Testing PayPerClick To Build A Subscriber List F

Testing PayPerClick To Build A Subscriber List Fast

by: Tom Beal

Every successful salesperson knows the value of owning a list of targeted potential customers. Itกs a strategy I used to break sales records and also taught in my sale training sessions.

Coming from ‘realก world selling into virtual world selling presented some unique challenges.

How does one build a list online?

Research revealed many successful marketers recommend using PayPerClick (PPC) search engines to quickly and effectively build your list.

Selecting targeted keyword to reach your ideal potential customer give PPC a distinct advantage over other list building methods.

I decided to put PPC list building method to the test. I choose to set up a advertising campaign at Google Adwords and the lesser known http://www.mpstrategiesfirm.com. The two companies can have your campaign up an running in a short time.

They display the ads differently. Google Adwords displays the ad on search engine results and mpstrategiesfirm.com uses contextual advertising showing the ads on keyword topic based pages within their network.

Every test needs an objective outcome to gauge the results. The objective of this test? Visitors sign up to receive a free health report from a new affiliate program I choose to promote.

The Test Results

Google Adwords

number of clicks 700

cost per click .23

total cost 161.00

MPStrategiesfirm.com

number of clicks 800

cost per click .20

total cost 160.00

Even though they used different methods to display the ad, both produced excellent traffic results for the investment.

Sending traffic was only one factor of the objective. Remember the ultimate goal is to gain subscribers to build the list.

Here is where PPC marketing provided a valuable lesson in online marketing.

1,500 people clicked for the free report, but only 89 put in their name and email address. I receive 53 subscribers from mpstrategiesfirm.com and 36 from Google. Surprisingly

LowCost Marketing With Postcards

LowCost Marketing With Postcards

by: Bob Leduc

Hereกs a simple way you can generate lots of sales leads …or traffic to your web site. Use postcards. They’re highly effective and very lowcost. Plus, postcards provide the following 6 unique advantages over most other types of advertising.

1. Maximum Exposure for Your Sales Message

Postcards are delivered ‘ready to readก. Even people who usually ignore other advertising will find it hard to avoid looking at your message when itกs on a postcard …especially if you keep it brief.

With other types of advertising you often lose prospects who would have been interested in your offer …but they never saw it.

2. Simple and LowCost

Postcards are simple to produce and very lowcost. You can print 4 x 6 inch postcards on your own computer for less than 2 cents each. Or you can reduce the cost down to about 1 cent each if you print 4 at a time on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of card stock and cut the sheets into quarters.

Even postcards printed by a commercial printer are not expensive …usually about 4 cents to 8 cents each.

The postage for mailing postcards is low too. In the US you can send postcards by First Class Mail for only 23 cents. This reduced postage rate applies to postcards that are at least 3 1/2 x 5 inches but not over 4 1/4 x 6 inches.

3. Get Immediate Results

Because postcards are simple and easy to use they produce results quickly. Often your postcards can be mailed within a week from the time you decide to use them. You will start getting replies 2 or 3 days later.

4. Gain Control of Your Sales Activity

Postcards put you in control your sales activity. You can avoid getting too many or too few responses during any time period by regulating how many postcards you mail and how often you mail them.

That means you can quickly boost your sales activity anytime it slows down. And you can avoid losing customers you can’t handle immediately because you got flooded with too much activity at one time.

5. No Wasted Advertising Expense

Postcards enable you to spend your entire advertising budget on your best prospects. You don’t have to pay for advertising to a large audience in order to reach a few good prospects.

With a little advance planning you can make sure your postcards only go to prospects likely to be interested in what you offer …and who also have a prior history of acting on offers that interest them.

For example, analyze your customers and make a list of the characteristics they share. Then call several national mailing list brokers and tell them what you are looking for. Youกll be surprised at how specific some mailing lists are today.

6. Can Evaluate Results Quickly

Postcards normally generate 90 percent or more of their total number of replies within 7 to 10 days. This enables you to quickly and accurately evaluate the results of postcard advertising. Youกll know in about a week if you can confidently send more of the same postcards or if you need to make some changes.

Don’t overlook postcards when you want to generate sales leads or web site traffic. They’re highly effective, very lowcost …and they provide these 6 unique advantages you cannot get with most other types of advertising.

One click from answer ?

One click from answer ?

by: Greg Keins

This article briefly describes most popular places on the net where help, advise and answers on required questions can be found. Overview of Search engines, meta search engines, forums, online help boards and more.

1. Search engines

Google.com, yahoo.com they represents one of best known search engines. SEs holds huge databases, for example google currently have more than 3 milliards records, to be able to process this information quantities server farms are used with thousands of computers. Search results contain pages where lookup words were met. Every SE has its own algorithm on what pages best much search criteria but all of them have aim to show most relevant results for user.

SE weighty advantage is that search industry leaders have their databases filled by milliards of records referencing existing web sites on the net, but they require from user to know most part of answer and some search experience to be able to type in correct keywords, otherwise as usually happens with novice users keywords may be really sensible for required lookup, turned out to be not that really used by most internet community in current field. As consequence search results are far from ideal, usually this are sites similar to lookingfor but not that really useful.

Only experience coming with time and hope on search engines will be more intellectual in future seems help. Another way is to spend more time on lookup and parse most of search results (more than first page of results) this will for sure move near to success.

Also exists meta search engines (they don’t have own databases but reuse and combine existing top search engines results together), they provide more optimized results and keep only most relative matches.

Hear is list of most popular search and meta search engines:

Search engines by popularity:

http://google.com

http://search.Yahoo.com

http://search.msn.com

http://excite.com

http://netscape.com

http://iwon.com

http://askjeewes.com

http://mywebsearch.com

http://altavista.com

http://dogpile.com

http://infospace.com

Meta Search engines:

http://ez2www.com

http://kartoo.com

http://surfwax.com

http://vivisimo.com

http://webcrawler.com

2. Forum boards

This is for sure more humanized type of information conception. Any forum board divided into several subjects, where forum users can post questions. Any single question with follow up and answers called thread. Threads keep single post history.

Person looking for help posts message describing problem and usually within one day some body with god will helps. Most forums have possibility to turn on auto notification for new responses, posted by email. Once posted your issue in few or more forums, checking newly email messages will keep up to date with problem resolving. Good sign for forum is number of messages per unique thread, more than 100 is good, as more visitors will see your request as soon you will get required help.

Hear is few popular help forums:

http://www.htmlforums.com

http://www.wordforums.com

http://www.suggestafix.com

3. News groups

News groups is coming from that early times when internet was not worldwide available.

They were available mostly through bulletin board systems and terminal connections.

Now this is forum type help resource but advantage is there are a lot of news groups on many subjects and all messages archived since at least 1994 year. So there is pretty much chances that you will find already existed same problem with few possible solutions.

There are few web interfaces to news groups, most handy for me was Google:

http://groups.google.com

4. Documentation

Every product, service or tool coming with user manual and documentation.

This was always best and most smart way to get issues resolved but major problem is time required to get acquainted with often tens or even hundred manual pages. Not rare cases when person just missing so much time.

5. Online help chat

This is so called human 2 human service. Most major web portals support this type of service for its own needs, example is ebay auction. Any answers get resolved immediately via online chat by ebay support person. Only problem is that ebay works only with its registered users and support only ebay concerning issues.

Online help is best possible service for present day, it reduces lookup efforts from hours or even days to minutes. For today I found one such place and meet there good and prompt support

http://webhelpboard.com

Conclusion

From described above seen that guaranteed direction is original manuals that usually foresee most common issues and pitfalls but it is for sure require enough free time. From the other side human 2 human services online help chat is easiest and most prompt service existing today.

Rethinking Linking Link Exchange Back to Basics

Rethinking Linking Link Exchange Back to Basics

by: Kai Virihaur

In the old days of the internet, links were the primary communication path between web sites. Search engines were not as sophisticated as today, and search results rather crude. Actually, even today links are reported to be more used than search engine results; but the latter are increasing their share.

In a way, this began to change when Google entered the scene. In an effort to make search results more relevant, Google implemented an algoritm that judged the quality of a web site by the number of other sites linking to it. It seemed rather obvious that a popular, much linkedto, site should be of higher relevance than a site with few links pointing to it.

Unfortunately, as webmasters realized this a frantic stampede began. Everybody did whatever they could to secure as many incoming links as possible. One example: In my own field, web hosting reviews, there is a site that has (according to Yahoo) 4,000,000 incoming links pointing to it! Yes, FOUR MILLION links! By comparison, Microsoft.com has only about 3,000,000 incoming links!

I won’t speculate on just how those 4,000,000 links were collected, but surely it can’t have been by manually asking those 4,000,000 webmasters for a link exchange! And I also doubt that the 4,000,000 webmasters just spontaneously thought กWow, I will put up a link to this cool web hosting review siteก! Yes, even cooler than Microsoft.com, evidently.

As we all know now, Google got tired of having its search results manipulated in this way. So they tweaked their ranking algoritms (one tweak widely known as the dreaded กFlorida Updateก), to put an end to these methods. They started actively punishing web sites that were caught using devices such as กFree For Allก link exchange sites, and implemented many other measures also; too many to mention here.

So, getting many inbound links is a dead concept now? That is what some people claim, but they are wrong! What IS dead is the idea that links are nothing but search engine food. Rather, we are getting back in the direction of the good olก days, when links were not there just to bait the search bots. Some folks may have forgotten that links really are there to serve as paths of communication for Real People. Inbound links to a web site means paths for humans to enter, and browse the content. And that is what all of us webmasters want: VISITORS!

This also means: stop trying to manipulate search engines. Keep your directory of links, if it does provide some real value to visitors. But if those links are just a messy jumble, hidden somewhere in a dusty corner of your site repent! Get those links out of the closet, let them breathe some fresh air!

Is New MSN Search More Precise? Just Ask Google.

Is New MSN Search More Precise? Just Ask Google.

by: Lisa Melvin

MSN finally unleashed its new search technology to the world on Monday. The official announcement coming from Bill Gates introduced the New MSN Search engine, ending with a personal invitation to visit www.msn.com and ขtype in your question.ข

Here at WebAdvantage.net, we consider ourselves to be veteran internet searchers, often able to easily find the information we’re after. Considering we spend all day every day online, we should be. Even so, we rarely venture to type search queries in the form of questions on search engines, except for the handful of times we visit AskJeeves.

The thought of being invited to type in a question at MSNกs new search engine intrigued us. We decided to follow the trail of links to learn more about what they were offering. We were, at first, impressed with the pages singing the praises of the new "more precise, more powerful" MSN Search service. We were impressed, that is, until around page five of the "learn more" series of MSNกs site pages. Thatกs when we started to get tired of clicking "next."

Turns out there were ten pages devoted to learning more about what MSN Search offers (which perhaps could have been explained less painfully). But at WebAdvantage.net, we’re dedicated online marketing professionals, so we hung in there.

We were informed that MSNกs search results would now be drawn from their encyclopedia, MSN Encarta, enabling it to function effectively as a reference tool for finding things like definitions, conversions, geographic capitals and historical events. And that it could also now perform news and image searches and would draw music related results from its own MSN Music, placing artist information and sample song clips at the top of any music related search results.

MSN was also offering search functions for your own desktop or Outlook email (if you’re so inclined to download those). Throughout the "learn more" pages, they gave search examples. The first search examples given were in the form of questions; questions with specific answers like "Who is LeBron James?" and "What is the mass of Jupiter?"

MSN Search, they said, would give you more control over your searches, with filters to refine and a "near me" button to instantly localize results. Sounded good and well, but we were still more intrigued with that initial invitation to "visit and type in your question."

So we tried it. We visited MSN Search and decided to use one of their examples, typing in the question, "What is the mass of Jupiter?" To our shock and pleasure, there it wasan answer, right at the top and separated from the actual web results. It said, "Answer: Jupiter: mass: 318 Earth Masses."

Inquisitive and competitive by nature, we wondered what would happen if we typed in the very same question at Google. So we asked Google, "What is the mass of Jupiter?" Amazingly enough, Google spat out an answer right at the top of their results page as well. But Googleกs answer was, "mass of Jupiter = 8987 × 10 to the 27th power kilograms." Now, we’re Internet marketing experts, not rocket scientists, but it appeared that Google actually provided the more precise answer.

Good humored sports that we are, we went promptly back to MSN Search to give it another try. Since their first result at least taught us that Jupiterกs mass is 318 times that of the Earthกs mass, we typed in the next logical question, "What is the mass of the Earth?," thinking that we could then arrive at our own conclusion by multiplying that answer by 318 to arrive at the answer Google had already provided.

Unfortunately, MSNกs answer to "What is the mass of the Earth?" was "Answer: World: mass: 1 Earth masses"

Youกd think that the folks over at MSN would have tested their examples on MSN Search as well as testing the same queries on other major competitors before selecting them for the final cut. Well, maybe not.

We then spent the better part of the afternoon periodically asking MSN Search and Google questions to see how theyกd fare. If you’re ever bored, try asking them, "How hot is the sun?", "How many eggs are in a bakers dozen?" or "How far is it from New York to Utah?"

Hereกs what we learned from our afternoon of follies.

1. If you’re looking for encyclopediatype answers to questions like "What is a marsupial?" ask MSN Search (or visit encyclopedia.com or Britannica.com)

2. If you’re looking for a black and white photo of daisies, use MSN Search because the image search is nicely arranged and you can filter results by size as well as by color or black and white.

3. If you’re looking for results ขnear me,ข stick with Google’s automatically localized results by including the city and state in your query.

4. If you’re looking for the most precise answer, perhaps you should stick with Google (at least for now).

Google Tests Expanded Search To Include Printed Wo

Google Tests Expanded Search To Include Printed Works

by: Jakob Jelling

Google Labs is currently testing Google Print, which returns results from within scanned printed books along with Googleกs standard web search results. The searcher doesn’t have to do anything special the printed work results are already included in the Google database. Searchers have the option of narrowing their search by including, for example, the word กbookก in their search terms. For example, a search on กhome repairก might return a variety of web sites, online merchants, etc., while changing the search to กhome repair bookก will help filter the results to include more material scanned directly from books.

Publishers don’t want their entire books read online of course, so Google limits the number of pages a single user may read at any one time. A user can see the page where their search was found, plus they can go two pages forward and two pages backward from their original result page. Google provides links to merchants where the book can be purchased. Google earns no revenue from book purchases, but they do display their contextual advertising within the Google Print results, and they share this with participating publishers.

Once youกve found your search terms in a book, you can then enter additional search terms that will be limited to the book itself, rather than the entire web. Googleกs selection includes both fiction and nonfiction, technical reference and professional books, textbooks, and more.

Since Google Print is currently in testing, a searcher won’t necessarily find results from every book they expect to see. As the program grows, Google has indicated they will continue to add books to their searchable database. Publishers who want to participate can do so for free.

Local Search and Internet Yellow Pages A Whole N

Local Search and Internet Yellow Pages A Whole New Vocabulary for Small Business Sales

by: Dr. Lynella Grant

Buyers want both online and local information about where to buy. Most small businesses are local in nature, serving people who live nearby. Their customers found them through traditional methods like the Yellow Pages or newspaper ads. So far, the Internet hasn’t figured prominently in their marketing efforts.

Thatกs about to change, as Local Search methods become more widespread. Even for buyers expecting to spend their money close to home, more and more of them go to the Internet to locate desired products and services. They rely on search engines to find suitable vendors in the fastest, easiest way.

Local Search combines the search query word or phrase with specific geographic terms, like city or zip code. That way, search results only include enterprises in that local area. Instead of information about a small enterprise being lost among millions of pages of search results, it shows up in a small pool of local providers. Thatกs good for them, as well as the person looking for what they provide.

Small operations can easily be located by a whole new group of buyers Consumers don’t simply go to the Yellow Pages when ready to buy as they once did. Studies show that an astonishing 36% of online searches are conducted to find local businesses. About a quarter of all Internet users already conduct local searches. Theyกd do even more of it, if the desired small business data were more complete.

Local enterprises need to prepare for the impact of changing customer habits. An easy first step is to include your business in Internet Yellow Pages (IYP), along with the printed Yellow Page directory. That puts your enterprise on the radar screen. Learn how your business can make the most of Local Search by visiting http://www.yellowpagesage.com Youกll find reliable advice from experts in Yellow Pages and Local Search so you can get more mileage from your promotional dollars.

Start by getting comfortable with search concepts, and improve your odds of being found when people search online for what you offer. You don’t even need your own Web site to benefit from Internet Yellow Pages and Local Search.

Learn the Relevant Terms

Search Engine method for locating the information available on the Internet; a program that searches Web pages for requested keywords, then returns a list of documents where the query terms were found

Google and Yahoo, the major general search engines, have both shifted gears to make Local Search a priority when delivering relevant results.

Spider (also called กcrawlerก or กbotก) goes to every page on every Web site and reads the information so it can be available to searchers; to กcrawlก a site it collects and indexes information from it

Specialized Search Engines narrow focus of information crawled and indexed, like medical, business, or shopping sites

Keywords word or phrases used by search engines to locate relevant Web pages; words chosen to improve a siteกs search engine placement and ranking

Search Query search request, which the search engine compares to the spidered entries, then returns results to the searcher

Search Results compiled list of Web pages that a search engine delivers in response to a query; the number of items returned is usually overwhelming (in the millions), so searchers only bother to view results on the first pages

Relevant Results the test of a good search is whether the results obtained relate to what the person wanted to find, without a lot of irrelevant links

Local Search combining a geographic term in a search query to locate suitable providers in a specific area

Pay per Click (PPC) method of building traffic whereby site owners bid on search terms (keywords) that link to their site

Geographic Terms specific information about the local area that can be included in a local search: zip code, town, county, geographic region, state

Top Ranking sites shown on the first page(s) of search results

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) finetuning keywords and page content so the Web site rates high in search engine results

Tags and Titles (on Web Pages) provide site keywords and information to search engine spiders for indexing a site

Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) directory of business phone numbers and locations in a geographic area, organized by category; searchable data base accessed on the Internet

Make your business easy for searchers to find The public is embracing the convenience of searching on the Internet to find information about local businesses. However, their searches for desired information are compromised because so many local enterprises don’t show up in the databases as yet. Those that do have an edge in their local market. Climb aboard! Make sure searchers can find you. For little or no money, you can expose your enterprise to the whole world.

Whether or not your business has a Web site, you need to provide the information people are looking for in the places that they look for it. Local Search and Internet Yellow Pages open new avenues to buyers ready to spend. Best of all, they support and compliment your traditional methods of finding new business. So you cover all your bases.

Posturing Yourself As The Expert By Utilizing Goog

Posturing Yourself As The Expert By Utilizing Google Search

by: Jason Blackston

First, go to google and type กdan kennedyก into the search box. At the present time I get about 49,200 results!

Now, type in กjason blackstonก into the search box. Well, itกs quite a drop from the 49,200 results Dan Kennedy received. At only 123 results, Iกve got a ways to go to catch old Dan!

Nevertheless, the more articles that I submit to various ezines and the more websites that I have on the internet, my search results are going to continue to grow!

So what does this mean for you and me. Good question. You can establish credibility with potential clients by using the google search. Often times, people approach me wondering what I can offer them. What do I know? How can I help? The list goes on and on…

So what I tend to do, is send them to http://www.google.com and tell them to do a search for กjason blackstonก Theyกll find old articles, news, and websites. This allows them to gain a better perspective of who you are and what you can offer them.

9 out of 10 times, they’re impressed and want to learn more about me. This is great news and it generally leads to a positive relationship and potential sales.

And in the near future as your results continue to skyrocket, youกll see people bidding on your name like they do for people like กdan kennedyก!

Yes, thatกs another form of posturing that comes with this google search. When people type in your name and the results comes up with google adword results also, then people start thinking you’re the stuff!

But first things first. Just informing your list members, potential clients, and friends, about doing a google search of your กnameก, will enable you to posture yourself as the expert!

Google PageRank Explained

Google PageRank Explained

by: Tony Zhu

Google PageRank has always been a controvertial issue among us webmasters. There seems to be many questions floating around with suggests that many people are not familier with how PageRank works. Here, I will attempt to answer some of the common questions and discard the rumors.

1. What is PageRank?

Here is what Google says:

กPageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual pageกs value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves กimportantก weigh more heavily and help to make other pages กimportant.ก

In other words, PageRank is simply a mechanical algorithm by Google that attempts to evaluate the importance of your website larged based on the amount and quality of backlinks your website have. For the more intellectual crowds out there, check out The PageRank Citation Ranking: Bringing Order to the Web .

2. How do I check the PR of a webpage?

If you use Internet Explorer, download and install the Google Toolbar. There will be a green indicator on the toolbar that tells the PR of a particular page. Hovering your mouse over the ind icator will give you a numeric value of the PR. In addition, there are numerous tools out there that will check the PR of a page without the toolbar. If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can install the PageRank Checker extention.

3. Why do I want a higher PR?

It used to be believed that a higher PR value will give you a higher position in SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). However, this is no longer the case. As any experienced webmaster, and even Google themselves, would tell you, there are hundreds of factors that determine where your page is displayed in the results.

Google states that they do not recommend webmasters exchange links to increase their PR. They see it as trying to กgameก their search engine. Lastly, many people believe that a higher PR causes Googlebot to crawl through a page more often.

4. Is it a good idea to buy links for a higher PR?

Websites with higher PR (6, 7, 8) often make money by selling links to sites with lower PR. As Google states, if they are aware that sites are selling PR instead of just advertising space (how they can differ the two I can’t say or if, ind eed, they can), both the buyer and seller may be penalized. The penalty may take the form of a lower position in SERPs and/or a downgrade of PR. Thus, we recommend that you do not buy links simply for a higher PR.

5. But I still would like to improve the PR of my site. What should I do?

First of all, sites don’t have PR, pages do. (hence the name Page Rank) Therefore, it is possible for an internal page to have a higher PR than the homepage. In order to get PR, the only way is to get links to it. Incoming backlink from a page with a higher PR is more valuable than incoming a backlink from a page with a lower PR. In addition, the PageRank that a link กgivesก is spread out between the number of links on the page. For example, a backlink from a PR4 page with only two links on the page can be more valuable than a backlink from a PR7 page with fifty links on the page.

6. How many links would I need to get my homepage to PR7?

The answer to this question varies greatly between different sites. Sometimes a couple links from other PR7 or PR8 pages will do. On the other hand, you may need hundreds of backlinks from PR3 or PR4 pages.

7. Iกve acquired many backlinks to my site. Why isn’t my PR improving?

There are many reasons why you may not be seeing the results. First of all, if you see PR5 for a page, the real PR may be PR5.0000 to PR5.9999. You have no way of knowing the exact PR of your site. Thus, you are simply not seeing the results. Secondly, Google might have done a PR algorithm update. Lastly, the PR of the pages that are giving you incoming backlinks might have changes, thus changing your PR as well.

8. How often do PR change?

Results may vary (a week to six mont hs).

9. Why is my PR in the Google Directory different than my toolbar PR?

Google uses a different scale for measuring PageRank in the Google Directory.

10. Why is it so much harder to go from PR6 to PR7 than from PR5 to PR6?

Google Pa geRank value goes up logarithmically. (i.e. going from PR9 to PR10 may look like the same as going from PR1 to PR2, but is actually 1000 times more difficult). The exact logarithmic scale is unknown, but there has been speculation that it may be around 5. (i.e. going from PR2 to PR3 is 5 times more difficult than going from PR1 to PR2)

11. I just lost all my PR!

Don’t panic just yet! Check to see if your PR is whitebarred or greybarred (white or grey in the PR ind icator). If it is white barred, then your PR will probably come back. However, if your PR is greyed, then it means that Google saw your site as having used unethical SEO techniques (e.g. selling/buying PR, keyword stuffing). Also, Google sees http://example.com/abc.htm and http://www.example.com/abc.htm as two different pages. In this case, the PR of the page is spread between these two UR Ls.

12. If PR is virtually useless, then why is it so expensive to กbuyก?

Over the years there has been many misconcepts about PR. Sites with higher PR claim that PR is valueable so that they can make more money selling links. Gradually, the misconceptions quietly built up.

13. Whatกs up with the PageRank formula I see on the Net?

You may have seen a formula to determine PR. I cannot say that the formula is untrue, but itกs the implementation of the formula that is in question. Just remember, the Internet is NOT all about Pagerank!

How to Search your PC with Google Desktop

How to Search your PC with Google Desktop

by: Nowshade Kabir

In this era of Internet, most people are frequent users of computers. Many of us use computers through out the day, accumulating morasses of information in various formats, which include email, digital photo, word document, spreadsheet, presentation file, ebook, article, other downloaded files, music, visited web pages, and many others. We stuff them in multiple folders in our PC. Before we know it, our hard drives become a storeroom of misplaced items. As a result, finding a needed file of information some times become a daunting task!

The search function integrated to Microsoft Windows is not a big help either. It requires you to know, albeit vaguely, where the file could possibly be located. If your data storage is significant and you made a search on your whole hard disk, it might take ages to get search results and, then again, there is no guarantee that you will find the right file. Frustrating? Thanks to new Google Desktop Search this is about to change!

What is Google Desktop Search?

Google Desktop Search is a free downloadable small program, which will quickly and easily find your files no matter where in your hard disk they are stored. The great thing about this program is by making your computer searchable, this program frees you from having to manually organize and sort your files, emails, and downloads. You no more have to mull over where in your PC the information you are looking for is residing – in your email, files or web pages that you browsed recently.

At present Google Desktop Search works only with the full text in Outlook and Outlook Express email, text, HTML, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, AOL chat, and Web pages viewed through Internet Explorer. Other files like PDF will be probably added in future version.

How it works?

Google Desktop Search is fairly easy to download and set up. The address for downloading the program is http://desktop.google.com. Once you installed the program, it begins initial indexing process of your hard disks. This may take several hours for an average size disk. The onetime indexing process only works when the computer has been idle for more than thirty seconds. Indexing for Google Desktop Search is an ongoing process, new files and emails get updated automatically. The search index created by the program resides on your own computer.

On your system tray you will see a swirled icon in Google colors, by clicking on it you will open the regular Google search page with the addition of Desktop along side with other search areas. Once the indexing is done, files are searched in under a second and the results are impressively precise. The top bar shows quantities of files found under the four categories, which include emails, files, chat and Web history. The results are shown in much the same way as regular Google interface. You can choose to see relevant results from all or any of the categories. You can also sort results by relevance or by date. By clicking on any result you open the file in respective application software.

The email query results are the best! No longer have you had to remember in which folder you stored the email written to John in reference to Peter. By searching for Peter or John, you will find all relevant emails and related correspondence. You can read and answer to any of the discovered email from the thread. This really saves time when you need to follow up to a large numbers of emails each day.

There are two more text buttons next to the search field. One is Desktop Preferences and other is Remove Items. Desktop preferences allow you to choose the types of files you would like the program to include in its index out of available ones. You can also point out not to index specific folders from your hard disk. If you share your PC with others, it’s a good idea to eliminate your private folders from the Desktop index. You can also specify not to index certain websites from your cached web history as well. The Remove items button allow you to eliminate selected results from the index.

The advance search option allows you to search by phrase by putting the phrase within quotation marks, to eliminate a word from search by putting a minus sign in front of the word, to search by file type, and to search within a web URL. A neat feature is to integrate your desktop search with your web search. This is very handy if you have already done an extensive search for some information and after a few days doing search for similar information once again. Privacy question

By default, Google Desktop Search collects a limited amount of nonpersonal information from your computer and sends it to Google. This includes summary information, such as the number of searches you do and the time it takes for you to see your results, etc. You can opt out of sending this information during the installation process or from the Desktop preferences later. According to Google Privacy Policy no personally identifying information, such as your name or address, will be sent to Google without your explicit prior permission.

What is missing?

I bemoan not having PDF files in the search process as yet. I have dozens of ebooks and PDF whitepapers residing in my PC, and I really would prefer to have them indexed. That way, I’d have been able to read materials, when I needed them most.

The other thing I want to see is clustered result of my query, which shows organized search results into meaningful hierarchical folders similar to the way Vivisimo search engine works. This clustering is particularly helpful for desktop search, as this allows us to see other relevant documents connected to the searched word.

Conclusion

Due to Google’s immense popularity as a search engine, it’s logical that most users will prefer Google’s desktop search program as oppose to other similar programs, such as Copernic and Hotbot. Finally you can search your very own computer with similar ease and preciseness as you have been searching the Internet for quite some time.
