variable imaging) alike. The popular กI can do it better, faster and cheaper than you can,ก was the battle cry of Indigo, Xeikon, IBM, Xerox and Agfa, as the variable imaging digital color printing press pioneers intensified their maneuvering for market share. A good sign of variable digital color printingกs expanding reach into the traditional print market is the press dealerships.

The association of new models and the noticeable modifications on existing modern machineries opens a better and less expensive production performance which will provide a better service to the general customers. All moving at the direction where cost of digital variable printing has declined considerably. And a decline in cost is enlarging the market.

Xeikon one of the leading provider of hitech digital printing services recently announced strategic partnership with Varis which is expected to result in sophisticated fullcolor digital printing software becoming available early this year. Indigo has announced two new press configurations, one at each end of the cost and performance spectrum.

Today with highspeed color copiers are beginning to look more like lowend variable imaging digital printing presses. Xerox has split its DocuColor 40 copier/printer line into two basic versionsthe 40 CP and the 40PRO. The 40CP is a network connected copier/ printer equipped with a digital controlled from EFI. Itกs suitable for walkup copying as well as lowvolume network printing. The 40PRO is intended for sophisticated color document production, which emphasizes speed and color quality.

As printers look at reequipping their plants for the 21st century, difficult choices between conventional and an emerging digital press must be made. A mistake can put a firmกs survival at risk, but failure to reequip to meet client expectations will almost certainly be fatal. Knowing when to harness available pressroom technology has become printing managementกs most difficult task.

Digital press development is proceeding at an accelerating pace for both fixed image and fully variable imaging presses. Fixed image developments are being led by directtoplatemaking onpress technologies. Fullcolor, 100 percent variable capability presses are entering the production mainstream as their operating costs decline, while output quality improves and the presses become wider and faster.

AntiAliasing for GreatLooking Text Graphics

AntiAliasing for GreatLooking Text Graphics

by: Grannyกs Mettle

Macromedia has a wonderful software application that helps users create greatlooking text graphics by using antialiasing capabilities. In Fireworks MX 2004, artists and designers can create readable and attractive text graphics by substituting shades of the font color around the lines and curves, which otherwise can be broken and craggy in appearance.

Fireworks AntiAliasing Capabilities

Antialiasing capabilities have been with Fireworks for quite some time now. With the new edition, Fireworks MX 2004 enhanced further its four antialiasing options and added two more features.

Its antialiasing options include: None AntiAlias, which disables text smoothing; Crisp AntiAlias that allows the creation of a sharp transition between the edges of the text and the background; Strong AntiAlias for a very abrupt transition of the text edges into the background, while preserving the shapes of the text characters and improving on the detailed areas of the characters; and Smooth AntiAlias that lets the users create a soft transition between the text edges and the background.

On the other hand, the new antialias options are the System AntiAlias that uses the text smoothing method which can be found in Windows XP or Mac OS X; and Custom AntiAlias, which provides expert level controls (such as oversampling, sharpness, and strength) over the antialiasing.

The enhanced features from Fireworks allow the users to have a complete toolbox of กsandpaperก for antialiasing of text graphics. Users can quickly and efficiently smooth the edges of any working text using the Fireworks application.

To utilize the antialiasing options, simply apply any text object through the Property inspector ot the Text Editor.

AntiAliasing Options

To help you further maximize the capabilities of Fireworks and its antialiasing features, the following is suggested:

1. For antialiasing to be useful and maximized, it is best to use it on larger font sizes.

2. Do not apply antialiasing features on a bitmapped font.

3. Do not export antialiased text as a GIF with the Web 216 palette. The reason for this is that the Web 216 palette does not have the colors that you will be using to properly antialias your text.

4. Antialiased text which is exported as a transparent GIF then placed in a web page with a background color will appear more aliased. This means that the text would appear to have jagged distortions in its curves and diagonal lines. It is better to just alias the text at the beginning since you will have the same result anyway.

And,

5. Always try one of the preset antialiasing options first before developing your final output. This is to help you achieve your desired appearance. Try out the Non, Crisp, Strong, Smooth or System options. If you still do not achieve your desired requirements, then use the Custom AntiAliasing option.

Guidelines for Printing Great Photos at Home

Guidelines for Printing Great Photos at Home

by: Kelly Paal

So you have this great digital camera and you’ve taken lots of great photos. Now what? Well you could go to a store and have them print your images for you, but isn’t that what you did with film? The point of all this great digital technology is that you can print your own photos at home without having to pay someone else to do it. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. It’ll seem like a lot of money at first but spend the money to get a good printer. Six color at least. Ink jets are wonderful for printing snapshots. You won’t need more than that. Also look around at the computer brands that sell computer packages for digital printing, the printer that they recommend is perfect for printing photos at home.

2. Buy some photo editing software. There are lots of brands out there many of them for pros but you can easily find software under one hundred dollars that will have lots more options than you will ever use. Look for software that has automatic settings so that the computer can automatically color correct, auto focus, brighten, or darken, etc. At least until you learn number 3.

3. Learn your equipment. Take the time play with the settings. Don’t try to print perfect photos right away. Most people with a little time and practice can learn to do basic photo special effects. Give yourself the time to learn.

4. There is one place that you are going to have to spend some money and it’s on paper. You can have a great image but unfortunately you cannot skimp on paper. Get the nice thick glossy paper, it’s worth it. I’ve tried the cheaper paper, which is good for test prints, but you need the high quality stuff for good prints.

5. DPI, dots per inch. Depending on your printer and your software you may be able to print up to 1200 dpi which is probably unnecessary for what you’re doing. For up to a 4 by 6 inch print you only need about 300 dpi. Most people cannot see the difference between a 300 dpi an a 600 dpi at 4 by 6 inches. For 5 by 7 or 8 by 10 you can go up to 600 dpi.

These steps will help you on your way to printing great digital photos at home. Remember though make sure that you have fun printing all those memories.

FYI Just so that you have a frame of reference, I’m a professional photographer and I have a six color ink jet that I paid less than $300 for and photo editing software that I paid less than $100. I print my 5 by 7 images for shows at 600 dpi.
