Summer’s Internet Traffic Jam

Summer’s Internet Traffic Jam

by: Rob Young

Summer is finally here, and while for many, summer implies barbeques, schoolbreak, vacations and trips to the beach; for most Internet businesses, summer implies slower traffic.
For an online business, traffic is paramount. Without it, conversions drop off, ROI’s dwindle and businesses can fail. In the United States, netScore reported that seventyfour percent of the top 50 Internet properties experienced less traffic between May and June of 2001. A big reason for this huge reduction is the decrease in atschool Internet traffic. Visitor traffic from atschool computers, which represented almost 8% of U.S. Internet traffic in May, began declining as summer vacations started and decreased 40.5% in June compared to May. Traffic doesn’t see an increase until midAugust. This means that for nearly four months, online sites are not seeing the traffic they so desperately need.
International Web usage is seeing declines in the summer months as well. Between midMay and July of 2002, Russia reported a twentypercent decline in summer Internet usage. Sweden saw its summer traffic stifled by eighteenpercent as early as July 1999, and many other countries around the world are feeling the hit of summer traffic reductions as well.
Seasonal traffic fluctuations are a recent phenomenon. The first few years of Internet usage saw such rapid growth in both the number of users and the number of pages visited, that seasonal variations were hardly noticeable. In recent years, however, Internet growth rates have slowed dramatically as the United States and the rest of the world crawls towards the user saturation point.
While most sites see drastic reductions of traffic from May to August, certain summeroriented sites tend to be protected from the summer burn. May, June and July kick off the blockbuster movie season, drawing millions of visitors to Cinema sites. According to movietickets.com, traffic to their site rose 66% to 600,000 visitors and Twentieth Century Fox Film reported that web site traffic jumped 26% to 372,000 visitors. For the lucky few online Cinema sites, summer’s heat fires up traffic.
Weight loss and travel sites have also seen increased summer usage in the past as people try to slim down before venturing to the beach.
As noted above, Internet traffic regains strength beginning in midAugust. Ecommerce and apparel site usage increases dramatically with backtoschool sales, and by September, vacationing begins to decline and general Internet usage rises to normal levels.
The important thing to note for online businesses is that decreased traffic doesn’t necessarily have to mean decreased profits. Make the most out of summer Internet traffic and prepare your site for fall and winter traffic increases. Now is the perfect time to update and optimize your site.

Don’t Get Above Your Business

Don’t Get Above Your Business

by: Fernando Soave

Young men after they get through their business training, or apprenticeship, instead of pursuing their avocation and rising in their business, will often lie about doing nothing. They say, กI have learned my business, but I am not going to be a hireling; what is the object of learning my trade or profession, unless I establish myself?ก

กHave you capital to start with?ก

กNo, but I am going to have it.ก

กHow are you going to get it?ก

กI will tell you confidentially; I have a wealthy old aunt, and she will die pretty soon; but if she does not, I expect to find some rich old man who will lend me a few thousands to give me a start. If I only get the money to start with I will do well.ก

There is no greater mistake than when a young man believes he will succeed with borrowed money. Why? Because every manกs experience coincides with that of Mr. Astor, who said, กit was more difficult for him to accumulate his first thousand dollars, than all the succeeding millions that made up his colossal fortune.ก Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience. Give a boy twenty thousand dollars and put him in business, and the chances are that he will lose every dollar of it before he is a year older. Like buying a ticket in the lottery, and drawing a prize, it is กeasy come, easy go.ก He does not know the value of it; nothing is worth anything, unless it costs effort. Without selfdenial and economy, patience and perseverance, and commencing with capital which you have not earned, you are not sure to succeed in accumulating. Young men, instead of กwaiting for dead menกs shoes,ก should be up and doing, for there is no class of persons who are so unaccommodating in regard to dying as these rich old people, and it is fortunate for the expectant heirs that it is so. Nine out of ten of the rich men of our country today, started out in life as poor boys, with determined wills, industry, perseverance, economy and good habits. They went on gradually, made their own money and saved it; and this is the best way to acquire a fortune. Stephen Girard started life as a poor cabin boy, and died worth nine million dollars. A. T. Stewart was a poor Irish boy; and he paid taxes on a million and a half dollars of income, per year. John Jacob Astor was a poor farmer boy, and died worth twenty millions. Cornelius Vanderbilt began life rowing a boat from Staten Island to New York; he presented our government with a steamship worth a million of dollars, and died worth fifty millions. ‘there is no royal road to learning,ก says the proverb, and I may say it is equally true, ‘there is no royal road to wealth.ก But I think there is a royal road to both. The road to learning is a royal one; the road that enables the student to expand his intellect and add every day to his stock of knowledge, until, in the pleasant process of intellectual growth, he is able to solve the most profound problems, to count the stars, to analyze every atom of the globe, and to measure the firmamentthis is a regal highway, and it is the only road worth traveling.

So in regard to wealth. Go on in confidence, study the rules, and above all things, study human nature; for ‘the proper study of mankind is man,ก and you will find that while expanding the intellect and the muscles, your enlarged experience will enable you every day to accumulate more and more principal, which will increase itself by interest and otherwise, until you arrive at a state of independence. You will find, as a general thing, that the poor boys get rich and the rich boys get poor. For instance, a rich man at his decease, leaves a large estate to his family. His eldest sons, who have helped him earn his fortune, know by experience the value of money, and they take their inheritance and add to it. The separate portions of the young children are placed at interest, and the little fellows are patted on the head, and told a dozen times a day, กyou are rich; you will never have to work, you can always have whatever you wish, for you were born with a golden spoon in your mouth.ก The young heir soon finds out what that means; he has the finest dresses and playthings; he is crammed with sugar candies and almost กkilled with kindness,ก and he passes from school to school, petted and flattered. He becomes arrogant and selfconceited, abuses his teachers, and carries everything with a high hand. He knows nothing of the real value of money, having never earned any; but he knows all about the กgolden spoonก business. At college, he invites his poor fellowstudents to his room, where he กwines and dinesก them. He is cajoled and caressed, and called a glorious good fellow, because he is so lavish of his money. He gives his game suppers, drives his fast horses, invites his chums to fetes and parties, determined to have lots of กgood times.ก He spends the night in frolics and debauchery, and leads off his companions with the familiar song, กwe won’t go home till morning.ก He gets them to join him in pulling down signs, taking gates from their hinges and throwing them into back yards and horseponds. If the police arrest them, he knocks them down, is taken to the lockup, and joyfully foots the bills.

กAh! my boys,ก he cries, กwhat is the use of being rich, if you can’t enjoy yourself?ก

He might more truly say, กif you can’t make a fool of yourself;ก but he is กfast,ก hates slow things, and don’t กsee it.ก Young men loaded down with other peopleกs money are almost sure to lose all they inherit, and they acquire all sorts of bad habits which, in the majority of cases, ruin them in health, purse and character. In this country, one generation follows another, and the poor of today are rich in the next generation, or the third. Their experience leads them on, and they become rich, and they leave vast riches to their young children. These children, having been reared in luxury, are inexperienced and get poor; and after long experience another generation comes on and gathers up riches again in turn. And thus กhistory repeats itself,ก and happy is he who by listening to the experience of others avoids the rocks and shoals on which so many have been wrecked.

กIn England, the business makes the man.ก If a man in that country is a mechanic or workingman, he is not recognized as a gentleman. On the occasion of my first appearance before Queen Victoria, the Duke of Wellington asked me what sphere in life General Tom Thumbกs parents were in.

กHis father is a carpenter,ก I replied.

กOh! I had heard he was a gentleman,ก was the response of His Grace.

In this Republican country, the man makes the business. No matter whether he is a blacksmith, a shoemaker, a farmer, banker or lawyer, so long as his business is legitimate, he may be a gentleman. So any กlegitimateก business is a double blessingit helps the man engaged in it, and also helps others. The farmer supports his own family, but he also benefits the merchant or mechanic who needs the products of his farm. The tailor not only makes a living by his trade, but he also benefits the farmer, the clergyman and others who cannot make their own clothing. But all these classes of men may be gentlemen.

The great ambition should be to excel all others engaged in the same occupation.

The collegestudent who was about graduating, said to an old lawyer:

กI have not yet decided which profession I will follow. Is your profession full?ก

‘the basement is much crowded, but there is plenty of room upstairs,ก was the witty and truthful reply.

No profession, trade, or calling, is overcrowded in the upper story. Wherever you find the most honest and intelligent merchant or banker, or the best lawyer, the best doctor, the best clergyman, the best shoemaker, carpenter, or anything else, that man is most sought for, and has always enough to do. As a nation Americans are too superficialthey are striving to get rich quickly, and do not generally do their business as substantially and thoroughly as they should, but whoever excels all others in his own line, if his habits are good and his integrity undoubted, cannot fail to secure abundant patronage, and the wealth that naturally follows. Let your motto then always be กExcelsior,ก for by living up to it there is no such word as fail.

The Secret to Success!

The Secret to Success!

by: Fernando Soave

I must tell you about a rich manกs son at Niagara Falls. He was an indescribable specimen of anthropologic potency. He had a skullcap on one side of his head, with a gold tassel in the top of it, and a goldheaded cane under his arm with more in it than in his head. It is a very difficult thing to describe that young man. He wore an eye glass that he could not see through, patent leather boots that he could not walk in, and pants that he could not sit down indressed like a grasshopper. This human cricket came up to the clerkกs desk just as I entered, adjusted his unseeing eyeglass, and spake in this wise to the clerk. You see, he thought it was “Hinglish, you know,กก to lisp. “Thir, will you have the kindness to supply me with thome papah and enwelophs!กก The hotel clerk measured that man quick, and he pulled the envelopes and paper out of a drawer, threw them across the counter toward the young man, and then turned away to his books. You should have seen that young man when those envelopes came across that counter. He swelled up like a gobbler turkey, adjusted his unseeing eye glass, and yelled: “Come right back here. Now thir, will you order a thervant to take that papah and enwelophs to yondah dethk.กก Oh, the poor, miserable, contemptible American monkey! He could not carry paper and envelopes twenty feet. I suppose he could not get his arms down to do it. I have no pity for such travesties upon human nature. If you have not capital I am glad of it. What you need is common sense, not copper cents.

The best thing I can do is to illustrate by actual facts wellknown to you all. A. T. Stewart, a poor boy in New York, had $1.50 to begin life on. He lost 87 cents of that on the very first venture. How fortunate that young man who loses the first time he gambles. That boy said, “I will never gamble again in business,กก and he never did. How came he to lose 87 cents? You probably all know the story how he lost itbecause he bought some needles, threads, and buttons to sell which people did not want, and had them left on his hands, a dead loss. Said the boy, “I will not lose any more money in that way.กก Then he went around first to the doors and asked the people what they did want. Then when he had found out what they wanted he invested his 62 cents to supply a known demand. Study it wherever you choosein business, in your profession, in your housekeeping, whatever your life, that one thing is the secret of success. You must first know the demand. You must first know what people need, and then invest yourself where you are most needed. A. T. Stewart went on that principle until he was worth what amounted afterward to forty millions of dollars, owning the very store in which Mr. Wanamaker carries on his great work in New York. His fortune was made by his losing something, which taught him the great lesson that he must only invest himself or his money in something that people need. When will you salesmen learn it? When will you manufacturers learn that you must know the changing needs of humanity if you would succeed in life? Apply yourselves, as manufacturers or merchants or workmen to supply that human need. It is a great principle as broad as humanity.

We Do Eat Our Young: The Story of a Successful Hom

We Do Eat Our Young: The Story of a Successful Home Business

by: Joe Saddoris

Whether it is in the world animals, recovering drug addicts, or business if the truth were told we do eat our young. As when I was young I would watch Wild Kingdom every Sunday night, sure enough there it was a big strong fast Cat would be chasing down and eating some young antelope.

As a social worker I work with clients with addiction problems and have noticed they display a similar trait as the cats. Once a person gets in recovery for just a short while they tend to be the least tolerant of the new people struggling to get into recovery. In the market of Home Business I have noticed a similar occurrence with the people that have struggled and found they way to having a profitable Home Business.

When I was hunting for a legitimate home business to start up, (which is no small task) I found what appeared to be a real business. The definition of a real business is a business that does not make any claim to be fool proof takes real effort, takes at least six months to start making any profit, and one that requires an investment of my own money.

Now when you read that definition you may feel confused, however if you stop and think about what has made anything you have ever done successful and real it would include all of the above criteria. Now back to eating our young, just how does this pertain to people in the home business? When I was starting out I knew very little about the home business and nothing at all about how to be a successful marketer in the Internet business on a meager budget.

I thought if I want to know how to do these things then I need to ask the people that are already doing it and having some success. Seemed reasonable, however what I found was that most if not all of the people running a successful internet business from home where not only not open but more than glad to sell me all kinds of programs that were to be the root of all my success.

Sadly what I found was that these people were making money off of me and not wanting to help me what so ever. I felt very frustrated with not being able to find anyone that was willing to share with me or help me repeat what they had been able to do in their home business. Yes they were eating their young.

I finally happened across a group of people that thought like I did. This group believed to be successful them selves they had to pass along all they had been taught by others. This was it, I began to get real marketing ideas that cost very little and took a lot of work. I do not mind the work and the great thing is that with the help of successful work at home business owners I soon become successful in my home business.

Of course the only way I can continue my success is to pass on what I have been taught and as long as I do that I will be successful. My success is your success and when you learn the method you pass it on to others. It all seems so simple and the idea is simple the work is hard and it is not free so if you are looking for this type of success, a real home business drop in and let me tell you how I did it.

A Secret To Extraordinary Accomplishments

A Secret To Extraordinary Accomplishments

by: Willie Crawford

I sat watching a documentary on U.S. Navy SEAL Team Training on the local exercise channel. It showed young men, mostly in their early 20กs, enduring grueling ocean swims in nearfreezing water. It showed these same young men forced to swim underwater (holding their breaths) until a major percentage of them passed out and had to be rescued by their instructors. It showed weeks of grueling training in which ordinary men are transformed into incredible machines with wills of steel and unshakable discipline.

Sitting… transfixed, and marveling at what these young men were able to accomplish, I saw the one missing element that most online business people are missing. I saw an ingredient that if more of them harnessed it, they would be able to accomplish things กin their worldก as magnificent. That one secret ingredient is teamwork. It was the group cohesiveness, and the fact that they were all working for a common purpose that allowed the SEAL Team trainees to accomplish what they would not normally be able to do.

Enter the realm of the online entrepreneur. He sits at his computer, researching, writing and testing ads, tweaking his webpages in an effort to achieve greater search engine ranking, and doing a dozen other chores. Many of these online entrepreneurs do this all alone. They attempt the monumental… to build a six or even seven figure income while operating in a vacuum.

Step back and observe the Internet marketer earning several hundred thousand to several million dollars per year. He doesn’t operate in a vacuum. I know! I lived among and studied these people, and in the process became one of them.

Let me emphasize what you may not be noticing on a conscious level:

Successful Internet marketers all have mentors. Actually many of them mentor each other. They don’t fear sharing things theyกve learned through trial and error with those who will share back with them. They all กcooperate and graduate.ก They don’t have the กscarcity mentality.ก They know that through cooperation the pie actually gets bigger so they each get a bigger piece.

Successful Internet marketers often have coaches, or managers. They do this for the same reason that successful athletes, politicians and celebrities all have coaches or managers. They know that others can often step back and observe whatกs happening in their lives more objectively, and then make sure that they’re only doing things that will move them towards an identified goal. These coaches will push them and challenge them to do more than they would probably do on their own.

Successful Internet marketers have formal and informal brainstorming or masterminding networks. Napoleon Hill, in ‘think And Grow Rich,ก pointed out that this was a common trait among the millionaires that he studied too. Put several people together who have a common interest or goal and itกs a natural breeding ground for breakthrough ideas. The masterminding can be long distance, via conference calls, but itกs usually more productive when itกs at an inperson gathering. These gathering can be as infrequent as twice a year, but they have proven very powerful!

When you think about why the above factors of extraordinary accomplishment are so powerful, it seems to boil down to one word. That word is… accountability. When youกve made a commitment to a group to work towards a common goal, thatกs much more effective than if you just made that commitment to yourself. Thereกs the incredible social pressure of not letting the group down. Thereกs knowing that the success… or failure… of someone else hinges upon your actions. Thatกs an amazing force that you can tap into today which will allow you to do things that you had previously not even imagined possible.

Now that you know the secret, if you’re serious about building an incredible online business you only need to harness it. A good place to find people who are ideal for teaming up with is at seminars and conferences. Thatกs why I attend so many. On breaks, at lunch, and after hours, I bounce ideas off of those with perhaps differing points of view, but with similar objectives.

While seminars and conferences offer lots of useful information and provide a motivational lift inandof themselves, my observation has been that the real กmoneyก is made afterhours. Thatกs where small groups of friends, who only became associates through these events, sit around and put together deals and flow out large projects. They do it around the pool or huddled in an individualกs room. They don’t just brainstorm, they make longterm business commitments. These are commitments that muster in them the same type of effort that I witnessed in the Navy SEAL trainees swimming in the freezing ocean water.

I encourage you to stop procrastinating and act upon this obvious but tooseldom acted upon gem today. If you need help locating events where you can look for ideal partners, visit my resource website:

http://InternetMarketingSeminarSchedule.com It lists a variety of events, and might even offer some very convenient to where you live. Break out of your shell of mediocrity and do it today!

As an aside, the next event that Iกll personally be at is Michael Penlandกs Internet Marketing and Joint Venture Super Conference, in Orlando, Florida, December 3rd 5th. There will be a lot of people there looking for proactive potential business partners. Thatกs the whole purpose of the conference. You can register for it today through a special link Iกve arranged for my clients and friends at:

Is There A Better Way To Make A Living?

by: Douglas Young

Itกs a shame that millions sacrifice, even destroy, their personal lives on their way up the corporate ladder, stepping on others to stay ahead of the cutthroat competition.
What if you could earn an income from the comfort of your own home, using a proven system?

that was affordable to start…
that gave you creative control…
that let you be your own boss…
that allowed you to work parttime or fulltime when, where, and the way you chose, with the people you chose to work with…
that educated and trained you, too…
that was based on a proven, duplicatable system that had already worked for tens of thousands of กaverageก people…
where you could finally earn what you were worth…
and where, with a little luck and lots of work, กhitting the jackpotก was truly possible?

This is an accurate description of everyday life for thousands of people just like you. They are doing it, and so can you.
Don?t delay, get started right away…

A Sad Truth That Makes You Rich

A Sad Truth That Makes You Rich

by: Eo Lim

Have you ever faced this situation before?

Imagine this.

Salesman A sells you an expensive vacuum cleaner.

He spends an hour telling you the benefits of his product.

He further boasts his product is the best. He shows the features clearly to you. super long extendable hose. power drive motor. extreme low energy consumption. etc.

This salesman virtually uses powerful words to trigger you psychologically to open your wallet. And, he offers full money refund, 3 years warranty and noquestionsasked conditions.

This seems to be the best offer that knocks your socks off.

But, you hesitate. You want to think about it.

Another salesman, Mr. B, comes few days later. He sells the same product to you.

Mr. B does almost the same thing as salesman A. But, this time he shows the weakness of the product. He emphasizes the weakness is not really important. The product is designed to compensate it.

Who will you buy from?

If I were you, I would buy from Mr. B.

On the surface, it looks like a pathetic move by him. But, it strikes our hearts. We’re looking for honesty.

See now?

The legendary adman James Webb Young did this before.

He sold fruits by mail. Let me tell you his story.

There was a violent hailstorm nearly ruined an applegrowing season. The ice pellets hit the apples bruising and scarring the skins.

Young feared massive complaints and returns if he shipped those apples to his mailorder customers. His business would be destroyed if he didn’t fulfil the order. The customers would ask for refund.

In fact, there were only cosmetic damages. The skins were discoloured. But, this didn’t affect the freshness of the fruit.

To solve the problem, Young included a preprinted card in every order.

He honestly told the customers that the apples were scarred. He further assured that this was the proof that apples were grown at mountain where extreme cold caused hailstorms. Due to the weather, the fleshes of apples were firm and sweeter.

According to Young, not a single order was returned. In fact, the customers even requested scarred apples the following year.

Isn’t it interesting human behaviour?

Yes. Honesty does sell!

How can you use this to your advantage?

Let me give you an example.

If you’re selling handmade violin on the Internet, how can you beat your competitors?

You must show your prospects that yours are not as perfect as those machinemade violins.

Honestly tell them this.

กOccasionally, there’re some scratches on the surface. The tune of each string is also not calibrated by computer. The worst is that every violin doesn’t come with perfectly equal size and sound.

But I assure you that this is the proof of violin make by experienced craftsmen and monitored by best violinists.

That makes each violin authentic and unique. It has the character that you can’t get from machinemade violins.ก

This is how you use this strategy.

Whether you honestly or deceitfully show your honesty, it doesn’t matter. The sad truth is that people can be persuaded to buy when you intentionally expose the weakness of your product.

Unfortunately, many marketers rarely do it. Most are educated to show only benefitsloaded sales messages to prospects. It is especially overdone in the Internet.

This is your chance now! Be different and be more empathic to customer influence.

Just pick one weakness of your product. Talk about it frankly in your marketing. Show how the weakness is not an important issue and is compensated by the strength.

This is how you make more sales. You appear to be weak yet you’re strong.
