Creative Suite The Underlying Integration

Creative Suite The Underlying Integration

by: Blur Loterina

Are you an Acrobat user and needs a complete tool for your print or web design projects? Read on.

A few months ago, Acrobat launched its main creative design packages including Photoshop/ImageReady, GoLive, InDesign and Illustrator. After a long period of silence, it came up with a much better package.

Adobe’s Creative Suite now comes in two new packages, the Standard Edition and the Professional Edition. The Standard Edition is composed of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. This package contains most of the printoriented flagships. On the other hand, Adobe GoLive and Acrobat Professional comprise the Professional Edition, which focuses on web design.

Basically, these packages are combinations of the strengths each application offers. They are integrations of tools for handling colour management, screen display, type handling and more. They allow crossapplication, meaning any file done in one program can be opened to the other programs as long as the file was created on one of the programs that comprises the packages. When a file is transferred, all other options can be applied. For example, when you open an Illustrator file to Photoshop, that file will be opened as a Photoshop file.

Every creative application on the package uses PDF file format. Not just a PDF format, they use the latest PDF 1.5 format. PDF format allows you to import and export directly. You can embed vector PDFs from Illustrator and bitmap PDFs from Photoshop in a multipage InDesign PDF. This can also be exported for PDF web display or repurposed via GoLive.

Adobe Creative Suites has a new integrated file management system, which is essential in the software’s workflow and tight integration. Different components and versions of a project are hard to manage, especially when you are going to use a lot of programs, as in workgroups. But Adobe has a solution to this, the Version Cue. Version Cue, through the application of Save dialog, enables you to store all job elements and important version of your project. The Open dialog accesses visual thumbnails of the project file. You will also be warned if other users are using the same file. In other words, it provides file versioning and management.

The packages also contain XMP or eXtensible Metadata Platform standards. This allows you to search for files according to related information like keywords or authors.

Creative Suite applications are guaranteed excellent tools to provide you with your desired result. Think of these packages as the total of all these applications.

The Wrong Email Format Can Destroy Your Offer

The Wrong Email Format Can Destroy Your Offer

by: Rich Hamilton, Jr

Which email format is more effective to use, Text or HTML?

A good question, many experts have been debating over for awhile now, is which email format is more effective. It all depends on who you ask, many people prefer the text format over the HTML format. There are also many people who would rather use HTML over the text format. You can pretty much draw a line right down the middle between the text users and the HTML users, itกs that close.

The truth of the matter is that the most effective format to use for your email really depends on the offer you’re presenting.

Both text and HTML email formats have their advantages and disadvantages. In this article I am going to go over the advantages and disadvantages of text and HTML email formats. Letกs jump right in and start with the format text.

Text

Obviously the real advantage to using a text format is that you have a white background with black font making it very easy to read. The text format loads fast, no matter what size the email is.

If the email loads fast and is easy to read how can text formats have a disadvantage?

Easy!

The real disadvantage of using text format is when you are using email as a source of marketing. To effectively use email marketing you need to use some sort of tracking software. Without tracking you will never know if the subject line and/or email offer needs work.

The point I am trying to make is that people are very cautious about clicking on tracking and affiliate links. As soon as they see a lengthy url, they get the impression that you are trying to sell them something and immediately delete the email. With a text formatted email you cannot hide long tracking urls from the recipient. With an HTML format you won’t run into this problem, which brings us to…

HTML

The biggest advantage of using HTML is that you can hide your tracking urls from the viewer. Instead of having a long url in your email offer, you can use a simple กclick hereก. Not only can you hide your tracking url, but you can also mask it from appearing in the browser window.

Moreover, HTML has a lot of disadvantages. For instance, some people can’t view HTML email, while others can view it with a limited amount of space. HTML email files can be sizable and take up a lot of space. Most people who use HTML formatted email use a lot of images and other graphics to make their email have a professional appearence. But they don’t stop and think about the size of the email that they are sending, and whether or not their recipients may have limited space.

Sending large email files is a sure way to get your recipients upset. You don’t want to strike out before you have the chance to swing!

You can see that both email formats have their advantages, as well as their disadvantages. As for which format is the right one for you, it all depends on your offer.

If you are sending an email offer that doesn’t require any lengthy tracking urls or has no affiliate urls, then text should be your format of choice.

Moreover, if you do have tracking or affiliate urls in your email offer, then HTML is the way to go. When using an HTML format be conservative, not everyone has broadband, youกll find that a lot of people are still using 28.8k modems for their Internet connection.

When sending out an HTML email offer it should have a solid white background with black text, and absolutely no images or graphics. This way the email offer appears to be text and loads fast, when itกs actually HTML. Your viewer won’t be able to see your long tracking or affiliate url which will increase your click through ratio and that means more sales.

Most autoresponders and email softwares have the ability to send email in both formats, but not all of them. There are still some that don’t.

Plain Jane Email Equals Flat Results

Plain Jane Email Equals Flat Results

by: Karen Fegarty

Years ago, when email was just emerging as the incredible marketing tool it is today, everything was done in plain text. Since not everyone uses the same email program, and not all of them are compatible with the others, messages often ended up looking like nothing but jumbled pieces of nonsense. Besides that, they were boring.

Thus, Internet marketers were forced to find a way to spiff up their email messages to make them grab attention. Luckily, HTML was there to provide a solution.

Studies show that marketing emails sent in HTML format get much better response rates and far fewer unsubscribes than those sent in plain text. The reasons for this are many, but perhaps the biggest reason can be summed up this way: HTML messages look cooler!

The great thing about HTML is that all your recipients will be able to see it. The problem is that you can’t always predict just how it will look. Users with older or outdated email programs will likely see the message as text, and some will even see all that ugly HTML coding. Those using newer versions of Outlook or Outlook Express, Eudora, or Netscape Communicator will likely see the HTML as it was intended… at least partially.

The only way to ensure that your HTML messages are seen the way you designed them is to format the text/plain and HTML materials separately from one another, and have the appropriate version of the message displayed for the recipient. This way, those who have HTML enabled email programs (which most people do these days) can see your message exactly how you planned. Similarly, even those whose email programs do not allow for HTML will be able to read your message loud and clear.

As you know, email is one of the most effective marketing tools available today, but just like anything else, it must be done correctly. A jumbled, unreadable message will only turn wouldbe customers away, which not only hurts your bottom line, but can damage your credibility. In this day and age, you must ensure that your marketing message is accessible to everyone.

You may be surprised to find out that of all the bulk email management programs available, very few allow you to format text and HTML separately, thus making your message universal. One program in particular, called Broadc@st, not only offers this cuttingedge capability, but also provides several list management and marketing tools. For more information on Broadc@st HTML, and how you can download a free, fullyfunctional 10day trial, see http://www.mailworkz.com

Expert Guide to SOnyกs HDV camcorder

Expert Guide to SOnyกs HDV camcorder

by: Kenny Hemphill

The Sony HD camcorder, the Handycam HDRFX1 is being marketed by the company as ‘worldกs first HDV 1080i consumer camcorder’. But at $3,700, it’s price tag is stretching the consumer label somewhat.

However, there’s no doubt the the industry sees HD video as a consumer format and prices will come down over the next couple of years. This Sony HD camcorder is just the start of what is sure to be an avalanche of HD camcorders from electronics companies over the next few months.

So, does this mean we can all look forward to shooting Hollywoodquality home movies in the future? Not quite. Although its true that some Hollywood fetaures, such as George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’ are being shot in high definition video, its not the same high definition as is shot and recorded by these camcorders.

If you look again at that Sony quote, you’ll see the important label, 1080i. If you’re familiar with HDTV, you’ll know that 1080 refers to 1080 lines of vertical resolution and the ‘i’ means the video is interlaced. 1080i is one of the two most common HDTV formats, the other being 720p (720 lines, progressive scan).

Hollywood HD movies are shot on another format, 1080p. This is higher quality than the other two, as it mixes the higher resolution with the betterquality progressive scan picture.

There is another important difference too. Hollywood HD is uncompressed, whereas the video shot by cameras like this Sony HD camcorder is compressed as MPEG2. This compression inevitably lowers the quality of the video stored on the camera’s DV tape. However, it’s necessary because the HDRFX1 connects to a computer using a FireWire cable and FireWire, whether it is the 400 or 800 variety, doesn’t have the bandwidth to transfer uncompressed HD footage. Even if it did, the sheer size of the files would make it impractical because of the large amoount of hard disk space needed to store it and the processing power needed to edit it.

Another fly in th HD ointment is that, currently, very few applications are able to edit the footage from this Sony HD camcorder. However, that looks set to change,as Apple has already announced that the next version of its Final Cut Express and iMovie applications, due at the end of January, will be able to edit HD.

HD video will eventually become a common consumer format, when prices come down and editing software is able to work with it. However, until a compression format is found that can squeeze the data contained in HD without noticeably reducing the quality, there will be little benefit over current DV format camcorders.

The Smallest Is The Best!.. As Long As It Serves I

The Smallest Is The Best!.. As Long As It Serves Its Purpose.

by: Decebal Scraba

It is true! In graphics optimization, seen as a part of website optimization, the smallest is the best. Of course, the element in question should still serve its purpose of being the expression of an idea. Furthermore, it should be understandable, clear, suggestive and goodlooking. Letกs see together which could be the right choices (in terms of web graphics optimization) when we decide what type of graphics we’ll use on a website.

What kinds of web graphics are present on the Internet?

When it comes to their origin, there are two types of graphic digital files: vector graphics (created with software tools like Corel DrawTM , FreehandTM etc.) and raster graphics (photographs, 3D renders and any other type of bitmap files). Most of the web sites on the World Wide Web hold as graphic elements bitmaptype graphics in three different formats: GIF (standing for Graphics Interchange Format), JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and PNG (Portable Network Graphics). All these 3 types use different compression algoritms to considerably reduce the size of the graphic file. Because PNG is not so popular, I hope that you will forgive me if I stick to GIF and JEG in my article. Probably you already know a lot about these (or you can browse the web and find plenty of information) so I’ll get directly to the choices we must make when it comes to design our web site.

How many colors should we use for our web graphics?

What type of bitmap files will hold our web graphics?

Some specialists say that we should always go with JPEG, because it supports 16 milion colors and produces quite small files. Well, this is not entirely true, I think. I can only tell you for sure that we don’t have to go with the same type all over our website. How’s that? Let’s see!

When should we go with GIF?

for graphics with fewer colors: web logos, cartoonlike drawings and lineart (pure black and white) drawings; whenever it is OK to use for our graphics the 256 colors pallette (or even the 216 “safe” colors pallette)

for grayscale pictures with less halftones (with big contrast)

for graphics with smaller screen size (even if with many colors) which rely on details; GIF format compression is lossless and keeps sharp contours and clear definition between areas filled with different colors;

when we need the “Transparency” option of GIF Format, e.g. when a graphic should have a nonrectangular shape and/or we want to discard its background

whenever an image saved in GIF format is smaller than one saved as JPEG, both images being at a comparable level of quality when displayed

generally, for vectorgenerated graphics (unless they have blending and/or gradient fills)

When to use JPEG format?

for color images with 16 milion colors and many halftones (photographs, 3D render output files, any other images with continuoustones)

for grayscale images which rely on subtle halftones

for graphics/images with big screen size where colors and shades are more important than contours, outlines and boundaries

whenever an image saved in JPEG format is smaller than one saved as GIF, both images being at a comparable level of quality when displayed

generally, for photographs and similar images

Which are the inconveniences of each format?

From my point of view, these are the main limitations for GIF and for JPEG formats:

For GIF: limited number of colors (it can show 16 milion colors, but only in dithered mode, which I do not recommend)

For JPEG: compression is done by reducing quality of the graphics (loss of sharpness, “hair filaments”, “pixelate” areas etc.)

Whatever format you choose, when it comes to graphics optimization as a part of website optimization, the SMALLEST is the BEST! Beside the format choice, keep in mind some tips when you create and optimize your web graphics:

Minimize the screen size of your graphics to the point where it is still clear and suggestive.

Try and try again saving a graphic in one of the two formats, at different quality levels (for JPEG) and different number of colors (for GIF). Do this until you find the best size / quality ratio that fits your needs.

Use vector graphics software and limit the number of colors when you create the nonphotographic graphics for your website.

Put emphasis on shape, contour, silhouette and contrast when creating / processing your graphics.

Choose carefully the resizing method in your image processor when you change the size / resolution of your graphics “antialias” is not always the best choice.

I hope that this article will help you in your work and always keep in mind that, when it comes to graphics optimization and website optimization, the smallest is the best as long as it serves its purpose.

Toshiba Wins Hollywood Support for the HD DVD form

Toshiba Wins Hollywood Support for the HD DVD format

by: Iulia Pascanu

What led them to this choice, as all four studios stated separately, is better performance for the price and copyright protection.

The other standard in competition, the Bluray disc, unconditionally backed by Sony Pictures Entertainment, is also counting on support from Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Twentieth Century Fox. The latter has recently joined the BluRay Disc Association Board.

The Bluray disc has more world leading electronics companies that support it: Sony, LG Electronics, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sharp, TDK, Philips, Pioneer, Hitachi. Also, computer giants Dell and Hewlett Packard.

The HD DVD standard is developed by Toshiba, Sanyo and NEC, under the endorsement of the DVD Forum.

Both HD DVD and Bluray standards use the same wavelength bluelasers that permit data storage on the disc at a higher density. This enhances the disc capacity and allows the recording of high definition video on DVD support.

Wining the support of the big Hollywood movie studios is most important in the DVD format battle. Up to this moment, the four studios that gave their endorsement to HD DVD technology represent 45% of the DVD prerecorded movie market.

The launch of DVD players in the HD DVD format is expected for the last quarter of 2005.

A Newsletter Is Worth A Thousand Words – Part 1

A Newsletter Is Worth A Thousand Words – Part 1

by: Janice Byer, CCVA, MVA

There are many, many ways of marketing your business that don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. They are all great ways of ensuring that your contacts are aware of what you do and whom you can help. One of the best forms of keeping your name in front of the eyes of your clients, your associates, and others that may be in your target market is a newsletter. It allows you to show them that you are more than just someone who is looking for projects to work on. It shows that you are also willing to pass on information that will help them run their own businesses.

Think about how many newsletters you read each week or month? For instance, the newsletter you are reading right now. Do you enjoy getting and reading it? Do you find the articles and other information helpful? Do you know who or what company produces it? Of course you do 🙂

Newsletter Formats:

Newsletters can be produced in several formats. For businesses, the most economical and most readily acceptable formats are plain text emails, HTML emails, HTML page on your website, PDF, and print. Each format has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Format Pros Cons

Plain text email · Easy to format· Size remains manageable and easy for readers to open· Costs only your time · Limited to text only· Cannot include graphics or fancy formatting

HTML emails · Visually appealing· Costs only your time· Allows for creativeness · Restricted in size as it takes a while to load· Can only be fully viewed while reader is online· Some readers may opt to receive only plain text emails so won’t see your creativeness

HTML webpage · Endless possibilities for design · Room for lots of content & graphics· Can be as big as you like· Don’t need to send as email attachment· Costs only your time · Takes time to design· Reader has to be online to view

PDF · Endless possibilities for design· Room for lots of content & graphics· Can be as big as you like· Can send only a text email with a link to the page· Readers can save to their computer and read or print at their leisure· Almost everyone has the free Adobe Reader in order to view· Costs only your time · The larger the format, the longer to produce· Need to have the full version of Adobe to produce or a PDF printer driver

Print · Endless possibilities for design· Room for lots of content & graphics· Can be as big as you like · Costly to print and mail.

Deciding which format to produce your newsletter, and the frequency which you publish it, may be a process of trial and error. For instance our newsletter, Virtual TidBits (www.docutype.net/news.htm), started as a monthly text only email. This was done by formatting it in either Word or Notepad. The only essential formatting that needs to be included in text emails is that it is kept to 65 characters per line. This didn’t take very long to put together, only about 2 hours a month.

For creative types, plain text just didn’t seem to be appealing enough. So, we tried designing it in HTML. Well, they turned out very visually appealing but seemed to take a long time to produce. You see, we would design the newsletter in Word and then transfer it to HTML using FrontPage, a longer process than we had hoped. It took about 45 hours to produce each month. Eventually, we changed our publishing schedule to bimonthly, which seemed to justify the time it took to produce.

But, it still didn’t seem to be exactly what our readers or we fully enjoyed reading. So we made yet another change. Our current format for Virtual TidBits is PDF and feedback has shown that everyone loves the new format and the freedom to add in as much as possible. It does take quite a bit of time to produce but, when you enjoy being creative, it doesn’t seem all that bad. We use MS Publisher to design the newsletter and then convert that to PDF. If you have the full version of Adobe, you can choose to distill it or print to file. Distilling it leaves the hyperlinks in place while printing it to file will require that you go into the newsletter in Adobe and reinsert the hyperlinks.

If you do not have the full version of Adobe to accomplish this, you can choose to use one of the many PDF printer drivers that are on the market today. Some of those can be found at http://www.visagesoft.com/easypdf/, http://www.pdfzone.com/, & http://www.win2pdf.com (I used this one before getting the full Adobe and was very happy with the results). The only drawback of some of these printer drivers is that some of them (if not all) do not allow for hyperlinks to be active.

In Part 2 of our article on newsletters, we will look at what to include as content, where to find the content, and how to promote your newsletter. See you then.

Walt Disney Announced to Support the BluRay Disc

Walt Disney Announced to Support the BluRay Disc Format

by: Iulia Pascanu

The beginning of this December, the major film company Walt Disney announced its intention to start releasing movies and other content on Bluray discs in North America, as soon as the newformat players become available there.

Walt Disney has a market share of 17.2 of Hollywoodกs prepackaged DVD sales.

Sony, one of the most active developers of the Bluray format, owns Columbia Pictures. MetroGoldwynMayer gives its tacit support to Bluray disc, as only recently it has been purchased by a group led by Sony.

With these going on, Bluray currently bets on 47% of the Hollywoodกs prerecorded DVD market. Thatกs slightly more than what the other competing format, HD DVD can count on, up to this moment: 45% coming with the support from Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros Studios.

Walt Disney was the last big player to make a decision and its announcement the beginning of this month, definitely split the newformat DVD market in two.

However, Sony still has to hold its breath. Disney said it will join Bluray Disc Association, and become part of the board of directors. But the Disney officials too, as the ones from the other film studios, agreed to nonexclusive deals.

This means they are free to work with other DVD format developers too, if they prove more competitive.

Bob Chapek, president of Disney™ Buena Vista Home Entertainment, also stated that they prefer avoiding a format battle that would only puzzle the consumer. Ultimately, he said our hope is the format developers themselves can find a way to unify so the next generation product is not complicated by multiple format launches
