Any kid, and their grandmother too, can make a webpage. There are many กwysiwygก webpage design applications that let you create a webpage as easy as typing text. But only a few people can create a WEBSITE. The stumbling block is knowing how to link webpages together to form a website. I have seen many websites that consist of a single webpage about a mile long!

The first problem is that websites are contained in virtual directories. You know that your webpages can be found at yourdomain.com, but the actual path to yourdomain.com on the web server may be known only by the system administrator. And the system administrator can move your website to a different folder, or even a different computer, without changing its virtual address.

The second problem is that most people don’t know how to write a relative link. Relative links have the advantage that you don’t need to know the path to the webpage that you want to link to, you only need to know where it is ‘relativeก to the webpage containing the link.

Designing Your Directory Structure

The first step to implementing a website is to design the directory structure. Letกs design a directory structure for a simple download website. The website consists primarily of articles and digital material that visitors can download. You could just dump everything at the top level of the website. Good luck maintaining that website!

To keep the files organized, you need to create subdirectories (folders) on the website. Even though the website consists only of articles and digital downloads, you need five subdirectories, as described below.

You understand what the กarticlesก and กdownloadsก subdirectories are for, but what are the other three subdirectories for? Itกs standard practice to provide certain features on your website, as listed below.

Each of these features requires a webpage. Instead of dumping the webpages at the top level of the website, or mixing them in with articles or downloads, letกs put them together in a folder named กgeneralก (Iกm sure you can think of a better name).

All of your webpages use certain things in common, for example, your logo graphic. If your web server provides SSI (Server Side Includes) all your webpages can share a common header file and a common footer file. You might also define all your websiteกs styles in a common style sheet. Letกs put all of these files in a folder named กcommonก.

Your contact page might use an email form. If your server provides serverside scripts, you would place the email form script in a folder named กcgibinก. Cgibin stands for กCommon Gateway Interface Binaryก. Few people use CGI any more, and those that do don’t use binary files, but the folder name has stuck as a traditional place to store scripts. Almost all websites come with a preconfigured cgibin folder, and the website may be configured so that the cgibin folder is the only folder with rights to run scripts.

I would also recommend that you create certain subdirectories for some of the above mentioned directories. Most web pages contain images. You could dump all the images in the same folder with the webpages, but when you get more than about 50 files in a folder, it becomes difficult to maintain. You should create an กimagesก subdirectory in the articles, downloads, and general directories. The downloads directory should also have a กfilesก subdirectory to store the downloads.

This arangement of directories and subdirectories will provide good file organization for the example website. Understanding my reasoning for this directory structure should help you to design a directory structure for the website you have in mind.

Default Page Configuration

Every website has at least one default webpage configured (also called the กhomeก page). The default webpage is the webpage that is returned when the user enters or clicks on a link containing only the domain name, without a specific file name. On a Unix or Linux web server, the default webpage will usually be กindex.htmก. On a Windows web server (IIS), the default page will usually be กdefault.aspก.

The website administrator, or if your webhost provides the required กcontrol panelก feature, you can actually configure any page to be the default page. If your web server has more than one default page configured, I would recommend removing all but the default page that you intend to use.

Now, letกs assume that all of your webpages need to link to an image file named กlogo.gifก stored in the กcommonก folder. The relative link on your default webpage would be as shown below.

กcommon/logo.gifก

The website file manager interprets this as กlook in the folder named common for the file named logo.gifก.

However, the link on any webpage contained in one of the subdirectories would be as shown below.

ก../common/logo.gifก

The website file manager interprets this as กgo up one level, then look down in the folder named common for the file named logo.gifก.

This difference in the link may not be a problem unless you use SSI or ASP (Active Server Pages) to build your webpages from a common header file and a common footer file. Then you need a different link in the common file depending upon whether the page linked to the common file is the default webpage (where you would use common/filename) or a webpage contained in a subdirectory (where you would use ../common/filename). There are several ways to solve this problem.

1. If your website has a serverside scripting engine like ASP or PHP and you know how to program, you could implement code that selects the proper link.

2. You could use the complete path, including the domain name, on all pages. This will cause problems if you ever have to move your website to a different web host (Until all the dns servers across the planet have been updated).

3. You could put your home page in a subdirectory, for example กcommonก, and make your default page into a redirect to your home page. Then you would use ก../common/filenameก for all links. The following meta tag, placed the head section of your default webpage, will immediately redirect the users browser to your real home page.

In this article, I showed you how to design a directory structure for your website and how to create relative links to link all your webpages together to form a website. Website visitors don’t like to do a lot of scrolling, so try to keep your webpages to only two or three screens high. Please, no more websites that consist of only one mile long webpage!

The most popular method to build webpages today is to use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) software. Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver are prime examples of WYSIWYG software. Both programs allow you to create webpages as though you were creating a document with your favourite word processing software like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. Its as simple as entering paragraphs, headings and inserting clipart or images.

WYSIWYG software like those listed above are prefect for beginner webpage builders who want webpages constructed quickly without having to learn HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).

All webpages are brought to life using HTML codes, regardless what webpage building software is used. WYSIWYG programs simply create the HTML codes as you construct a webpage (in the background, without you knowing), so you don’t need to understand them.

This is without a doubt the biggest advantage over any other type of webpage building programs. It means that if you can press keys on a keyboard, you have what is required to create your very own webpage!

However, most WYSIWYG programs don’t give you absolute, total control over webpage design (ie, exactly the way you want the page to look). There are design limitations.

For example, you may want to place headings, sub headings and a navigation menu in a particular arrangement on the webpage, but no matter how many times you try, the program won’t permit such placement or position them correctly. This is one big disadvantage of WYSIWYG programs if you desire a custom look to all your webpages.

Knowledge of HTML, however, can assist you to overcome such design shortfalls in WYSIWYG programs. How is this possible? Let me explain.

If you understand HTML codes, then you understand why webpages appear the way they do in a web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. This is powerful stuff because the moment you change/modify HTML codes, the webpage will take on a new design/appearance.

And don’t forget that HTML codes are exact, giving you total freedom over how everything appears on the webpage. Most WYSIWYG programs allow you to view and modify the HTML codes. As you can see, knowledge of HTML is beneficial.

The downside to HTML is the learning curve. It takes time to understand how HTML works and why, but once you know, using HTML to create totally custom designed webpages is easy. For the beginner, HTML can be challenging, but don’t despair because there are HTML tutorials available that teach you basic and advanced HTML in a matter of days!

So the question is Should you bother learning HTML to build webpages? The answer yes and no.

It is obvious that WYSIWYG software speeds up production of webpage development regardless of your knowledge on how to build webpages. However, to further refine and tune your webpages exactly to your liking, it is usually necessary to add and modify HTML codes. So yes, HTML is worthwhile learning if you are unsatisfied with the webpages produced by WYSIWYG software.

There is little point learning HTML if you are 100% satisfied with the webpages made with WYSIWYG software.

One thing is certain. Using WYSIWYG software and learning HTML codes is the answer for those of us who want webpages made exactly to our requirements. Learning HTML is not as hard as you think. This tag is to be a winner. This is a primary spot to include our keywords for SE spiders, bots or crawlers (กspiderก hereafter). {title} tags are the best กdainty dishก for SE spiders. They eat them as cakes, so make title tags to be tasty for them, about 65 characters long.

Important Meta tag. Very often the description you put will be shown at the SE searching results. To my personal opinion they have more important marketing role of attracting visitors than actual optimization. The SEsก trust in กdescriptionก tag as well as our next กkeywordsก tag has been greatly discriminated due to fraud and unfair competition. Make it no more than 250 characters long, including, of course, your targeted keywords as well.

Another advisable to use Meta tag should be included with all your targeted and untargeted, but related to the topic, key phases separated by commas. Given that these tags determine the headers of your webpage from the SE spidersก viewpoint, try to include your targeted keywords in them.

กAltก is just a comment for every image you insert into the page. Use this knowledge at your advantage. Include your key phrases where possible and safe. By กsafeก I mean common sense, don’t input comment like กebook packageก into the image of the button that leads to your partner, say, กPizza orderingก website. On the contrary, if your website has graphical menu and buttons, it is very wise to include กaltก comments according to directions they lead to, i.e. กHomeก, กServicesก, กAbout Usก, กContactsก etc. If for any reason visitors have their browser with images turned off, they won’t see any menu if you haven’t inserted กaltก comments.

Content

Your informational coverage should be keyword/phrase rich, the same way as headers. In general the more relevant key phrases your textual information will contain, the better your chances of being ‘remarkedก by SE spider are.

HTML text format tags like bolding {b}, italic type {i} and underlining {u} may also have some weight in SEs placement.

Key word density and frequency are another indexes vastly used by SE to rank webpages. Don’t overuse them though.

Link popularity (page rank)

Another extremely important parameter for your listing position nowadays. In general the more links on third party websites point to your site the better. Although try to avoid กlink farmsก or other กclubsก the only aim of which is to artificially increase your link popularity. These tactics may simply result in penalization or banning of your website.

Link popularity without any doubt helps to increase the relevance of searched terms more often than it doesn’t, but makes SEO even more farreaching target, because establishing quality กincomingก links pointing to your site is beyond your direct power.

To be short, your task is to find websites that have highest SE listing positions and/or page rank (determined via Google Toolbar) and negotiate a link to your site in return for some service, product or solicit simple exchange of links. As you see these กmanualก work is the most timeconsuming, but it repays if you are focused to get as much relevant links as possible.

You may apply viral strategies by offering some free/paid service that implies putting a link back to your site.

Google has developed its own link popularity evaluation tool called Page Rank. It is calculated basing on consistently changing number rules: current rank of the site the link to your page is pointing from, its relevance to your website topic, presence of targeted words etc.

Fake tactics

They are what I call them and used by webmasters similar to ways some กmarketersก use spam to promote their businesses.

Unfortunately, usual internet users don’t have ability to กbanก spammers the same way SEs penalize those กsmartก webmasters. I don’t recommend you to use any of these tactics, even on someoneกs กadviceก.

They include excessive use of related and totally unrelated keywords, comment tags, hidden layers, text on the background of the same color, artificial link farms, numerous entry pages etc. This game simply won’t be worth candles if your website is banned for good.

robots.txt file

Very important file every website should have. It allows you to literally rule or direct SE spider to the กproperก places, explaining what and where should be scanned, not just blind waiting of your lucky day. With its help you can also protect your confidential webpages and or directories from scanning and showing at the SE searching results, very important feature many webmasters solve with ‘tonsก of Java or even Perl coding instead of one line string in the robots.txt file that will forbid to scan กdownloadก, socalled ‘thank youก pages or anything you want!

Design & Layout issues

Next point is to have a textual info. The simple declaration of content rich website is not enough, SEs need text to scan.

Clear to follow links. If you have Flash or Java applet navigation menu, make sure to duplicate somewhere and include HTML links as well. Most SE spiders cannot distinguish dynamically created webpages with the help of ASP, Perl, PHP or other languages. It is also clear that all webpages, access to which was forbidden (no matter how) by administrator, would also be left unnoticed. The same relates to HTML frame sites. What frames actually do is complicate the way website is being scanned, no more, no less. When I see website made of frames, it is like webmaster telling me: กI want lower SE position.ก

Having กsite mapก page with all link connections of your site not only does it help your potential visitors, but SEs as well.

All link names, inside your informational content, are to contain your related keywords or phrases, not just กclick hereก or กdownload hereก.

Avoid a lot of javascripts, cascade style sheet tags or a lot of image tags at the top of the page that could occupy more than a page of HTML source code with almost no textual info. If you have java or .css coding save them as separate files and upload on request, leaving one string of code in your HTML document only.
