Varnish Your Printing and create New Dimensions

Offset Printing Varnishing techniques

Think for a moment. Is there a particular brochure or printed piece that stands out in your memory? Can you recall what feature or features have kept it with you!

Could it be graphic design? Photo placement? Typography or layout? Unusual format or innovative printing affects?

Learn the many techniques for incorporating varnish into your next printed piece. Varnished continues to be a great way of protecting and enhancing printed matter, but many graphic designers miss this in the element of design.

So you have that special promotion you are working on. It really needs to ‘stand out from the crowd’! One of the easiest and effective ways is to do it with varnish! You don’t get a second chance to make of first impression.

What is varnish?

Varnish is a variation of printing ink. It can be clear or tinted, glossy or dull, and it performs on a printing press as normal ink.

>From the production viewpoint, varnish is a sealer that overprints ink and paper helping to protect the finished printed piece from being scratched and scuffed. From a design viewpoint, dull varnish is sometimes used to reduce glare on glossy paper and thus increases readability.

For design effects, gloss and dull varnishes are used independently or in combinations. They can make a sheet glisten or make it appear smooth and shiny. Try spot varnish to add an enhanced appearance to photography, increase vibrancy of colors, or add interest and clarity to charts and diagrams.

Independent varnishes can run ขin the backgroundข and will attract the reader, in a very subtle manner to their presence.

Varnish does not always need to be combined with conventional printing inks. Varnish is interesting and appealing when used on its own. To create a tinted appearance you can add a small percentage of ink to varnish. This will print with a tinted transparent look that cannot be easily duplicated adding a dimension that is simply not achievable and any other way.

What are your options?

Ink, paper type and type of varnish (Matte or gloss, tinted or nontinted) must all be considered when deciding on the varnish effect you are trying to achieve. Sales, design and production staff should discuss these projects in the estimating/ production planning stage to ensure desired results are printed.

For most printed matter where varnish is being applied coated (glossy) paper is your best choice. Uncoated papers tend to absorb more of the effect and have a rougher surface.

Whether you use gloss varnish, dull varnish, tinted varnish or play one off against the other your viewers will enjoy the uniqueness of the design and print. Your printed piece will be remembered by a higher percentage of you audience and in some cases kept just as a collectors item.

I have been in the printing industry for many years. In 1986 I read many of the varnishing techniques that I employ in catalogue sent by one of our paper suppliers, entitled ‘Varnish Techniques’ by SD Warren Company. I have kept this catalogue and used it as a tool to help illustrate the finished results of various varnishing techniques. Yes, this catalogue is varnished. It is 2005 now, and I have decided to scan the actual pages that demonstrate and explain varnishing techniques used by commercial printers today.

Graphic Design Tip White Space as a Positive Elem

Graphic Design Tip White Space as a Positive Element

by: Robert Kennedy

Graphic designers of catalogues, booklets and annual reports should consider the paper pages as a positive element of the available graphic design area. The blank white paper spread is like the untouched canvas of a painter. The potential for design impact is encompassed by the physical confinements of the size of the paper pages.

Have you ever painted on canvas before? Regardless of whether you are working in oils, watercolors or acrylics, the entire space is roughly blocked in first. Composition is the first area to focus on.

The same concept should be applied to a book publication spread layout. Working the facing pages as a single visual unit, the diverse graphic elements need to be planned for their combination. The arrangement of photographs, descriptive selling copy and headlines takes the form of planned composition. This stage of format development should be done keeping the consumer in mind. Design elements should reflect what looks good to the consumer’s eyes and not mind.

The white space of the paper can provide the cleanest, most dramatic frame for the fourcolor photography, graphics or images. Your readers will appreciate this because it is easy on the eyes. In a recent group study, the input we received suggests a liking of white space in their responses. When important graphics like product photos, logos or ads are allowed to breathe with some respite of space around them, our group appreciated this.

It doesn’t matter if you choose white or a solid background color as your ‘empty’ design element. The effect will be perceived as the same. The use of this space is a vital ingredient in the development and execution of a persuasive booklet publication format.

It is the challenge of the graphic designer to create white space as opposed to cluttering it. In general, the more freely the design elements appear on a page spread, the more dramatic the depictions can be. The empty space you create can be the most effective and the simplest in uniting all elements of your graphic design.

Think Inkjet Unleash Your Imagination

Think Inkjet Unleash Your Imagination

by: Niall Roche

Add unlimited dimension to creative crafts with your computer, inkjet printer and specialized media. Inkjet printing opens the door to thousands of colors. Why print them all on white paper? If you can think it… you can inkjet!

Unleash your imagination. Specialty papers are just the beginning of endless media alternatives to standard printer paper. Highresolution photo papers in glossy and matte finishes transform family photos into enduring memories. Parchment and confetti papers add elegance and personalization to text printing, making treasured gifts and display items out of your favorite writings and adding warmth and cordiality to your invitations and greeting cards. As wonderful as these papers are, they are only the beginning of what you can do with a little imagination and your inkjet printer.

Metallic inkjet media is available in gold, chrome, and silver. Although metallic inkjet media accepts print in either color or black and white, generally black and white prints will present better on gold. If you print yellow on silver metallic media, it will look like a gold inlay. Orange printed on silver looks like bronze.

This transformation takes place between the ink and the media so you don’t have to apply difficult text and photo manipulations to achieve elegant results. Add dazzling effects to photos and text with holographic film. The base color of holographic media is silver. Holographic film reflects the full color spectrum and presents your print project in a rainbow of colors, changing along with the angle of view.

Super Color Shrink is a pliable plastic that accepts inkjet print. After printing, you bake the plastic and it shrinks and hardens, reducing the size of your image and adding texture to your project. Super Color Shrink is available both transparent and white art sheets.

Even if you can’t paint like Monet or Van Gogh, you can still create a masterpiece on canvas with Super Color Art Canvas. Designed for use with inkjet printers, Super Color Art Canvas is actually a specially coated nylon surface that renders your images and photos so beautifully that you probably won’t even want to frame them!Cling Window media makes window posters and removable art that adhere to most glass, plastic and baked enamel surfaces.

As you probably know, it is impossible to print the color white, but you can make white embossed prints with inkjet embossing paper and white embossing powder. Inkjet embossing paper keeps inks from drying. Sprinkle your prints with embossing powder and then heat the image with an embossing tool or heat gun and watch as your design becomes an embossed raised image. Find both white and clear embossing powders at any good craft retail store. Preserve embossed images with a clear acrylic spray.

Apply your designs to unpainted wood, marble, slate, and leather with inkjet rubon decal paper or use water slide decal media to decorate glass, metal, ceramics, candles…

Combine imagination and specialized inkjet media to extend your creativity to the limit. The possibilities are endless when you think inkjet!

Toner Cartridges How They Work

Toner Cartridges How They Work

by: Martin Smith

In the past computers and their accompanying printers were huge. Toner reservoirs and toner cartridges were used instead of ink cartridges like the ones in use today. Toner cartridges were difficult and messy to fill. The toner cartridges were an advancement. Some printers ran on print wheels and some used ribbons.

Computers are compact and printers now do more than just print on some cases. Cartridges with selfcontained reservoirs are used in printers. Refilling some cartridges is possible and it isn’t as messy as adding toner was. Two types of printers cartridges now exist. HewlettPackard and Epson printers primarily, used the first type the Peizo Electric.

An electric current is applied to a small crystal causing it to expand about every five microseconds (20,000 per second). The ink, because of the expansion, squirts through the print heads rapidly and precisely. Piezo Electric can do more precise action and tend to last longer because it has fewer print heads than do bubble jet/ thermal printers.

Bubble jet printer cartridges heat the ink into a bubble and is squirted through the ink nozzles thousands of times a second. The printer that is quieter than Piezo based printers is the bubble jet. It prints with exceptionally high resolution color printing. Ink is squirted through the nozzles as they move over media in the inkjet method not the mega pixel method.

Liquid ink, is squirted, in various colors on the paper to create an image. A motor assembly is used to enable the print heads to scan the page horizontally while the page is rolled vertically. A narrow band of an image is printed and the paper moves on ready for the next step. For speed it prints a strip across the page while it also prints vertical rows of pixels in each pass.

There are several types of inkjet technology. DODdrop on demand squirts small drops of ink on to the paper through tiny nozzles. It is akin to a hose being turned on and off 5,000 times per second. The amount of ink dropped on the paper and which nozzle fires and when is controlled by the driver software. The ink tends to smear right after printing in inkjet technology.

This is getting better as new ink compositions are developed. The Thermal Technology of printing allows the ink to shot onto the paper. This is a three stage process. The squirt begins in stage one when the ink gets heated to create a bubble. The initial pressure breaks the bubble and hits the paper. The vacuum that results pulls the ink from the reservoir to replace what was ejected.

In the past printers were highly priced because the print head that would imprint the image on paper was contained within the printer. Printers are fairly low in price, but the expense comes when you have to buy cartridges for it. It would almost be worth it to buy a new printer rather than the cartridges because the cost of cartridges is often more than the most basic inkjet printer.

Although cartridges are expensive they have some complex technology in them that would make them cheaper overall than it would be to keep replacing printer heads. Cartridges now have print heads contained within in themselves. If you use the correct cartridges in your printer, you could have the printer for a long time. Black cartridges work by squirting the ink through tiny nozzles onto the paper as they move back and for the page as do color cartridges.

Color cartridges have three reservoirs; one is filled with magenta, one with cyan, and one with yellow ink. A lot of things can have a bearing on the image quality. The quality of the paper you choose could determine the image you get. The two main influences on image quality are brightness and the absorption of ink. The vividness of an image describes its brightness while how effectively ink is put to the paper is absorption.

It is best to use paper specifically designed to be used with an ink jet printer. Using the proper type of paper will result in the best possible image. The settings of your display properties and/or printer settings can affect your printing project. The type of paper you use and the printer may suggest leaving your documents to dry for awhile. Check your printer for settings that may save ink by putting out less ink allowing documents to dry faster and provide you with a near perfect print image.

Knowing your printer and how it works is important.

Know The Color Basics

Know The Color Basics

by: Blur Loterina

Do your print ads or web pages seem so flat that no one ever bothers looking at it? How would you like to make them more unique and attractive?

The key to a striking visual ad is the color. It gives life to any image. Take for example the cartoons that we watch on television and how they attract kids. We may also wonder why fast food and restaurants use the same color for their business or why banana catsup is colored red and not yellow.

Every color has its own characteristics. They represent different mood, personality or impression. In other words, colors influence people.

In deciding what color to use, you must first know the nature of your business. You cannot use just one color, or else your ad will look so plain and boring. However, using different colors can mess up your image or it may create a different impression to the viewers. Balance is important.

There are three basic color models used in graphics design, CMYK, RGB and Pantone.

In making printed images, it is best to use the CMYK color model. CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It is referred to as the fourcolor process. This color model is commonly used in the printing process to produce fullcolor photographs and images. The advantage of using this model is that it reduces the cost of printing. When CMYK are combined, they produce the greatest number of printable colors. It is not advisable for use in singlecolor printing, though. Also, this model does not produce spot inks, such as metallic silver or gold.

Use the RGB (red, green and blue) color model in creating your web page images. All display devices, such as computer monitor or television, use this type of color mode. There are no cost limitations in the use of color for unprinted ad such as the web page. So you can use as much color as you want without fear of spending a lot of money on colors. In addition, current computer programs now offer a wide variety of colors.

Pantone colors are best suited for logos and corporate identity because it creates exact color match. This color model specifies consistency. If you want your printed company brochure to look exactly the same as how it appears on the computer, use pantone colors. The only drawback is that you will have to look for the right printer and paper. Glossy or coated paper tends to slightly alter the color. The difference between printed images on a glossy paper and a plain paper is very visible.

There’s a rule in color psychology that we must apply in designing print ads or web page. Use colors that will best describe the nature of your business. More importantly, your ad image must speak exactly what you want to tell the viewers.

The SKINNY on Newspaper Advertising

The SKINNY on Newspaper Advertising

by: BIG Mike McDaniel

Using the paper is considered gospel by many people in business. Use it wisely and it can be a good tool.

Remember, newspapers are passive, non intrusive media. They tend to reach only buyers who are looking for the product. They are poor at reaching prospects before the need arises.

Think about it, there are few times you have been driven to go to a store to buy a product you never heard of because you saw an ad in the paper. You had to have an earlier impression about the product for the newspaper ad to point you to the location to buy it.

There are 4 ways to use the newspaper for advertising.

1) Display advertising from one column wide by 2 inches high to a full two pages, display ads can be so numerous the news stories have to be cut so both can live on the page.

There is usually no protection. Competiting store ads can be next to each other (next time you see the paper look for tire store ads on the same page).

When designing your ad, remember itกs all about them. Use a catchy headline and tell them what you will do for the. Forget about your picture or your กNumber One in the District Awardก. Good advertising กfeels their painก.

2) Classified advertising The effectiveness of classified ads varies by paper and by who wrote the ad and by what the ad is selling. Many classified sections have turned into giant car dealer pages and huge homes for sale sections complete with four color pictures.

The small, private, กgotta sell my BowFlexก ads can be lost in a giant classified section. Many shoppers and Nickle Savers have smaller, and cheaper, classified sections.

Some small business operators find success with a series of small classified ads. Small blurps tend to build ‘top of mind awarenessก. A cheap way to keep your name out there.

3) Tabs and special sections Tabs, the cash cow for newspapers, are manufactured events designed to sell ads. Progress Editon. Easter Shopping Special. Dollar Days. You name it, there is a tab every idea.

Typically a tab is the regular paper page turned sideways (landscape) and folded in half.

Tabs get adon advertising dollars from existing clients and offer one time only exposure to those who don’t normally use the paper (i.e. the giant corporate ads in every Progress Edition). Most papers have so many tabs, they print an advertising calendar.

Understand them for what they are, vehicles to get extra bucks from you. If you want to be in one, rearrange your budget, don’t ad to it.

4) Inserts and stuffers Some Sunday papers weight 4 to 5 pounds each, mostly for the weight of stuffers and inserts. Usually reserved for national advertisers and big box stores. They print them and deliver them to the paper and pay a per piece fee to have them stuffed and delivered. For smaller businesses they become cost prohibitive. Better to stick with display ads.

Sunday papers have the biggest circulation, and ad rates are more expensive. Regional and national papers can be expensive, too. Local papers and shoppers are less expensive, but nonetheless can be a major part of a small business ad budget.

Newspaper advertising is sold by the column inch. Different categories of ads and section placement determine the rate and rates vary throughout the paper. Rates also vary with advertisers, depending on how many column inches they have agreed to buy in a one year period. The more the cheaper.

Plan your advertising well in advance and stick to your budget. Sell to needs, not ego and newspaper can be your buddy.

Throw Away The Fax Machine – A Guide To Online Fax

Throw Away The Fax Machine – A Guide To Online Fax

by: Kimble Young

Have you ever felt like throwing the fax machine out the window? Well you may not know it but you can, not literally please.

There have been services available for some time which allow you to take your fax needs online and save yourself the hassle of wrestling with the fax machine.

Any provider should be able to supply you with a basic faxtoemail service. You are usually assigned your own fax number and any faxes sent to this number are then attached as an image file to an email. That is then delivered to your email account. You will need to keep your fax machine for sending faxes but you can set it to not answer the phone and keep it on your main business line.

Most but not all fax services also provide a facility to send faxes by email, web or straight from the desktop. This feature can be utilised to send invoices or forms to customers without first needing print and then fax the document. Faxtoemail allows you to compose an email to [email protected] and attach each document you want to be faxed. You are then notified by email when your fax is complete.

Traditionally enabling your business to fax has meant ordering a separate phone line and number and purchasing a fax machine or fax software for each user. Which is an expensive proposition for a communications channel that is still essential but often rarely used these days. With online fax services these costs are all rolled in to a single monthly fee which is paid to your fax provider. Often this fee is just a fraction of the cost of phone line rental alone. Add the savings in paper and ink and using an online fax service starts to make a lot of sense.

If your customers fax through a lot of forms that you need to process and archive you’ll know how tedious it can be to flick through a whole binder just to find a specific fax. With an online fax service your fax correspondence can be filed along with all your electronic correspondence.

Points to consider when choosing a provider:

Do you receive your own dedicated number? Some virtual office providers for example will place you on a shared number and your faxes may be seen by anyone.

File formats: Make sure the provider can email you in a format that suits you. Most will send in a common format like PDF but others may use obscure formats that require special software to read.

Do they have a method of sending faxes that suits you? Some will offer you a choice of methods; ranging from basic emailtofax through to desktop clients which will allow you to ขprintข directly to a fax.

Is there an area code that will be local for your customers? Even if you are a regional business you may want to consider a metropolitan fax number if your customers are located there. Remember, you now have the choice.

There are some things to be aware of when switching over to online fax:

The first is that a fax machine makes a copy of a piece of paper and that online faxing makes a copy of an electronic document. You’ll no longer be able to rapidly scribble out a note and fax it anymore. However, you can just as rapidly send a quick memo by emailtofax or through a fax printer. Filling out a form that has been faxed to you is no longer simple but it can be done by opening the fax in an image editing program and typing with the text tool.

The second caveat is that you may be used to signing almost every fax you send, this is no longer possible as there is no paper stage. The author recommends that if you have access to a scanner you can scan your signature and save it as a black and white image ready to be inserted at the footer of every document you type up.

All in all if your staff don’t use the fax machine much, or use it for a lot of repetitive work, then faxing online can save you a lot of money in ink, paper, communications costs and most importantly productivity. If you can’t give up the routine of walking up to the fax machine with a piece of paper then you might still consider online faxing; but only to receive your faxes. Remember to turn off the auto answer feature of your fax machine.

The Canvas for the Perfect Printing Masterpiece

The Canvas for the Perfect Printing Masterpiece

by: Paul Hood

Making the right choice of media for printing is a must if you want to have a great output. Having a good working knowledge of the best materials to use for your printing needs will spell the success of your project. On the other side of the coin, lack of knowhow is likely to cause disaster. Fortunately for printing dummies, there are guides out there aimed at making the printing process and all the things in between a walk in the park. Amateurs and professionals may benefit for this as well.

A certain guide book released by a Montrealbased paper manufacturer Domtar called ขAnswer Packsข answered the call for a comprehensive reference that will enlighten people and give them a better understanding of the print process. The book has been well received as predictably it will. Many people are very eager to learn and providing them with the needed knowledge is a must.

Quoting Jack Rosenberger from his article:

‘the Answer Packs have been very well received in the marketplace because they’re simple and helpful,ก says Huguette Chainey, Domtarกs advertising and promotions manager. On Color, for example, demonstrates how to design with different color paper; provides examples of printing with halftones, duotones, and tritones on color paper; and explains how to design with color inks on color paper. Like On Texture, each of the instructional cards in On Color contains detailed information about each cardกs paper stock, inks, and printing techniques.

The presentation is very easy to understand and covers a wide range of topics that need to be understood in order to have a successful print job. Both resources are cleverly conceived, informative and entertaining, and timely. Cognizant of the current climate of budget pressure felt by designers and printers, Domtar focused on design techniques that are ideal for projects with a limited budget. Moreover, Domtar is publishing additional guides, with the aim of producing a reference series of handy Answer Packs.

Almost all aspect involved in the printing process have been covered including the financial and that in itself is a very good addition to the selection.

Which is Better: Digital or Offset Printing?

Which is Better: Digital or Offset Printing?

by: Brett Curry

As technology continues to improve, the quality of digital prints also improves. Technology advancements have also made it easier for more and more businesses to enter the printing industry. Good digital printers cost a few thousands dollars…good offset printing presses may cost a few million dollars.

For those companies interested in conveying the best possible image at all times, it is important to evaluate which printing process will bring the greatest result.

Let’s compare the two processes briefly:

Digital Printing: If you want a sample of digital printing, simply look at a piece that you print from your inkjet printer at your home or office. Digital printing uses a series of dots printed on top of the paper that form an image.

Offset Printing: Offset printing is done on large presses that use plates and ink. As your piece is printed on an offset press, the ink bleeds into the paper and bonds with it.

Because of the plates used, and the way the ink is absorbed by the paper, most people feel that offset printing provides deeper, richer, fuller color saturation than digital printing. While digital printing has certainly improved over the years, most printing experts would agree that it still hasn’t reached the quality level of offset printing.

How To Use Brainstorming To Solve Your Money Probl

How To Use Brainstorming To Solve Your Money Problems

by: Roy Primm

Advertising executive Alex F. Osborne first coined the word “brainstorming” in the early 1940’s. Since then literally millions of ideas, products and services have been created.

Every institution from Fortune 500 companies to Universities and Government agencies, have used the principle of brainstorming.

Fact: For every product in your home or office, chances are a person or group of people brainstormed about it.

They brainstormed on how best to create, market, sell, manufacture, advertise, or distribute it. This is how powerful brainstorming is.

One of the best things about brainstorming is that it can be used by anyone. You don’t have to be a C.E.O or army general. You can gain from brainstorming if you’re a housewife, janitor, student or unemployed.

Yes, you can use the principles of brainstorming for the largest project or the smallest project.

You can use it to plan a milliondollar ad campaign, or use it to plan what you’ll have for dinner tonight.

Practice the following steps. Youกll soon be amazed at the ideas and solutions your fabulous brain will give you.

7 Steps For Effective Brainstorming Sessions

1. The brainstorming session can be done with one person or one hundred people. The rules are the same. The only requirement is the participants should know about the problem, business, product or subject of the brainstorming session.

2. Don’t use critical thinking. Critical or judgmental thinking slows down or kills the creative process at this stage. Because as hard as you may try, you can only think one thought at a time. When your creating you can’t judge and when you judge you can’t create.

3. Keep the session light, loose and free spirited. Humor has been known to help oil the wheels of our creativity. A large portion of our creativity is released through our humor.

4. Make sure you have a pencil and paper to write down any and all ideas, or if you’re in a group, designate someone to write down the ideas.

5. It’s best to set a minimum length of time or amount of ideas you want to get out of each brainstorming session. Setting a goal helps everyone to focus; it also helps everyone avoid wandering minds.

6. Write down the problem, the goal, or the subject at the top of a piece of paper. For example, “Ways To Attract More Customers”. Next number each idea you or the group comes up with. Write down every idea, the good, the bad, and even the ugly. Remember, the goal is to get as many ideas listed on paper as possible.

7. Next evaluate the most doable ideas and take action.

That’s the 7 tips for effective brainstorming sessions. Follow them and watch the ideas flow.

Getting to Know Your Digital Color Printing

Getting to Know Your Digital Color Printing

by: Kristine Llabres

Digital simply means the implausible high resolution printing result of the files that you have from your computers. Since it is always better to use original things rather than the copied ones for the authenticity and originality is there. And that was digital printing will do to you. The number of copies would solely depend on you, your needs and desires.

Color attracts the customers and it utilizes the sophisticated as well as full color production using the latest innovations in printing technology. CMYK colors or Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are the best recommended color variety that should be used in digital color printing since it is clearer and the tiny details in the printing material are dealt with in a better manner and can produce the best output than those that were printed in RBY or Red, Blue and Yellow colors.

Since what you can see in the monitor is different from the actual print result of the printer. It may be darker on the screen but light or just fair in the printing output. But with today’s digital color printing customers are being satisfied with the outcome wherein there can be reduction, enlargement, and change portions of the original by coloring it again as well as the mix and match of texture pattern and others.

The paper where the printing will be should be in accordance with the desired effect of the printing. Matte paper has poor resolution with color black so it is not advisable to use this paper if large amount of color will be black for large prints but if it is of normal size matte paper will do just be partnered with compatible ink. Glossy paper is the widely used paper in digital printing for it matches almost all in the colors available in the printer.

Furthermore, in digital printing it will always be a verdict that lies in the hands of the printer that could be a commercial printing service or just an individual guided with the principles of digital printing. What is essential is that the printing result is of good quality and not of wasted ones.

Appropriate blending and harmony of colors should be observed to have the flourishing effect and compatibility among the materials. Colors that stir up emotions where the most valued colors of the customers for they could relate and intermingle with it. So much with it, digital color printing is what everyone needs. For high quality printing, personalized printing, customized printing and precise sharpness and clearness of images and photographs in a paper.

Printing Development For Best Outputs

Printing Development For Best Outputs

by: Marlon D. Ludovice

Printing, name used for several processes by which words, pictures, or designs are reproduced on paper, fabrics, metal, or other suitable materials. These processes, sometimes called the graphic arts, consist essentially of making numerous identical reproductions of an original by mechanical means, and the printed book has thus been called the first mass product.

The history of printing, which by its very nature is considered to be the most thoroughly documented of any history, practically identical with that of relief, or letterpress, printing (printing from a raised surface). Historically speaking, the bulk of all printing has been produced by this entirely mechanical method. Modern printing techniques, however, increasingly rely on photomechanical and chemical processes. In recent years computer technology has become important and adds up to the complexity of the printing procedures.

The various printing techniques were long been observed by ancient communities. In fact in the application of signet stones is possibly the earliest known form of printing. Used in ancient times in Babylonia and elsewhere, apparently both as substitutes for signatures and as religious symbols, the devices consisted of seals and stamps for making impressions in clay or of stones with designs cut or scratched on the surface. In the east, Chinese favorable invention made available the use of paper. However, in the west movable metal type was first cast with printing paper on the middle and use oilbased inks.

Today, the machine is used to transmit the inks from a printing plate to the printed page called a press. The first printing presses, such as those of the 16th century and earlier, were screwtype presses designed primarily to bring pressure on the printing form, which was placed face up in a flat bed. The paper, generally dampened, was pressed against the type by the movable surface, or platen. Then the next thing was the introduction of iron as the substitute for the screws. In 19th century improvements included the development of the steampowered press; the cylinder press, which uses a revolving cylinder to press the paper against a flat printing form; the rotary press, in which both the paper and a curved printing plate are carried on cylinders; and a practical perfecting press, which prints on both sides of a sheet of paper simultaneously.

The modern printing process is now largely controlled by computers. Printed images can be created from data gathered from images either scanned into a computer or obtained from a database. Once the images are in the correct format, image carriers are created which are then either printed from directly or fed into the printing machine’s memory. These provide information about color strength and positioning of images. They can also set the parameters for the type of material to be printed. Selfmonitoring computers known as closeloop systems can now measure and correct the performance of the printing press to preset parameters, to ensure that an image of the correct quality is obtained. Such filmfree systems able to project images on to the image carrier offer time and cost savings.

The modern printer is now a computer technician, not only requiring printing skills but also the ability to control the complex machinecomputer systems that can produce thousands of copies per hour. Training is no longer a craft apprenticeship but may involve computer simulation systems, which create and duplicate all the operations of a real printing machine using special dedicated software. This is now the modern way of printing, a fast and more efficient way of reproduction is being offered to us by different printing company. How lucky we are that we have this technologies that help us do the job smoothly.
